Golf (2005 Mk5 SE) Central Locking System Malfunctioning?

Hi all,

Having a small issue with my central locking system on my golf. (It's a 2005, Mark 5, SE, 1.9)

It only works when I'm right next to my driver side door, and even then I have to press it several times for it to work. It's an issue I can cope with, but it is rather annoying. I've replaced the battery in the remote, so it's not that.

Any ideas what it could be? Many thanks for any suggestions!
