1.9 TDI BXE 2007 intermittent stalling
(1/1)
Cjm:
First post after moving from a 2001 Audi A3 to a 1.9tdi match bxe engine code...nothing fancy lol
I had an incident of thinking I had run out of fuel a year and a half ago, at the time I thought the gauge was faulty.. not so sure now that I had run out of fuel as it's happened again when I knew I want empty..also happened about 6 months ago ...anyways....
Driving along last Sunday and suddenly felt a bit of engine power loss, sort of stuttering a bit, like you'd think if the engine wasn't getting fuel and felt exactly like the previous time. About 20 secs later the engine died. The guage was reading half ISH a tank. Because something similar had happened before I thought I'd run out due to a faulty guage.
My brother popped out an hour later with a gallon can, put in and it started.
I drove exactly 8 miles to a hospital appointment and it did the same eventually cutting out, but I'd only been 8 miles and only a mile of that urban?. Luckily it was at the hospital, so sorted out the appointment for about an hour, came out and it started???
I was actually on an in road so I drove it to a proper parking space, let it idle for a couple of minutes, drove around the car park, all in all had it going for five minutes at least.
Parked up, turned off, used toilets and then decided to go for a longer run.
Drove 200yds and did the same but wouldn't start. So something else going on other than an empty tank as I should still have had something left.
Then a RAC nightmare lol...another story for another day 🤬🤬
the next day the Rac bloke came out and it wouldn't start. I had brought some diesel, put a gallon in and it started. He read for codes when he got there, checked while it was running, nothing showed up, looked at a few things in the engine bay but nothing and he was flummoxed. He gave me a gallon as well to put in.
We had it running for 20 mins .
Eventually not much else to do. So I drove off. Popped in a garage 13 miles away to fill it to the brim but it only took another gallon.
So since I first broke down 4 gallons had gone in and I had driven 21 miles so it couldn't have been a faulty gauge leading to empty tank situation. (Maybe the incident a year half ago wasn't an empty tank?)
So there must be something else going on?
On drive back, another 10 miles, there were two momentary similar symptoms during the first 5 of those last 10 miles. Like it was going to happen again, sort of engine stutter(when I say stutter I mean like you'd think when an engine not getting a smooth fuel supply) and power fluctuation feel, just for 10 seconds each. Once was in 5th once in 4th and my reaction was to drop a gear each time, may have been coincidence but when i did the stutter went. I don't have a lot of examples of it seeming like it was going to happen again during those last 10 miles but the two times seemed to coincide with when I had just slapped the accelerator to the floor. After that I did take a slower controlled approach to accelerating and from that point on I didn't feel it was going to happen again.
Apart from these incidents and stalls I've only known the engine to run fine, no issues I've noticed.
So what sort of things should I be looking at?
Could something as simple as a clogged fuel filter be the cause of all that?
Fuel lines ? Injector loom?
Like I say no codes according to RAC bloke...have a mate coming next couple of days to read for codes, not sure if he has vcds or something else.
If still no codes where do I start?
Any more info I can give to help narrow it down?
