Xenon headlights dipped down
« on: July 27, 2022, 10:02:25 am »
Went for an evening drive yesterday and noticed that the xenon headlights are dipped right down which gives quite poor visibility. I've read that it might be a broken level sensor but wanted to check if I am right in thinking there are 2, one on the front near side and one on the rear near side?

Could it be either one which is broken or is the front sensor the one which controls the headlights?

If this is intact is there anything else it could be?

Yes there are two in those locations, on the front and rear control arms. Both control the headlight aim and if either one breaks it can aim the headlights into the ground like that. Check them both first because it's most likely that.

I had this recently. It turned out to be the motor within the headlight unit itself (drivers side) that was faulty.

The motor was (off the top of my head) was £120 (genuine part) + a couple of hours labour.

Does the golf only set the level once and that is it? The reason I ask is went for a drive yesterday evening, didn't put the headlights on till a little later into the drive and they remained low. Went to fill up and when I started the car again and put the lights on they levelled and were as they should be.

The car is part on a slight incline so wondering if this is why they remain low?

They do a level check every time you start the car I believe.

Get a scan tool and look in the Xenon range module for fault codes.
