Happened in 2002 that, the aircraft was nearly 40 years old and had 21,000 hours on it.

It had fatigue cracks in the central wing box that hadn't been spotted - a ticking time bomb!

As it starts to break up, there is a part that flies off, just as the starboard wing detaches, that is part of the centre wing box.  In my old job, I had to attend a structural integrity and airworthiness course, and this was one of the cases we studied.

It had been repaired in the past using a doubler plate, to strengthen a cracked area.
