It has a cam belt, a chain for the cam at the other end, also an oil pump chain.

@Tomi9870 cambelt and water pump should be done every 4 years or 60k miles what ever comes first,
cam chain doesn’t really need to be changed until in becomes a little noisy or some like to get it changed around the 100k miles mark, that’s when I’ll be doing my chain anyway.
I believe the Oil pump chain is not normally changed there definitely isn’t any interval time for it anyway, maybe just if it become noisy like the cam chain.

Gen 3 racks are on the mk6 golf but considered a good upgrade for the mk5 golf when the rack eventually goes, normally the streering rack will start making a knocking sound or the steering wheel light will be on on the dash.

Yeah there’s no service interval on the chains but the cam one does wear out. Oil pump one seems to last forever if the car is looked after.

Gen 3 rack needs an additional £100 loom and (optionally) a software update on the J500 ABS module, which only VAG ODIS software can do......so extra cost and faff to factor in. Worth doing though as it’s a far better rack than gen1/2.

If it has had rigorous servicing (10k or less, without fail), then you almost certainly don't need to worry about the cam follower. Mine was as new at 60k under those conditions. 2 years would only be necessary if you were remapped.

I would very much second the corrosion - and in particular the boot floor. I spent a few weekends under mine at it's 10th birthday, scraping surface rust, and doing the whole rust-remover, rust-killer, epoxy-paint, stone guard, underseal routine. Most of the car was OK, but that boot floor was covered in surface rust. Took 3 goes with the rust remover gel and wire brush to get close enough to clean to use the rust converter. Mk5s are going to get very rare in the next 5 years.

  Interestingly, I never see rusty Passats or A3s of the same vintage.  Same car essentially
