What oil is best for my ed30

If it kicks out blue smoke, that is where your oil is going. Valve guides and/or seals are shot. Under normal driving conditions you don't notice the smoke as you don't generally idle for 10 mins or more, unless stuck in traffic.
If not guides and seals, it will be knackered piston rings, so get a compression check done to outrule that. Worn turbo bearings can weep a bit of oil into the exhaust as well.
Mobil 1 5W50 is good for reducing consumption, and not a bad idea for engines past 150K anyway tbh.

Thanks for the advice
I've been keeping an eye out for smoke but I'll try that method. Compression test was carried out last month with no issues there. Suspecting it may be seals. My main issue is whether the new oil grade is suitable for my car with it being stock. Would 5w50 be too thick? I know how clued up you are on these so if yours was stock what grade would you be using?

Tried Castrol Edge 5w30, She'll Helix 5w40, Triple QX 10 w40. All about the same.
Last oil change I used Miller's CTS nanodrive (as mentioned above) 5w40. Since then oil consumption as more than halved. Not topped it up yet. It's used about 0.5l in around 2000 miles, but if need to check that. Essentially it's much better since Miller's.
Other things that helped in the past - new PCV, new rocker cover.

Thanks I'll look at changing the gasket. Is yours stock?

Yea it's stock. I changed the whole rocker cover, not just the gasket. The passages on the under side of the rocker had started to come apart, which meant the pcv system wasn't working as intended.

I use 5/40 Millers but quite a few use Quantum 5/40 which is cheaper.
Uses less oil than when using 5/30.

I've been using 0 or 5W40 since 75K miles (it's now on 176K). 5W30 as many others have found just gets consumed too quickly.
5W40 is the correct grade for stock GTIs on fixed (10K) servicing anyway. 5W30 is only for (variable) longlife servicing.
I have my doubts about the oil pump coping with thick oils like 5 or 10W50 and 10W60 in the long term, but old engines with sloppy bearing clearances would put less load on the pump anyway, so it might work out OK.
skkane:
Using Liqui Moli 10W60 on mine as previous owner swore by it, said not to use anything else. Pretty high mileage @ 172k miles. He said it doesn't use oil between changes but I will see for myself, currently on ~600miles since my 1st oil change on it.
