I think VW says that's within spec.

VW spec is 1 litre per 1000 km (621 miles)

Although a litre per 1000 is 'within tolerance', my 140K old ED30 uses 0.5 litre per 4000 miles, just as a comparison.  It's always been that way with German engines.  Some use loads, some use hardly anything.

Try 5/40 oil and I suspect it will burn less.

My mk6 is much the same, top it up every 1000 miles.

Mine does too.  At its worst it was a litre per 1000 miles.

I changed the pcv which didn't help.  In the summer I changed the valve cover.  When I removed the old one it was clear that the internal pcv passage joints had failed.

Since replacing the valve cover the oil usage is around a litre every 2000 miles.

Also have oil in the bottom intercooler rubber hose - been told this is common.

I've had my car for Nearly 5 years, and no longer worry about it, just ensure I check it regularly.

I should add for context that my average A road / Motorway cruising speed is 85/90mph and I'm in boost frequently.  Obviously the lower the engine speed, the lower the oil consumption.  BYD/CDL has different pistons and rings to a AXX though, so not sure how valid the comparison is.

As mentioned already, BMW M engines are notorious for high oil consumption with high revs/load, hence why they usually run on 10W/60!  So it's not just VW engines that like a drink of the slippery stuff.  And Honda VTECs also, whilst on the subject of other brands and oil!  I think BMW is probably the worst brand I've ever owned for oil consumption tbh.

As a side note, the one thing TFSI engines hate is short journeys.  They need frequent blasting to burn off the carbon build up and boil off any condensation from that sits in the engine on short journeys.

I use approx 1 litre over the course of a year covering 6000 to 8000 miles, driven aggressively most of the time :stupid:

That's pretty good!

Checked my oil this morning and needed about 100ml to get it up to max.  Bloody mayo all over the oil cap and in the rocker cover.  Damn those short journeys over winter!

Mine is a stock AXX engine and I top up around 6k on 5w30. The car just had a full service last week and I asked the garage to use 5w40. I hope it keeps burning slowly.

yep- had a vr6 that used same- had to put a litr in every 600 miles, used it for work at the time so a trip to London and back was a nightmare. Second vr6 a few years later used nothing at all.

vw said within tolerance, but how can a modern car need topping up that often, makes it unusable as an everyday car if you are doing a lot of miles, ok if messing about with a few miles over a weekend.

I find mine used as much as my right foot dictates. If I cruise everywhere or cruise on the motorway it uses (next to) nothing. If I kick its head in then it drinks the stuff

If its not smoking and its not leaking then its fine  :signLOL:
