Yeah it is a bit weird, the only cars they are used on are the TTS and 3.2 TT. Maybe they though the ~1.5kg per side was worth it.

Agreed, and why the venting on the other side of the disc?

Is there any benefit from drawing the air in from the wheel side rather than the hub?
