bitten by the modding bug
chopper:
hello chaps, im new to the forum, but have been reading your posts for a while now getting tips on how to make my Ed30 all the more sweet.
Two years ago, after much debate as to whether i should go for a R32( love the exhaust note, and the 4wd) or a GTI Ed30, I opted for the lighter, more nimble but equally as quick GTI Ed30 DSG in Diamond Black.... plus id noticed from the forums that the ED30 had a hell of a lot of tuning potential....
The 12 week wait from VW was unbearable, but seeing the car in the showroom car park was a sight to behold. I hadnt test drove before i bought it, but the first drive didnt disappoint, and i new things would only get better.
The three year warranty was always on my mind, and i said to myself i would wait til it expired before starting the mods. but i just cant help myself. so last year i started with the Carbonio Air Intake, which did seem to make a small difference in terms of power.
Next came the WALKit - this transforms the car. Understeer, wheel hop and torque steer practically gone. Top mod- would highly recommend it, though it does make for a firmer ride.
I got the Bluefin Stage 1 two days after the WALKit. Had a few issues with Superchips, who sent me the map for a Manual car, which didnt work well on my DSG, then the Superchips server wouldnt work properly with my Bluefin when they tried to send my new remap. But they were very helpfully and emailed it instead. The kick in the back power was unreal, with wheel spin up into third gear! I kept thinking my Bridgestones werent going to like it very much. On a dry day on open roads its a totally different car. A bit of torque steer if you mash your foot down, but i think the WALKit controls it well.
Got married last year too, so mods stopped while my finances recovered.... but now im ready for more.
Ive ordered a Brembo GT brake kit, and KWV3 coilovers from Awesome, and they should be here next week. I find the standard brakes fade really easily, and with the extra power i just dont trust them to stop the car as quickly as it should. As for the coilovers, i think the car would look a lot meaner with a lower stance, and would benefit from more control on the bumps and corners. the V3s allow for more adjustment to suit my needs.
Anyone got any tips on how much to lower by? i dont want to take front valance off on speed bumps!
Im building up for the next stage, which of course is MORE POWER!
I cant decide between Milltek Resonated TBE or APR RSC - i dont want too much drone. Ive heard a few sound clips from the forum, but its hard to judge between them.
Would then opt for Bluefin Stage 2.
Also on the wishlist is Quaife ATB LSD, probably with the guys in VWR who seem to have the most experience with the DSG box.
May go for a HPFP, and push for Bluefin Stage 2+.
Most likely get all this done at same time to avoid playing aound with the engine too often.
And to finish off i would like a set of 19" Black edition BBS CHs, modded with a red lip.... but now im just getting carried away....
Though if anyone has the 19* 8.5" and do they find much rubbing?
Il get some picks up soon enough. Im off now to do some homework on halogen light upgrades - Osram Nightbreakers or Phillips Xtreme?
My wife got a new BMW with xenons and difference in the light quality with halogens is night and day! I need something to bring mine nearly up to power
Andy:
welcome to the forum..that us some list of modding.. I think Tc has kwv3 on his ed30 who will advise you best on them or have a look through the members build threads
I put ths osram bulbs in mine because i got them cheap from work :rolleye:but they make a hell of a difference-not tryed the philips bulbs..
get some pics posted up of your car
chopper:
cheers mate. just ordered the osram night breakers off Regal Auto Bulb. Good price on their website.
Il see if TC mentions the ride height on any of his threads

The KW V3 is by no means a bad set up, i have it myself, it's one of the two sets in top of the class.
I'm pretty low with Pescaras on 225/40-18, and only in roundabouts pushing hard do i get a bit of rubbing, i believe it can be solved by removing the top screw inside the fender.
The best way IMO is to buy the Seibon front fenders, they are 10mm wider than stock in the top of the wheel arches.
As a friend of mine has Milltek and i have APR, i can only say if you don't like drone get APR as it has no drone at all, APR FTW :notworthy:
chopper:
do you know what size the tips are on the APR? i know Milltek have done an 80mm tip for the ED30.
Is your mates Res or Non Res?
How much have you dropped on the V3s?
im thinking of going conservative on 20-25mm, roads can be bad around my neck of the woods, and speed bumps are sprouting up everywhere
