Tyres Specifically R888's
« on: December 09, 2009, 10:22:29 am »
Not looking for a debate on which brand is best, i am hoping to order my R888's this week.  :pomppomp:

Wheel size is 17in 7.5j 45 ET.

What i would like to discuss is what is the best size and rating for this tyre with our GTI's

I am confused mostly with the ratings they are either R rated ZR rated medium GG and lots of other letters.

Its like i am lost in sesame street.

Get a 225/40/18. Most common size and therefore cheaper and easier to find.

235s in R888 are REALLY wide on a 7.5j, as they're more like 240+ - you may get a bit of strange sidewall flex.
Sideways yo!

....

Be prepared to hear sounds from the R888's which will make you think you're driving an army lorry! At least that's how it sounds inside Hurdy's car. Personally I love the sound but not all your passengers will if you use them on the road as well.

Oh, and you want a "92Y XL" - GG is the road legal compound tyre. Also known as List B.
Sideways yo!

Thats what i was after  :happy2:  also i was going to go for 225, but could i get away with 215 on 7.5j without compromising the handling as this would give me extra arch clearance obviously.  :happy2:

And maybe 17's not quite so baggy..... :booty:  :pomppomp:  :signLOL:

I've found a P-Zero Corsa and a Dunlop DZ02G for less and the same, respectively. PM'd who to call.
Sideways yo!

Tom got some P Zero Asymetrico's which have about 3mm left on them in 225/45/17 gathering dust, got some other perf tyres in the same size. Bought them for my Mk4 Santa's and never got fitting them.... Couple of beer vouchers gets them and they're localish (sort off)

You'll maybe only get a couple of track days out of them but they end in a vowel so they must be good!

I know you're looking for proper stuff but if you get stuck......

Same wheel as my 17" Team Dynamics TC :happy2:

The 225/45/17's fit easily under my arches and don't rub at all. Even at the 'ring I was rub free :chicken:

The TOYO R888's are GG (slightly harder wearing than the really soft GGG tyre)rated and also XL (extra load) rated, which is what you want for the GTI.

I wouldn't advise having these on in winter, as even TOYO say they are prone to cracking at sub zero conditions and need to be stored above 5oC.

Golf R gone.
