Poor sound quality stereo?

I have a 55 plate Mk 5 Golf GTi with what I assume is the standard sound system.  Compared to my previous Mk 4 Golf 1.6 SE i have been really disappointed with the sound quality of the CD/radio.  Is this something others are familiar with?  Can anyone suggest a cost-effective way to improve it, please?  I'm not an expert so not even sure if the issue related to the stereo or the speakers???  Any suggestions most welcome!  Thanks.  Robbie
