Loose Wing Mirror Glass/Lens
« on: April 24, 2013, 08:57:29 am »
Morning fella's,

Ok, although I hate doing it I have no choice in the matter of parking in the college car park. I generally tend to manually push my wing mirrors in, probably makes no difference but you know. Anyway, when leaving college yesterday I pushed the mirrors back in to place as usual. Hopped onto the M4 and the near side mirror glass itself was/is shaking.

I got home and looked at the mirror and its as if its hinged. The top feels nice and secure but the bottom of the glass is not held in at all. There is like a glossy black/grey surface behind. Are these physically held in or is it just adhesive bonded?

Little things like this fustrate me as everything on the car is how it should be, everything works, nothing is broke etc.

Just wondered if anyone has had this before and how you solved it?
Never had a chance to look on etka last night at the mirror build up so will have to tonight.

Thanks.

The mirror is just bonded to a flat backing plate. It's a very common issue. You will be able to pull the mirror glass off entirely very easily now that it's loose. I used Araldite to stick mine back into place.

You can pry off the backing plate then remove the wiring for the heated glass (if they all have it?) then stick it down off the car.  Mine has done the same and I plan on fixing it when I am home.

All done, Araldite to the rescue.  :jumpmove:
Took the wing mirror cover off for easy access.

Oh and haha, I got ID'd for the Araldite.

So this just happened to me too, currently feels secure at the top but loose at the bottom.

Best to just pull off and stick two of those license plate sticky strips to the backing plate?

If do it before it drops off and you need to replace
I used 3m double sided tape about 3 years ago and it's still solid

Okay great, I'm popping to local garage I've known for years (neighbour) after work, to see if he has anything to use.

If not, I'll just use the double sided tape I've got at home.

I always thought the bonding was literally unbreakable .... apparently not lol

I used this Unibond permanent carpet tape to stick my mirror back on when it went flappy on the motorway. Been fine for 1.5 years now.

Only tricky bit is scraping all the old glue off
