golf gti mk5 2007 losing power in higher gears on motorway

recently purchased a golf gti mk5 2007
when i drive on the motorway in the higher gears 4th 5th or 6th i keep losing power
happens at around 3500rpm doing over 60mph
revs stay high and even if i attempt to change gear it just has no power till i slow right down or come to a stop
please help ?
