Looks like he's  mullered the dash panel insert to try to get the stereo surround to fit.

Is that before or after you saw him for the 2nd time? That looks awful!

Has to be the second time. It looks even worse now than previous pictures, I would get new stereo surrounds and do it yourself. Just follow a YouTube guide as it's fairly simple to do.

He didn't look at it the second time. Ended up agreeing a refund instead. This is how it is now

Basically the same as before although I have got the fascia plate to fit a bit better. Can't get rid of the gap at the left side of above and suspect I won't be able to without replacing the whole stereo insert plastic cage thing. Might even need the vent trim aswell as I can't really tell if it's out of shape or not.

Something's definitely preventing the 2 halves of the fascia fitting back together properly.

Yep. My worry though is that because the hole is just not big enough to take the stereo, even if I replace the cage it still won't fit taking me back to square one. Just seems strange that the Kenwood is apparently too big (even after some of the plastic around the edge was dremelled) but the Pioneer before it fitted fine. Had a look online and did find someone else saying they had a Kenwood double din too big for an Astra but nothing else.

unfortunately I think you're going to have to take it all apart to find out exactly where the problem is and what can be done to correct it.

I think I have realised what's happened now. The plastic he has hacked it is not part of the car it's the plastic surround part of an aftermarket stereo fitting kit (must have been put in with the previous Pioneer stereo). So what he has done is used the cage that came with the Kenwood and forced it in (after hacking the plastic), when it needs to be in a cage that comes with the aftermarket stereo fitting kit. So now I need another fitting kit or at least the plastic trim part and cage, and to refit the stereo. Does this sound right?

I had same issue with my Sony headunit and aftermarket fascia.  The Sony cage would not fit in the 'internal' part of the aftermarket cage.  Only way to make it for would be hacking the plastic as your installer has done.  As you say, what he should have done is use an aftermarket cage and not the one supplied with headunit.  The after makert one will also allow you to move the headunit in or out to make it fit flush.

I've just purchased an RCD330+ with wireless CarPlay. Guy on YouTube called DDRen sells these and the associated kit. He's in China, but a top lad and very very clued up, plus replies to any texts or questions immediately. - https://www.rcd330.com/

I've also bought a flip rear boot badge camera, which integrates in to the RCD330+ I've started fitting everything last night so will post up some pics later. I love the fact that this set up has wireless CarPlay, hence once my iPhone is paired, I don't have to plug it into the head unit everytime to activate CarPlay

Cheers

Hey man, do you have steering wheel controls and if so, did they work with this setup?

One of these and I love it. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000421669956.html?spm=2114.12010615.8148356.1.1592582bvmupX3
did you have to use the extra fuse to make sure it switched off with the engine and doesn't drain battery?

btw OP; there's a 12 page thread on this that I've been reading (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,109724.135.html)

If your golf is older than 08 you just need to get the newer gateway https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=7N0+907+530+gateway+&_sacat=0 and have it coded. The jumping fuse thing is a bodge job.

How can you idenitify your existing gateway?

They have a code number on them but chances are if you are pre 08 you need to upgrade.

Thanks - was there a reason why you went for the 330 and not the 360 Pro?

I'm looking for a friend and think I might be missing something!
