White mk5 GTI rescue
« on: November 07, 2023, 04:01:41 am »
Hi all,

It has been a while since I have done a build thread but thought this would be a worthwhile project for if anything myself to document.

In the past I have had two Edition 30's, the first replaced by a mk7 R and when the prices went mental a couple of years ago that was sold and replaced with a stage 2+ edition 30 which again was replaced with a 5 door mk7 R for child transportation purposes.

I have always been into VW's, I still have a 20vt mk2 in white and a lupo GTI which are both used regularly, I wasn't necessarily in the market for a mk5 however I saw this on facebook marketplace and it was at a good price and for me a white mk5 despite being 18 years old still looks incredibly modern.

The car:

2005 Gti, winter pack, Sat nav headunit which would of been very snazzy back in 2005. The car has an interesting history as it was the evo magazine long term test vehicle (See: https://www.evo.co.uk/volkswagen/golf/654/vw-golf-gti-pictures )

The car has covered 150k but is 99% standard with only the monzas being turned black

The main sticking point is the AXX engine has eaten its cam follower and therefore the cam lobe is worn, this leads me to a slight crossroads....

Repair the AXX

Fit BWA keep ko3

Bite the bullet and go CDL, I did enjoy 2+ although they were both DSG models

Other mods include: mk7 R front brakes, S3 rears, Underside refresh, Some nice suspension/coilovers, and a wheel change, sorry Monzas!

What a clean example with 150k on the clock, paintwork looks spot on from what I can see. Well done for rescuing it! :innocent:

It's so original even the cam follower wasn't changed. :signLOL:

If it were me and the funds were available I'd bite the bullet and go for a lower mileage CDL engine, they're just superior and you have so many options going forward if you get bored. Looking forward to this project, keep us updated!

So...

I've bought a low milage BWA engine from a 2009 TT. Yes I could of gone CDL etc but I couldn't quite justify the cost on what is an unknown quantity vehicle. Stripped the front end off today, waiting for a long 10mm 12 point bit to arrive from amazon so I can get the shafts off tomorrow. Engine out, box off (Steam clean the box at work, its disgusting!). Trying to find a reasonably priced S3 intercooler whilst the front is off and hopefully picking up a miltek system next week. Will do golf r calipers and coilovers when the engine is running again. Bloody love how easy these are to strip and build again. Should have it back and running if I chip away at the engine build before xmas.

Its back on the road. I had some paternity time over Christmas and new year to do the bulk of it, work has consisted of:

BWA engine from a 2009 TT on 72K, used the turbo and all ancillaries.
BC Coilovers
Speedline wheels 18'
Alloy S3 arms and hubs
Milltek Cat back
ED30 steering wheel and gearknob
s3 intercooler
New rad and condenser

I put a few miles on to make sure all was ok, last week I had done

Cambelt and thermostat
Pick up pipe
Thermostat replace (Was dropping to 70 when driving)

So far so good, with the addition of a RCD330 its incredible just how nice of a car a now 19 year old mk5 really is. I think it has a map on it but its a bit torque steer prone. So probably next winter will consist of a refurbished rear end, k04 swap and some sort of LSD. For now I will enjoy it
