Possible new camshaft ?

Hi all
I’m getting an awful noise from engine, sounds ropey as f**k…… my next door neighbour, a 60 year old lady even commented on how rough it sounds.
My mechanic came and had a listen and reckons it’s a camshaft problem…… the sound IS coming from the camshaft area to be fair….
Just done 110,000 miles for a 2005 gti
How much am I looking at if it is a camshaft ?

Possibly a busted VVT oil control ring in the chain cover. It's getting more and more common as these engines age.
