Can't help with compatible format - but you may struggle to power the drive via USB from the head unit.- edit just read its an SSD...but how would you plug it in?
I would throw the music on an SD card, when ripping the music, just don't go mad with the file sizes.

I use a cheap bluetooth module from Amazon hard wired to the RCD 310, and just stream from my phone.   My entire music library is only 128GB or something, a month's worth of music according to iTunes.   

I can't imagine how many CDs would fill up a 1TB SSD.  More than you can ever listen to, back to back, for over a year.  A bit overkill for the car I think  :grin:
