Helix Clutch Issue
« on: July 14, 2021, 12:53:47 am »
Hi all,

I have a MK5 Golf GTI, loads of work done over lockdown to get it ready for a Stage2+ tune later in the year.

Needing a new gear box that I found in the end, I decided to go for the "Helix Dual Mass Flywheel Performance Clutch Kit - VAG TFSi Platform" with the LUKs DMF at the same time, and an uprated cable to go with it.

The clutch should be way past bed in now, but I do have an odd more-often-than not issue that is doing my head in.

There is a slight chatter coming from the car on idle that goes away when the clutch is pressed in.
With the ECS clutch stop in, sometimes 1st and reverse are hard to find. This issue goes away when the clutch stop is fully down, or out. I'd love to run it because when things are OK its perfect.
With or without the clutch stop, sometimes the peddle sticks, especially after down changes. I have to sometimes use my foot to pop it back up and loses its feel and goes soft.

Once in gear I don't seem to suffer any slip, gear changes seem fine etc.

I've been told the chattering is normal. Before I get stuff looked at again, I've read a good bleed of the system (which I have done) can sometimes help. I did that at the time I put the new clutch cable in

Any thoughts? Thank you in advance.

That sounds like it could be the clutch master cylinder, or the classic gearbox shaft play.  You might need to pop the plastic end cap off the gearbox and shim the play out.  It's a common thing on early gearboxes.  Later ones don't do it as much.

Sorry should have mentioned after some research on here I thought it would the shim fix - I bought both the sizes for my mechanic and after taking the cap off they didn't see any play, so didn't install.

Cheers

Just been having a feel around under the pedal and winding the clutch stop back in a bit. One thing I have noticed...

The first little push on the pedal with my hand there is no stiffness, and then a slight 'click' as I push further and get resistance. Its that first little push where there is nothing

Any advice appreciated cheers
