Help with information about 2nd gear
« on: December 14, 2008, 10:30:16 pm »
How do all?

Just after some help with the waggon. I've come to notice that unlike all of the other 6 gears (including reverse) which have a very sharp and composed throw to them and have very little resistance to selecting the gear, how ever 2nd doesn't seem to want to play one bit. It still engages etc but requires a bit of encouragement.

If you could please tell me if your 2nd gear is any different to the rest especially going from 1st to 2nd it would be very helpful. It literally feels like the teeth aren't able to engage and bounce until a certain point (although there's no grinding). I know its probably being a bit pedantic but if its something like the syncro's it best to get the problem identified sooner rather than later.

Cheers,

Luke

Hi snapey and welcome,

for me all the shifts are the same tbh.

First off would be to get the gear linkage alignment check done, theres a chance its been messed with and 2nd happens to be the gear you cant get.  (are 4th and 6th on the same plane  OK ? )
Next stop would be looking at the gearbox ?  :surprised:
Theres also the chance its clutch related  (i.e. its not disengaging when you go for second) , but odd behaviour would happen in all gears I would think.

Im sure someone with more knowledge than me will be along soon ........

p.s. I would also do searches on other forums for related issues

Let us know how it goes, I'd get a local VW specialist on the case if you can  :happy2: , pref not a dealer (you in warranty?)

Its still under warranty and I'm quite pally with the local VW specialist down the road.

As for 4th and 6th there perfectly fine and there are no issues with them. Although there has been the slight feeling of vibration through the clutch pedal at certain points but its pretty intermittent. It doesn't seem to be as much of an issue going from 3rd to 2nd its more 1st to 2nd and I really don't fancy dreading the worse case scenario of a new gearbox because I know if it goes in for one it'll never come out right again, as what happened with my 6n2 polo (previous owner shagged the hell into reverse). Just so you know I don't make a habit of getting through boxes lol.

I'll pop down later this week being as though I've finished work for Christmas.

Mine is a little bit reluctant to go from 1st to 2nd as well, esp when cold.  No problems with other gears.  Now you've mentioned this I'll pay more attention to see if the problem is only when she's cold!

I find mine's a bit difficult to engage second gear (coming from a higher gear), as is fourth and sometimes sixth gear. This only ever happens when I'm raggin the car round a corner and trying to change gear at the same time (as I'm coming out of the corner.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I've got to nip down to VW tomorrow anyway to see them about the magic steering wheel which feels that it has to click with every 10 degree rotation and about the mega rattles coming from the center console so I'll have a word with them about it as well.

With regards to any issues I'd firstly say get in touch with the VW customer care as I did, I basically said the car no longer offered the involvement and experience that I first got when I purchased it and that the rattles are the only thing that I'm being drawn to and they I quote, "Will ensure that the issue is resolved, by doing all suitable diagnostics checks and correcting any faults", which I feel is awesome customer service and now the dealership has no grounds to refuse lol.

Amen.

Is you're a MY2007?

Apparently there was an 'assembly issue' with 2007 model Golf gear boxes.
My dad has had the same issue with his TSI Sport Golf and the dealers broke into the gearbox and replaced 2nd 5th & 6th cog iirc. I'm not very technical myself but if I understood correctly they had to 'break in' to cog 5 to gain acces.

This 'assembly issue' was also confirmed in an Auto Express used car feature on the Golf about a month ago. The dealer also replaced the clutch (but they insisted he paid for this) as they claimed this was 'quite worn' despite haing only covered 18,000 miles. Referred to VW cust services but they would't budge re the clutch bill.

Unfortunately, I don't actually know what the assembly issue was exactly.

Yes the car is a 2007 model. Will be having words tomorrow then to see if there are any issues which are related to them.

Cheers for the heads up matey and I'll print a copy of that statement off for reference if you don't mind?

Many thanks,

Luke

Quick up date, car is booked in on Friday for some warrant work so they said their going to have a look at it but I'm not getting my hopes up with them coming back with anything positive.
