mfsw retrofit help
« on: January 12, 2009, 10:30:29 pm »
Hi guys, Ive been trying to retrofit the gti MFSW tonight and couldnt get the thing working.

for one of two reasons i think:

1. The part number i ordered was 1K0 953 549 AL. this is known to work with MSFW and cruise control, and Non DSG cars
 now when i picked the part up, it said 1K0 953 549 AL on the box. when i opened it, it was a reclaimed part i think. but the part number was different. it was 8p0 953 549 F. i thought this might have the same functionality as said above Part but was for audis. but i tried it, and it didnt work.  it threw up about 3 fault codes

2. or maybe i didnt code it properly. this is what i worked off

0?xxxxx: Vehicle Type
0 = Normal
1 = Special Purpose (e.g Taxi)
0x?xxxx: Transmission
0 = Manual Transmission
1 = Automatic Transmission
0xx?xxx: Steering Wheel
0 = Steering Wheel without Multifunction
1 = 3-Spoke Steering Wheel without Multifunction
2 = 3/4-Spoke Steering Wheel with Multifunction without Cruise & Voice Control
3 = 3/4-Spoke Steering Wheel with Multifunction with Cruise & Voice Control
0xxx?xx: Additional Equipment
+1 = Tiptronic (Shift Paddels)
0xxxx?x: Board Computer / Cruise Control System (CCS)
0 = w/o Board Computer and w/o Cruise Control System (CCS)
1 = with Board Computer and w/o Cruise Control System (CCS)
2 = w/o Board Computer and with Cruise Control System (CCS)
4 = with Board Computer and with Cruise Control System (CCS)
0xxxxx?: Rear Wiper
1 = Rear Wiper not installed
2 = Rear Wiper installed

sooo

the coding for my car should be...

0002002

soo...is the coding wrong or is the part number vw "palmed me off" with not going to work?

im going to vw tomorrow to order a brand new one with a proper part number as a matter of course, but i just wanted to know if should work. if so ill keep it and update the coding

thanks guys! ;)

btw....i have a cruise control stalk on there at the moment. i have not coded that in yet, i think there is a few more hardware bits before it gets working.

i did want to keep each mod seperate but i thought i might aswell put the CC stalk whilst the wheel was off.

i dont seem to have a clock spring sensor so thats why i dont think my cruise will work

Wrong Coding J.

Why didn't you go off of the balloon helper in VCDS??

That unit is the same as in mine

00?xxxx: Transmission
0 = Manual Transmission
1 = Automatic Transmission
00x?xxx: Steering Wheel
0 = 3-Spoke, w/o Tiptronic, w/o Multi-Function
1 = 3-Spoke, with Tiptronic, w/o Multi-Function
2 = 4-Spoke Multi-Function (with Radio Control)
3 = 4-Spoke Multi-Function (with Radio/Telephone Control)
4 = 4-Spoke Multi-Function (with Radio/Telephone/Voice Control)
00xx?xx: Tiptronic/Heating
+1 = Tiptronic on Steering Wheel
00xxx?x: Cruise Control/Board Computer
0 = no Board Computer, no Cruise Control
1 = Board Computer, no Cruise Control
2 = no Board Computer, Cruise Control
4 = Board Computer, Cruise Control
00xxxx?: Rear Wiper
0 = w/o Rear Wiper
1 = with Rear Wiper

right... so it needs to be

0003001

i guess i can code out the CC stalk even tho its fitted. the car would think a standard stalk is on?

I couldn't be sure the 8P unit will work on your car, bottom line is they've supplied the wrong part.

There is no reason to not code the CC stalk.

ive tried again this morning playing around with the coding but it doesnt work with the car! :(

i can get the coding as right as i think it should be, but it still throws up a "unit not coded properly" error.

ive taken the part to VW this morning. they have appologised, said its an AUDI only part and they will have a New 1K0 953 549 AL in for me in the morning

Nah.. just a cheap fleabay copy of ETOS (also came with ETKA V7).

Weirdly enough, I have just changed my wheel to a MFSW and used the controller 1K0 953 549 AL that you mentioned, but although the MFSW works fully as expected, I lost my factory fit Cruise Control. Indeed there are a few people on VWVortex and UK-MKIVs that have also experienced this after fitted the "AL" module.

I've been speaking to VRStu about this and as yet we have been unable to explain why, as the coding is correct, all the buttons work and the light on the dash panel also illuminates.  :confused:

Your car I think is a lot newer than mine, (mines a 2005) and I think (think being the operative word) that my car wasn't designed for the AL coded module. According to ETKA and ETOS, they both indicate that with my slip ring (1K0 959 653 C) that AL isn't compatible and that I would either need to change the slip ring to a version "D", or change my Steering control module to 1K0 953 549 AK (not AL). But like I said, I'm really clutching a straws at the moment.

Seriously considering removing the AL module and going back to the original F version, that was installed as I know this works.

Hopefully you will have better luck ?

Like I said JPC, I'm no expert, so please don't take my comments as gospal, as these are just my findings.

Like I said, I have a copy of Etka and ETOS (although they aren't the latest revisions) and strangley enough, I couldn't find the AL module listed under any golf, just AK. I did however find the AL module listed under "Jetta/Synchro 2006-2007". However, when you look at the picture accompanying the text (below), it shows the US style CC module with the third stalk, not integrated into the indicator stalk as per EU cars ? It also listed the AL module as Model "ROK", which from my limited understanding of ETOS is Korean market !

I'm even more confused than ever now. I deffo now think my problem is the wrong controller. I think that AL will work perfectly if you don't have CC fitted, but if you do (and a midline dash) there seems to be some imcompatability problems.

thanks for that info.

Ive got the proper steering wheel controller fitted today. the buttons work so thats a job done! :)

just a few quick Q's.

The up and down buttons cycle thru my trip computer rather than the radio??
the volume works ok
the ok button switches from trip 1 to trip 2
the star buttons mutes

the list? button doesnt do anything, as expected, no Highline
and the phone button doesnt do anything as expected.

can i just ask if thats whats supposed to happen with the MFSW?

On mine with the highline the up/down buttons function differently depending on the menu shown on the highline display.

They will only change the radio station or track when showing the audio info menu, the default is to scroll through the various stats display, so it sounds about right as you only have the one stats menu on the midline  :happy2:
