loss of power and flashing engine check light

i was out a minute ago and was just over taking a truck on a duel carriage in 4th gear when i lost power and engine made a weird noise so i put it straight into 6th gear and the engine light started to flash a few times and then turned off, i pulled in checked everything looks alright, drove home then with no problems, i have no idea what caused it

Could be a malfunctioning coil pack but only a scan can set you straight as to the cause.
