...and this is what i did. didnt need too much force. i was starting in the top right as suggested by others and it was really tight. once the front two were off it was easier to prise the back off. K&N filter now in place and quite pleased with myself.

I hope you lubed the grommets with some silicon grease before you reinstalled the cover to make its removal next time extremely easy.

'fraid not! in my excitement i just wanted to make sure it went back correctly! i will do this next time. i have some white silicon grease, would that do the job? it wont make the grommets slide out and let the cover rattle about will it?

Just put a smear on the underside of the grommet (side facing the engine) and you'll be fine.
I'm assuming that all four grommet are in the engine cover before you apply the grease.
