Are stock headlights sh*t?
« on: December 02, 2021, 12:08:00 pm »
As I’ve been doing a bit of driving in the dark just lately, I can’t help but feel that I can barely see.
Are stock Mk5 headlights that bad? Or could it be time for some new bulbs?

Yeah they are sh1te, both xenon and regular.  Early 2000s technology though. Modern LED headlights are like lighthouses by comparison.

I have retrofitted xenons, they are better than halogens but as Pudding says, not brilliant.

Which is odd because my BMW E90's bi-xenons were incredible and that was of a similar age.

Haven't tried E90 xenons but E46/E39s weren't great, about the same as the MK4/5!

The most annoying thing about my Xenons (OEMs) is they wobble/shake over bumps. Grrrrr. My MK4 R32's did the same.  Do other folks do that?  Is something busted inside the lamp assembly?

Cheers chaps, I’ll try some different bulbs for now.

I had an E92 BMW, although it was the revised 2010 model, and that was like driving round with 2 football floodlights.

Maybe these guys have something that will boost MK5 lights. https://www.morimotohid.com/lighting/projectors

I had an E46 330i before my Eddie, the xenons were superb imo. I have halogens in my golf and have always used the best bulbs, I actually find them very good on the whole. Been driving a lot at night on spirited drives along the A303 and A30 through Devon/Cornwall. Had no issues at all with them, some very dark parts along there but felt confident and assured of the view in front of me. I was using Philips X-treme vision 130%, which I have now put in my dips, main bulbs now using Racing Vision 150% which are very good -great white light.

My pennies worth!

Having experienced horrific light output in previous cars - let's just say the low bench mark for me many years ago was a ur-quattro with standard bulbs - that was terrifying -  I have to say I am very happy with my Mk5 standard Xenons, they respond quickly enough for screaming along country lanes and throw enough light on motorways to be confident EDIT - that is on my own, no other light sources - on review Xenons seem to be dim.

The most annoying thing about my Xenons (OEMs) is they wobble/shake over bumps. Grrrrr. My MK4 R32's did the same.  Do other folks do that?  Is something busted inside the lamp assembly?

I've never noticed any wobble/shake from my Xenons.

Mine were originally perfect, with no shake, completely solid, but after taking the front end apert to install new intercooler I can see on big motorway signs they now jiggle - suspect something has either not been fully tightened - or - has worked itself loose...need to get busy with the thread lock!
At least in its current state it now provides some encouragement for motorway lane hoggers to move over.

Maybe these guys have something that will boost MK5 lights. https://www.morimotohid.com/lighting/projectors
A mate redid his Mk4 headlights with these - reported very good results with superb finish - but they are a custom install

They sound like just just a bulb kit, they work, but are really not great for other road users.
The issue is if fitted to standard headlight the reflectors are designed for a sideways filament and not the Xenon bulb that is pointing straight ahead - this mismatch creates bright spots and dazzling other cars even on dipped beam.
Thankfully, MOT's have really clamped down on them, failing cars with improperly fitted aftermarket kits.

The old school way to fix this was relays triggered by original wiring, with a beefy direct feed off the alternator and then fit 180 watt bulbs - this works with glass lenses and metal reflectors, its how I fixed my brown trouser issues in my ur-quattro - but suspect in the plastic Mk5 headlights they may get a bit melty.

Were LED's being pushed forward as the solution - with the brightness of Xenon, low heat, but without the issues fitting into standard headlights? EDIT - all the reviews I have read into LED's are they dont give any where as much output as Xenons.

I think the Morimoto stuff was more for BMWs etc with removable lenses.  Not possible with our lights. Well, not graceful removal at least!  I just lobbed their link up in case things have changed in recent years!

I've noticed it's just the passenger one that jiggles, and it's obviously worse with stiff aftermarket suspension.  It's just a little wobble after hitting a big bump, otherwise they're fine.  Both lamp units are bolted in tightly as far as I can tell.  I think the motor inside that does the auto-levelling has some kind of ball joint on it, which according to some research - may have popped out, or something.  It's in the 'low priority but annoying tray' for another day.

As for the light output, I noticed when I unlocked the car at dusk, I could see the glass dome in the middle was all hazey and not clear.  Closer inspection revealed that's because the plastic covers are so peppered with micro chips, they are refracting all the light away.  I guess I'll be out there in the spring with sandpaper and polish then.

There's a Youtube channel that specialises in LED car bulbs (can't remember it's name) but they pretty much said what we all know instinctively anyway - avoid the cheap shat.

Branded stuff works best apparently - https://www.powerbulbs.com/blog/2020/10/what-are-the-best-led-headlight-bulbs

The branded stuff is naturally 3 or 4 times the price.

Just to follow up on this if anyone digs it up.

First I tried these;
https://www.amazon.co.uk/OPL5-H7-Headlight-Waterproof-Conversion/dp/B08RRY1KQG/ref=sr_1_17_sspa?crid=22UCCYESHBHMY&keywords=H7%2Bled&qid=1643091964&sprefix=h7%2Bled%2Caps%2C69&sr=8-17-spons&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUE4VVEzWkxHN0dDTDQmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAwMTU5NDQzTDNDMEMxS0JXR0dUJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA5Mjg1NzVXQjZZV0ZaTE1WRVgmd2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9tdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl&th=1

Fitted just right so they were swappable so I could easily return to standard. Light output was shockingly bad, not very bright and like a scattered pattern. Tried messing with my lights but made no improvement, ended up going back.

Next I tried these;
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Super-White-Effect-Upgrade-Headlight/dp/B07BK3QY9C/ref=sr_1_15?crid=1DB28QA5B9KDL&keywords=H7+100w+bulb&qid=1643092340&sprefix=h7+100w+bulb%2Caps%2C52&sr=8-15

Was ordering something else so for a laugh I put these in the basket. They were as bright as the stock bulbs, but the light colour was chavvy and one the full beam bulbs died straight away. Went back...

Finally settled on these;
https://www.amazon.co.uk/OSRAM-BREAKER-brightness-headlight-64210NB200-HCB/dp/B092JMZTDR/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3SX1MRI4XXS03&keywords=h7%2Bosram%2B200&qid=1643092588&sprefix=H7%2BOST%2Bam%2B200%2Caps%2C51&sr=8-2&th=1

The difference is literally night and day, very bright, not too white and lovely smooth pattern. Very happy and solved my problem, plenty of confidence driving at night now.
