Hey,

Have had an intermittent engine rattle for about a month now - sounds like the dreaded cam / timing chain noise

like i have said its an intermittent noise and randomly appears for 5-10 second bursts when the engine is idling and cold - raise the revs to 1200 and it will disappear and haven't noticed it once engine has warmed up

Have had my local VAG "specialist" look at it last week and they have diagnosed it as a faulty variator and have quoted £1400!!! to fix

Has anyone heard of this before? or if anyone can recommend me a north east / yorshire  garage for a second opinion it would be much appreciated
