RCD330 upgrade
« on: November 10, 2020, 01:44:58 pm »
I have an 06 gti and I’m looking at upgrading to a RCD330 stereo.

I’ve been doing a lot of research but I’m not entirely sure what I need, I’ve been reading that older models suffer battery drainage, so I was wondering if anyone can help in letting me know what parts I need?

I’m not sure if it matters but I’ve seen it mentioned a lot, so I don’t have a multi functional steering wheel though I will be upgrading to one in the future so will I need another adapter when that time comes?

Any help will be appreciated thank you

I've just spend a good hour on the search function trying to work this one out myself.

I've got a 2006 sit up and beg spec GTI and from what I can gather we need a canbus gateway revision/coding so it doesn't nail the battery when the car is off (older ones cant tell the newer stereos to power down).

Not sure on the steering wheel adaptor but going of what's on here info wise you will need one as to which I'd do your research on the search function on the forum as a fair few have done this mod.

Personally speaking if any members reading this that can do a simpletons guide to the whole canbus gateway revisions that would be a huge help as its confusing reading from about 12 different posts.

Also there appear to be canbus modulators sold when buying android units etc would these work when it comes to battery drain issues?  If so can one of these be put in with a RCD330 or even a RNS310/5 unit? Trying to keep it as OEM as possible with out breaking the bank.

Sorry for the post hijack Dean but hopefully this will answer both our questions

I used this gateway on my 07 gti. https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=7N0+907+530+gateway+&_sacat=0 you can get to it via a hatch under the wipers which is quicker than pulling the dash out above the pedals. It needs recoding.

Yh I’ve been doing lots of research but reading different things, I think it all boils down too the year of the car. I think 2007 your fine but anything pre 2007 you need extra bits. I just can’t find exactly what those bits are. I was hoping that someone with a pre 07 car with the radio might of just been able to see you need these bits.

As far as I can tell I think I need this to prevent drainage, you can connect to other sources but you loose functions and can’t programme it

Desperately trying to make a decision on this myself!  Looking at the 330+ as well as the 315 DAB+ and an RNS 510 DAB 'style' as below. Anyone have any experience of the latter? Plug and play apparently with additional parts on sale in the listing??? Be ideal if so!

The 330+ and 315 need new CAN gateway and recoding which sounds like a pain.

How about this one for size comes with everything needed so plug and play also comes with it’s own can-bus so no battery drain.😀

I had a quick skim through the listing - my apologies if I missed something - but I didn't see anything that suggested it would be self governing or avoid battery drain.

The issue is the car does not know what the new head unit is and what to do with it - it just keeps giving it power - that's what mine did.
Until I got round to updating the canbus - I changed the switching at the fuse board from always on to ignition on -doing this alone confirmed canbus was the reason for flat battery and other strange behaviour.

I found the hardest part of updated canbus is installation being upside down in the foot well and large hands didn't help.
Other than that if you have VCDS cable its any easy task - if you dont you need to find someone who can code a new one in.

Hi,  not sure If this will help but this is the stereo I fitted in the first week of Oct . I was also concerned about the possible battery drain too The only reason I went with this one was due to the fact it stated in the article on eBay under key features it did not drain your battery.  Since fitting I’ve had no dramas at all.

So theirs no way of doing it without changing the gateway?

Think I might just try the below options if it means I can avoid having to do all of the coding if I'm honest

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-AUX-input-adaptor-interface-Golf-Mk5-jack-RCD300-RCD500-CTVVGX004-Volkswagen/321464029843?_trksid=p2485497.m4902.l9144

That last one has a "canbus decoder box" which i assume plugs in the normal way just tells it the relevant signals so it switches fully off etc
