Thanks for the the replies, I managed to get it onto a diagnostics a few days ago and there are no fault codes showing. will get the plugs out and carry out a minor service over the bank holiday weekend and hopefully check the DV valve at the same time.

This recently happened to my 08 gti and i replaced the coilpacks and plugs with no difference ,it threw an ecu light on and it turned out to be the primary o2 sensor ,got one from TPS and fitted it reset the ecu and the job was sorted !

Thanks for the help once I've done the plugs and coils as I already have them I will look at the O2 sensor, did the sensor show up on a code reader?

Mine did but was sensor 2 post cat

Thanks guys, plugged it into the code reader again and still nothing.
yesterday on the way home it started again but this time as i was approaching an island it just died on me! :confused:
