Michelin Pilot Super Sports
« on: April 29, 2014, 12:05:42 am »
After several weeks waiting, well about 6 actually, they turned up straight from the factory.

They're not particularly cheap at £575 fitted but I was looking for a tyre that was capable of occasional track days that wouldn't get out of it's depth on circuit and would also deliver good performance on the road in most conditions. I considered the usual suspects that are track focused but road legal but kept coming back to these and decided to wait for Michelin to deliver.

Delays were down to this being a new size/specification as until recently it's been supplied to Porsche, Ferrari and BMW predominantly and I believe sizes now start at 18".

To drive on they are significantly different. I have to consider that I have had them fitted to wheels that are 3kg lighter than the Pirelli alloys (which weigh in at 11kg and are very front heavy) but the grip levels are vastly improved in the dry and particularly the wet. Steering sensitivity (and weight it feels) is improved, as is turn in due to stiffer side walls I'd imagine.

Sudden increases in torque are also better managed in all conditions from low speeds. Braking levels are also higher (in the wet at least) before ABS intervention.

I can't say that F1's were a bad tyre at all, but for a stage 2+ vehicle I rate these very highly. Very happy with them indeed. Not unhappy with the wheels either, I shamelessly followed Red Robins lead here.  :star:

Liking both, the sound of the tyres and the look of the rims!

Slightly offtopic but did you experience the rear of your car being "flighty" or a bit loose with the Goodyear F1s (were they the Assy2's?) in comparison to other tyres such as this Michelin?

How noisy are these compared with the F1s?
Without traction power is nothing!

These are 92Y XL rated so are a like for like replacement.

As to noise I would say that they may even be a shade quieter over certain surfaces, but are certainly no more noisy than the F1's.

The tyres they replaced were indeed asymmetrical 2's. I can't say I ever noticed misbehavior related to the back end, but I have B12 suspension and Eibach ARB's with the back set to soft and the front hard so may have negated this effect this way. Good geometry may also figure in this and your solution when you find it.

I have these on all four wheels in 19" and I must say they're VERY grippy! I would say they're slightly "skittish" under hard acceleration but I'm used to that now!

Got a set sat in the corner of the workshop.  Ordered them in October, they arrived last month on 92Y.

I've done a couple of track days on mine now, they're stunningly capable for a road tyre.

Watch the outers, as they're softer compound and if you're not running much camber, you'll wear them out.
Sideways yo!

Good tip, thanks. I've yet to enjoy mine on track with these. What pressure did you run? I'll have to check my geometry report and see where precisely mine was set. I know for sure I have a reasonable camber on the rear, not sure on the front without checking.
