I'll let you know front brakes are binding so they're sorting them out as well

Had mine done this week, 50k and 5.5 years since it was done.

The old belt looked fine, no cracking, didn't look bad at all. Car is not used much for short journeys as I endure* using public transport during the week. Cost was £350.

*Loud mouth girl the other day on her hands free, talking as loud as you like, 'They effing told me £10 on the electric would effing last all week but the effing thing ran out on Wed', I am going to ring them later and ask them what the eff they think they are playing at'.

Idler pulley/wheel and you may want to consider a thermostat. My 2007 GTI just began showing signs of coolant not reaching operating temps as it does and coding P2181.

I would recommend checking the seals inside the HPFP as mine were perished at 25k miles / 11 years.

TPS have a sale on genuine cam-belt kits at the mo, I got the belt kit, water pump and thermostat all genuine VW parts for £170 all in:-)

Worth a look if you can do it yourself!!

MaxAmp

Bargain! Can't argue with a £170 belt/pump change if folk fancy tackling it themselves.  Honestly, it's such an easy job I am bewildered by people paying VW £550 to do it!   You don't need a cam lock tool or anything daft like that.  VW made this engine easy to work on  :happy2:

That's the kicker.  Bolts and sundries tot up the final price by a fair chunk, which is often over looked.  Around £30 in stretch bolts + 2 bottles of G13 water additive @ £15 each.....on top of the belt/pump kit.  Still works out a lot cheaper DIY vs garage price though.

A lot of folk *still* re-use stretch bolts though, in spite of the well documented cases of engines dropping onto the floor.  As a result, VW dealers now refuse to sign a car off unless it's proven new bolts were used.  I know some folk don't understand the purpose of stretch bolts, but we can take that operational change from VW as a strong message to......not re-use stretch bolts!!

I didn't even bother asking my local dealer. INA kit including water pump was £130 from GSF... The genuine bits including new bolts were around £250 last time I looked, to be charging nearly a grand they must really not want the work.
