Indicator problem - indicate left on stalk and the car indicates right

Hi peeps,

If anyone can help my friend out on this please. He has a MK5 golf 1.6 SE 2004 and when he indicates left the car indicates right on the outside.

The indicator stalk is pulled down to the left but even the right indicator arrow flasher on the dash still shows it is indicating right - all the outside indicators also indicate right.

When you indicate right the car and all interior flashers work and show it as indicating right.

Is it a relay somewhere or could it be an ecu fault?

If anyone could shed some light on this it would be appreciated greatly!

He has just bought it but it is completely standard no mods at all
