Japanese imports
« on: July 13, 2022, 09:39:16 am »
Hi everyone

I'm looking into getting a Mk6 R and it seems a lot of them are actually Japanese imports...

I wanted to get some of your thoughts on purchasing a Japanese import that's already been registered in the UK. Things like private resale value, underseal protection, Japanese stickers.
I know that the underside should be mint, I didn't check on my first inspection, but also Japan cars don't get as much underseal from what I've read so I'd have to top that up myself.
Would VW have any history on the car if I get the VIN?

Is anyone put off a Japanese import? Or would actually rather buy a Japanese import because of no rust?

Thanks

Hi i have a japan import standard mk5 gti and it has no rust whatsoever despite having nearly 100k miles on it when imported. From what i have read the Japanese treat their cars (all possessions for that matter) very well so it should have been well looked after.

Mine came with the service history so not sure if you can check with VW or not,  has it not got any paperwork?

Resale wise i think some people might have reservations with it being an import but if its a good example it will sell. I would say for slightly less than a like for like UK car though.

Have you thought about importing one? There are companies that specialise in it both here in the UK and Japan. Im currently looking to import a mk7 gti and have spoke to TorqueGT and also a Japanese company called Japan car direct. Google them and you can view the auctions, have seen a few MK6 R's on there recently.

Edit: This one is due for auction in a few days with just 30,000km

That's some great info, thanks mate.

I've heard the same, the car I looked at has a few stone chips and a chip in the glass but mint otherwise.

It does have service history, I just didn't look at it on the first inspection.

I thought the same for resale value.

I did check out some importers but I don't want to deal with that risk tbh!
