Got in my car this morning and realised I'd reached a milestone 200000 miles!

Some rust creeping in on the front of the lower rear aches/rear of sills, but still going strong.

Had a small vacuum leak I was seeing on my digital boost gauge that was getting worse.  I spent ages trying to find it as all connections were dry with reasonably new seals.

I finally discovered the boost sensor for the gauge was bleeding air, so put my old mechanical one back on and solved !

That was a simple fix but a pain to locate.

Fitted a sunstrip on the windscreen. I had one previously but I managed to rip it when I was scraping ice off the windscreen in winter.

Fitted o ring in intercooler hose connector that I'd lost when fitting the s3 intercooler.

Replaced my battery

I've been having battery issues since the start of lockdown. As I was able to work from home it didn't bother me too much and I picked up a new battery charger. The car would be flat if left for a few weeks without driving, so I assumed one of the retrofits is causing a slow battery drain. More recently I've been driving the car every 3 or 4 days, but it still went flat, so that got me thinking my 5 year old battery may be unhealthy.

I did a bit of research on which one to get, it appears that AGM batteries can be fitted, but if your car wasn't fitted with one from factory the charge characteristics may cause issues, as AMG batteries have higher voltage peaks (So your car would require a Battery Management System or Intelligent Battery Sensor to manager them correctly) as well as requiring charging 0.3V above conventional flooded batteries. I then came across EFB, which are Enhanced Flooded Batteries and are a halfway house between Flooded and AGM batteries and can be fitted to cars that came with either from factory. I guess you'd use EFB in your start/stop car if you couldn't stretch to the price of an AGM. For people with a regular battery from factory and EFB makes a nice upgrade; better charge acceptance and typically double the duty cycle and only about 30% more expensive.

Anyhoo, I went for a Varta N70 (an 096 type for our Mk5 cars) and I'll keep you posted how it performs. It was £90 with an eBay 20% off coupon, which is the cheapest I could find and has a 4 year warranty.

I also discovered during my research that Bosch and Varta have been the same batteries for the last 7 years, the only difference being the labels they stick on them. The Varta was cheaper than the Bosch part.

Cheers

The varta e44 is a bit cheaper and a good choice if anyone is searching.

Re-installed a new catalytic converter to my turbo-back. Just all part of returning it to a more grown state.
This is it and is the same as the one I removed some 7 to 8 yrs ago from my Techtonics Tuning Turbo-back;

Yesterday finally replaced the rear nearside boot loom and got my wiper and boot latch working again. Just trying to see if I can get the high level connector out without cutting wires instead, seems doable to me.

Just placed an order for APR's new coils. Finally going to put the stock OEM coils away. Not doing so for any reason other than to see if this all increases fuel mileage and drops/reduces the +7.8% LTFT while still allowing it to run as good as it's been running.

I already use a 5k Ohm spark plug (PFR7B) with a 0.7mm gap. And that gap is sometimes reduced to run well with the OE coils...depends on where I have the peak boost.

These APR coils should allow me to order plugs with the 0.8mm gap (BKR7EIX) with no need to run any plugs with a 0.7mm gap or less. A larger gap should improve fuel burning efficiency. They are less expensive than genuine R8 coils...I like that. I only hope they are durable...as I have never needed to replace the stock genuine coils.

it's been pissing down and I have a leak in the seal so water is pouring onto the pedals. Anyone know the part number for the black seal around the windscreen that goes to the front bonnet
