VAG have changed oil supplier yet again

VW have ditched our favourite Quantum.

We now get this stuff, which is made by Shell.  £29+VAT.

Thanks for the update, although ive just been using castrol edge. Seem to be getting through a fair bit aswell. Car has done over 100k miles and im sure its using a litre every 750 miles or so. Although ive just read a litre every 600 miles is acceptable according to VW

On the plus side at least its getting the oil refreshed every few thousand miles.

Mine used to use loads like that as well. the rocker cover gasket had a small air leak on high boost that was only really noticeable when it was tuned, changed this gasket and has not used any since, at least not enough to show up on the dipstick. Surprising how much it can throw out from a little leak like that. My boost pipes to intercooler still leak a little as its unavoidable but not enough that it ever needs topping up now.

Interesting, mine has been mapped aswell. Thanks for the tip, will i be able to tell or is it just a case of changing it?

If its severe then it may show in a high gear on full throttle. Will be a bit like losing power and the revs struggling to climb as the boost escapes. If you have a loud intake then sometimes you can hear the boost escaping. Mine was quite severe but just stable enough for it to be mapped. I'd come to terms with crazy oil usage years ago, was shocked when that actually fixed it! I always wondered why so many people said since switching to 5w40 they stopped burning oil and yet mine was still using loads.

You’re not far wrong there as the average age of the oil in the sump will be under 2000 miles.

Thanks for the heads up pudding.

Interesting that VW have their own branded oil as well as the quantum stuff. However, this is similar to the screenwash - VW have their own branded stuff and so do quantum

Would be interested to see how the VW Special G oil compares to quantum platinum 5w40. (I understand platinum is discontinued and is now replaced by quantum platinum plus but happy to be corrected on this).

For those after a 5L bottle of Special G, it's £23 delivered from VWmotapsrt eBay store https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154795368403?var=0&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338343596&toolid=10001&customid=eb%3Ag%3Avms%3Aeb%3Ap%3A154795368403%3BCj0KCQjwuO6WBhDLARIsAIdeyDIakzyQjuY8XaSJB2vsI8E_zklF21eL3BEJ39emHtVdWe1-V6S2bFMaAin8EALw_wcB&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A18H40ezwDTHm6_ijpOjNtTA45&gclid=Cj0KCQjwuO6WBhDLARIsAIdeyDIakzyQjuY8XaSJB2vsI8E_zklF21eL3BEJ39emHtVdWe1-V6S2bFMaAin8EALw_wcB

What weight are you running? Try 5w40 if not already. Also, I’ve found that most of the leaks on these cars aren’t that difficult to fix. Rocker cover and vaccum pump seal being the most obvious. Worth cleaning up the engine and trying to chase them down one by one.

The VAG screen wash is actually really decent. The wiper blades seem to last longer with that stuff.

I put the Special Fried OG in on Saturday and it seems fine. Quiet and smooth  :happy2: I'll monitor the consumption but my engine isn't a big drinker, so it will take a while, but I have no qualms using it.

The dealer told me Special G is all you can get for petrol engines without particulate filters now, so it clearly isn't a low ash blend. I'm not sure what they now sell for engines with PPF/DPFs.  I'll find out when I do an oil change on the TDI.

I suspect TPS will still be punting the Quantum stuff - will find out soon other half's C7 A6 Avant is due a service.
@Pudding - Bit of a price hike, or were they just punting the Q stuff out the door?

Yeah I reckon Quantum will still be available, just not through dealers anymore. It's a popular oil in BMW and Merc communities as well, so can't see it going anywhere.

I think VAG are just standardising all their fluids under one "G" umbrella, and it looks like Shell outbid Fuchs on the oil.  Which is no bad thing as it's probably Shell Helix Ultra in a different tub.

It's a £50 oil change with a filter, full retail, which isn't too bad tbh.  If my normal parts chap was there, he'd have done both for £40, but no discount from the newbie on this occasion.

@Pudding Fully agree on the screen wash - i've used the VW stuff since the day i got the ED30.

I will give the special G 5w40 a try at the next service - Im switching over from Castrol Edge 5w30.

Well, the 'Special G' has turned out to be Special Shat.  Not recommended. My engine has scoffed 700ml of it over 2300 miles, where it would only use 500ml over 4000 miles with the Quantum. Baaaaaah.

So I popped into TPS after work and grabbed this bundle of joy for 80 quid.  According to TPS man, this stuff is like gold dust now.
