Title: CW MK6 Golf R (Australia)
Post by: stephen8512 on January 26, 2012, 01:43:30 pm
Hi guys.

My name is Stephen and I'm from Australia. Been a lurker on this forum for a while now and thought its best that I should introduce myself :)

I currently own a MK6 Golf R. Previous to this, I had a MK5 Jetta TFSI which got written off due to some idiot not thinking straight and turning when he shouldnlt, causing me to t-bone the car on the b pillar. anyway, I digress..

I know this isnt a MK5 so to speak but this forum has such a plethora of information regarding GTI's and TFSI's that hopefully I can contribute in any way shape or form. :)

Heres a summary of what my car has at the moment

Video of Garage door mod

Video of the Nanolex Glass sealant working on my windows. Notice how the water immediately "beads" and just rolls off. Ive never had to use my wipers since applying this.

Video of Defi Advance BF Boost gauge (2.0 bar)

Video of Hatch pop struts in action

Video of my Golf R and a friends MY11 WRX. Ever since the VWRacing intake has been fitted, the induction noise from the outside is loud, however its quiet in cabin, a lot quieter than when i had my Forge TWINTake on my old Jetta. It seems to have also developed a flutter!!! haha!

yep, I know TEFF. Haha his car is mental! Him and another guy here in Australia down in Melbourne have been doing pretty much the same mods, give or take a few bits here and there. Their cars are just on another level. Mine wont be as hardcore as I plan to just go bolt ons and to a stage 2+ equivalent. Aim is to have 200kw at all 4's as this car is my daily driver.

Performance for me is the least of my worries and will prob be one of the last things I do after I get suspension and wheels out of the way first.

Welcome stephen  :happy2:

Where did you get the CF mirror caps?

Hey Teff. Why am I not surprised to see u here? Haha. But rightly so...your car is on another level and the amount of work + dedication you have had on ur car ever since that accident which almost wrote off ur car is just unbelievable. It really did rise like a phoenix from the ashes so to speak :)

The mirror caps I got them from OSIR.

That's lovely.  :notworthy:

Nice mods and plans.  :happy2:

Thank you :)

Did you use the fabia struts, ecs ones or custom stuts?

Hi there. I used the struts that ECS sold. Im not sure about the longevity of these struts but theyre still working quite well and are still very strong so no gripe from me about them :) Really happy with it, and its such a useful little mod too. Just have to warn people that the boot will flick up automatically to be careful.

That is a VERY nice car, I wants it!!!!

Welcome or should I say G'day!!!

G'day :) You guys in the UK/Europe seem to dominate the VAG scene...the scene here is quite small compared to JDM meets. The euro scene here is still finding its feet so I hope to gather as much info from you guys as I can. :)

Thanks for your reply, is the boot very stiff to close?

it is a tad harder to close than the OEM struts And you do need to apply a little bit of downward force to "latch" the bootlid in place because if u dont do it properly it'll just fling up again. But having said that its not too hard to close.

Looks ace that does mate. Nice to see so much care has gone into the cosmetic mods as well as the performance ones, Tend to see people go one way or the other. Can I ask where you got the 42 Draft Design Oil Catch Can from please? How do you rate it?

Also, hell of a lot of modding on a car so new, you must be doing something right :signLOL:

Regarding the 42DD catchcan, I got it from www.carformance.com.au. The business is run by another VW enthusiast by the name of Greg (awesome guy). He brings in the 42DD products for us Aussies here and is based in Brisbane in Queensland.

Regarding the catch can, when driving it feels exactly the same when I didnt have one. Something like a catch can isn't anything which you can feel performance wise when u drive daily. But its doing its job it's meant to and thats all I care about really. From my understanding, fitting a catch can can reduce the amount of crankcase blowby oil that enters and contaminates the MAF sensor. More beneficial for track prepped cars. Is it really needed though for daily driving? Debateable for most peoples daily driving applications and the answer is probably NO, but it's good to have and personally I decided to get one as more of a preventative measure. The build quality and the finish of the catchcan itself though is superb. Only thing with the 42DD catch can is that the hose outlets from the PCV plate are quite large so you need a silicone hose which is about 19mm inner diameter (I/D) to make it fit. Unfortuntately, after looking at various places for proper silicone hoses in 19mm I/D, I couldnt find any so I settled for some hydraulic hoses, rated to 300psi from ENZED. This should theoretically last forever (or rather, outlast the car at least for the duration that I have it in my possession) and is a much better solution that normal heater hoses which isnt designed to cope with oil or what have you and can start to degrade away and may need replacing every 1-2 years or so.

Heres some pics regarding my catch can and the amount of crap it collected

bought 3 metres of PARKER 300PSI hydraulic hose from Enzed to replace the heater hoses with for the catch can.

The amount of crap the oil catch can had collected after 3000km odd worth of driving.

Getting the hoses over the PCV plate and onto the catch can is a pain in the arse. I soaked the ends of the hose in boiling water for about a minute, then sprayed a little bit of silicone spray on the inside of the hose to get it to slide in.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fc154%2Fstephen85122%2F55fe24a3.jpg&hash=3d48616b4efea9b6ceb435159f02921ee2b0b4ff)

Thanks mate. Yeah the Defi boost gauge is good...I actually wanted to take it apart and paint the needle blue to match the Golf R's dash needles but I realised that the LED light inside the gauge lights up RED so even if was to paint it blue, it'd look a bit sh*t...

HI mate. I got the caps from JCaps.

http://jcapsonline.com/

What are the wheels on the Scirocco?? Do you know the specs?? :)

Golf looks lovely.. :)

Yeah those wheels were my favourite on that scirocco, until he got his current set : BBS LM-R's

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7174%2F6514521689_d7e9734c48_b_d.jpg&hash=198cd50925f1202a7fcb7aee2d99829083cba351)

the previous wheels are Rays Volks Racing G12's 19x8.5 ET45. Even though its a JDM wheel, no wobbles required as they do make them in 5x112 PCD

I actually like them better on another mates R36 Passat. He is another wheel whore and he borrowed these wheels before my mate took it back and put it on his Scirocco.

Yep genuine BBS LMR's 5x112's. Limited editions. He paid some ridiculous price for them....close to 9K AUD I think, which works out to be roughly 6K pounds...

to order the push button, go to www.carstyle4you.com

then it's just a matter of using a soldering iron to solder the 2 bits of wire from the button onto your garage remote control chip board.

Will be looking at wheel + suspensions real soon. Already decided on the wheel. Just need to figure out size + offset and also the suspension too.

I've driven the car for about 100kms now and I must say, it's addictive! The effortless speed, the ease at which you can overtake, the noise of the TBE, I'm loving it!

I got dropped off at my mechanics (Arthur from Exoticars) yesterday morning to pick up the car and after giving me a quick run down as to the install, it seemed like a very smooth process. The only slight problem that he had run into was the Scorpion TBE and the slip joints which connect the exhaust pipes together. Fact is, they don't fit. They fit up to a point but after that, it just wouldn't slip on to connect the pipes. Plus, the supplied slip joints were thin and didn't seem very sturdy to me to begin with. Arthur told me that he had replaced those with something a bit more solid and showed what he had used instead and I was comfortable knowing that the TBE was secure using what he had used. Ideally, a flanged bolt on fitting or a V-band setup like what EuroJet uses would have been ideal but this is how Scorpion do their exhausts I guess. No big deal, but just FYI for anyone else wanting to go scorpion exhaust on their GTI/R's take note of this.

Anyway, so we talked about the install. GIAC Extreme tune loaded up fine with no issues. RS4 fuel rail valve with HPFP fuel pump installed with break in procedure completed with no issues. Cam follower also changed with a very minor wear on the follower which was good. I decided to change the follower anyway because you may as well since a new pump will be going. 3" custom intake pipe to fit my VWRacing intake done with no issues. Apparently VF engineering 3" intakes aren't being produced anymore and with the extreme tune, it needs to have a 3" intake pipe.

Ferodo Brake pads and goodridge brake lines installed but they were squealing like a bitch! They had been bed but even still they were so noisy. This was what I was afraid of regarding the brake compounds. I had wanted to also change the rotors with the whole brake setup but it wasn't to be this time around. Anyway, braking with medium/heavy braking force doesn't squeal obviously, it's only when the car is creeping or at very very low speeds and you apply the brakes that the squeal comes on. I'm wondering if change in rotors will help stop the squeal a bit but I guess it's more to do with the compound rather than the rotors. My rotors do need to be changed soon though so I may get some OEM rotors and get them slotted or go for a slotted equivalent. And if the brakes squeal gets annoying, I may look into the Carbotech 1521 pads I was wanting to get from the states. Either that or some Hawk HPS if I want to go local. I had also wanted to change the DV to the Forge DV but when I had dropped the car off at Exoticars last week, Arthur was expecting a shipment of Forge stuff to come through but I think it may have been delayed so it wasn't installed this time around. For those that want a quiet pad I dont think Ferodo DS2500 are for you as they will squeal in low speeds but the bite of the pads are excellent and coupled with the brake lines, they do bite a lot harder and stop better than OEM. It would fare well as a track day pad but the DS2500 is a pad which can also be used on the streets. I googled to see if there were any problems with squeal on the DS2500 but it seems to be a mixed bag. Some say yes there is squeal, some dont. Ferodo themselves say that it can squeal on certain vehicles and I guess the Golf R is just one of them.

We went for a quick drive around the block with Arthur at the wheel and it was a completely different beast. It pulled and just kept on going and going and going. Needless to say there was a massive smile on my face. I was actually very impressed at how quiet the scorpion TBE was when in D mode. I have the NON-RES version and it's not as loud as some people claim it to be. It sounds exactly the same as an OEM when in cabin i.e you cannot hear anything but the difference lies when you put it into S or manual mode because for those that have the Golf R, you will know that as soon as you put it in these mods, the revs jump up slightly to just over 1K rpm on idle. As soon as I did this in my car, the TBE was more pronounced in cabin compared to OEM.

I left Exoticars, said my thanks to Arthur and headed on home. Turning onto the highway I decide to give it some stick and I have to say, at wide open throttle I LOVE how it sounds! The exhaust sounds a bit different than a Miltek or equivalent as the Miltek seems to have slightly deeper noise. WIth the Scorpion, it has a more raspier tone when at WOT and it almost sounds like a VTEC. I went though some tunnels and gave it a bit and the noise just reverberated throughout the whole tunnel. I love it! its a raspy, vtec-like sound but not as high pitched. Compare a Capristo exhaust with a Kreissieg or Supersprint. Capristo is more sonorous whereas the Kreissieg/Supersprint is a little more raspy/raw. Gear change at WOT gives a nice DSG-pop sound. It's not like a farting DSG noise but rather just a little "pop" every time (only in S or manual mode obviously. In D mode, it's completely docile).
I came home and recorded a iPhone video of the exhaust. I had the bonnet open to see the engine movement. VWR engine mounts were also installed and though vibration has increased in the cabin ever so slightly, it's not spine shattering and it's definitely easy to live with on daily basis. It's probably only 5-10% more vibration than OEM. Nothing dramatic. There was definitely a lot less engine movement when under load though. I also decided to try and "bed" the brakes in again to rid the squeal. Procedure used was :

Drive to 60km/h and brake using light/medium braking force back down to 10kms/h. Do this 5 times
Drive to 80km/h and brake using heavy braking force back down to 10kms/h. Do this 4 times
Drive to 80km/h and braking using full heavy breaking force back down to 10km/h. Do this 3 times.

After this I let the car cool down a bit and left it in the garage as I was going out later that night. The tune is great. It's nicer to drive and in D mode it's still every bit as calm as you would expect. Flick your wrist down and put it in S or flick it across for manual mode however, its a completely different story. I drove around all day and all night basically yesterday and though I had a bit of a squirt every now and then, for most of the day I drove normally. Fuel consumption still reached 8.5L/100km and I've driven about 140kms from when I filled up yesterday at BP and the needle has only moved about 1/6th of the way towards E. I'm guessing that I will still be able to achieve my average of 520km/tank but with the car being amped up than what it was on before, for the first few fillups at least I doubt I'll get over 500kms on a tank as I'll be having too much fun! Haahaha! When at WOT from standstill, my boost gauge goes crazy now. It goes up to about 2.0 Bar boost in WOT from 1st but quickly drops and then eventually holds the boost steady at approximately 1.7BAR which is approximately 25psi.

Overall, I'm very happy that the car has reached this stage as the last time I accumulated parts like this, it was for my old Jetta and those that have been on here a while will know that the Jetta came to a sad end when it got written off, which subsequently meant I had to sell off all the parts I had collected. I'm glad that I actually made it this far with the Golf R and actually got to put on (almost) everything I had purchased. Hahaha. I'm looking forward to fitting the rest of the parts and seeing another transformation.

Next part regarding performance will be installation of

FMIC
Neuspeed discharge and charge pipes
KW V3 ultralows
Forge DV
OEM or slotted rotors

I'd like to say thanks to Arthur and and the team at Exoticars. Great people to deal with. I left my car there last week saturday and picked it up yesterday with no troubles at all. If anyone has dealt with Arthur they'll know that he's willing to go above and beyond and do what it takes to make you a happy and satisfied customer.

Hi Hurdy

nO i have yet to do any testing down the strip but 0-60 i think will be 5 seconds or perhaps even sub 5's...not really sure to be honest

Great R you have there too :)

Cheers,

You'll definitely be less than 5 seconds using launch control. Mine was low 4's with just a map  :happy2:

A DSG stage 2 map and a HPA race controller will get you into the 3's to 60.  :driver:

So decided to do a little DIY on a Sunday. Nothing major.

I had purchased the gloss piano black rear VW emblem for my bootlid and whilst I did like how it looked, I didnt like the fact that there was no contrast. Previously the chrome emblem would stand out with the black backing but now since the badge was black, it became impossible to see the VW badge from afar. It looked like there was a massive black hole in the middle of my bootlid.

Previously, I had some nice hard plastic CF inserts which went in between the badges but since I had changed the badge, I decided to make the inserts candy white and colour matched to the rest of the car.

First, I needed to get my paint. Since I wanted this to be colour matched, I needed the paint code of my Candy White, which is LB9A. I didn't want to get this "professionally painted" as it was such a small thing and not worth the trouble of going to a professional IMO.

Enter V&G Auto Paint. (http://"http://www.vgautopaints.com.au/") I heard about these guys through a friend who bought some paint from them for some touch up work. It came out brilliantly considering he was an amateur and the paint matched perfectly on his OEM gunmetal Evo 8 MR, which is difficult as the paint contains mettalic/pearl/flakes whatever you call it. These guys can colour match your car and get you a rattle can of any paint as long as you have the paint code. After a 15 minute wait and 35 bucks later, I got my candy white in a rattle can.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2012%2FF41CD001-E2A7-4221-AB4F-6CBF6E90C401-3314-0000051F5484A851.jpg&hash=9c272e5b41f80923206b9f94e7657aca954dd6ba)

I also bought some more inserts on ebay as my current CF ones were going to be ruined once I took them off. I found some which were pre-cut but they only came in silver. Didn't matter. I bought 2 just in case I stuffed one up. Here's a not-so-great picture of the pre-cut inserts. I was trying to show the silver...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2012%2FC9673886-AD6A-442E-8274-C8B704DB75B3-4970-0000089DD9C09E10.jpg&hash=1dbcc2239747efc0a1a68e22e69700d2e8f86c50)

So all that was needed now was to paint. Method I used was

1) Spray 2 coats of primer and let it rest overnight.

2) Sand using 800 grit sandpaper and then finally with 1500 grit

3) Spray 3 light coats of the candy white paint allowing a 10 minute break between each coat.

4) Spray 1 medium coat and allow it to dry/rest for 24-48 hours

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2012%2FDBA90C22-CA9F-4413-8A49-780D495FC16D-4970-0000089D51258AC6.jpg&hash=84bcfd5f1a4f7fb172641c8235eb7fb1f539c37b)

5) Spray 3-4 coats of clear with 1 medium coat and let it dry for 24-48 hours

6) Carefully cut around the inserts using a box cutter and remove the residual paint. It should just come off

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2012%2FDE3CEB52-42BE-48A8-8102-095BD3BF404C-4374-000006F9E8C48453.jpg&hash=3acb23a9e10fb3d02ab66ca8bbe1f4348493d517)

7) Clean the rear emblem and make sure that there is no residual dirt or anything where the inserts will be coming into contact with

8) Carefully apply the inserts and enjoy

Contrast is back and looks a lot better. Candy White is colour matched perfectly too which I'm very happy with and I think the end result came out quite well

+ hopefully getting this painted and colour matched. As much as I like CF, the wing doesnt work with the whole car if left as is IMO

gave the car a good clean + polish + TLC after 6 weeks of being too busy to do anything

Absolutly love how you have done this car and what you have done. Imo I wouldn't go any lower as I think cars look best when the wheel arch follows the edge of the tyre and none of the tyre sinks into the wheel arch and yours looks almost at that point now. But apart from that  :congrats:  :congrats:  :congrats:

Thanks everyone!

The rear wont go up any more. That is on its highest setting as I have the new KW V3 "Ultralows". The only way is down from there unfortunately. hahaha

But there is no scrubbing so thats good

Few more things to do....

Looking at getting wheels and BBK upgrade as my next major purchases

Very nice.

which insert stickers did you get?

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2012%2FDE3CEB52-42BE-48A8-8102-095BD3BF404C-4374-000006F9E8C48453.jpg&hash=3acb23a9e10fb3d02ab66ca8bbe1f4348493d517)

I want some that you stick on with the emblem detached so then when you put the VW bit back on you cant see the edge of the stickers (if that makes sense). Lots of the ones on ebay look like they just stick in the gaps without having to remove the VW bit.

Thanks.

Got my OSIR spoiler back from the panel shop. Greg at Baileys smash repair did a fantastic job. THe spoiler was initially CF and yes, it's a shame that the CF had to be painted but the CF didn't go with the look of the car IMO. Ideally I would have preferred the fibreglass option as I was already going to paint it. First world problems....

Anyway, it looks great. All I need to do now is to attach it

Pics of what it looked like before

Also got Greg to paint my OSIR dual gauge holder, which was also in CF, in gloss black. It didn't make sense to leave that in CF (again, yes its a shame CF was painted over) because it didnt go with the rest of my gloss black interior bits

it will be matching the rest of the trim now

Greg also removed the Audi rings and the TFSI lettering on my TT-S engine cover. Again, fantastic job all round!

Here's what it looked like before. Initially, I had the whole thing painted black, rings and letter included

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2Fcar_journal%2F8bacbe5f.jpg&hash=1f2033f905a11737de83d5dbb27d3928650c8689)

then I decided to DIY and get the rings and letters to stand out in white

now it's been filled with bog, smoothed and sanded back and repainted gloss black. Probably be looking at putting either the "R" logo, VWR logo or just keep it clean with nothing on it

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2012%2FIMAG0382.jpg&hash=58c23b4d833dd243e1203470a043bdbd42775b34)

Just some cosmetic enhancement updates for now...

Next major mods which I am looking at

- BBK's (most likely 6 pot brembos with slotted rotors, 355x32...depends if they clear my wheels though)
- Wheels (SSR Professor SP1 19" Black face, polished lip, bolts either in gold or coated in gloss candy white)
- Guards rolled and flared to accomodate
- DSG Tune (either GIAC or HGP/HPA)
- Haldex Gen 4 Controller
- CF rear valence (OSIR) and CF front lip (Garage Vary)
- Possibly changing to the Forge catch can instead...not 100% on this one yet (my current 42DD will be up for sale if it goes ahead)

Apart from that, quite happy with where the car is at the moment...maybe just some minor details here and there which needs to be tended to but overall I'm happy so far with its progress.

Haldex Gen 4 Controller would be top of my list - It will make a big difference to the handling (at least it did on the Mk5!).

Very impressed by your attention to detail and Greg's craftsmanship  :notworthy:

My OSIR vented carbonfibre bonnet is painted....  On the outside only, I couldn't bear to cover it all up!

Yeah I can understand you not painting the underside. I would have done the same. Since its the bonnet, no one will look underneath unless you open the bonnet anyway. And even then I think it will be more of a "wow" factor since everyone would think you have a normal bonnet when in fact when they see the CF weave they'll be all like  :jumping: :jumping:

So OSIR spoiler is now installed...just waiting on the sikaflex to set

Fitted this today in this god-awful heat

Just a word of warning to those wanting to buy this...fitment on the spoiler isnt the best from what I found

As this is a spoiler which is a stick-on type and not a full replacement, the ends of the spoiler tends to not be a perfect fit. From what I found, the ends of the OSIR spoiler "latches" on to your existing one but in doing so, the spoiler pushes up against the top section of your rear panel (where the spoiler meets the actual body of the car) and it tends to rub.

some install photos

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2012%2FC00B7E0C-9BC7-4E60-B46A-F90F3FC14CF1-7226-00000A102C203F48.jpg&hash=c8a192b3c09a9a8ccc8b4e034905154214b30cdf)

I lined up the spoiler with the OEM one and placed a wedge of masking tape between the spoiler and the body to prevent it from rubbing

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2012%2F06B3411C-3CB0-4C0B-AC55-5965F039E30F-7226-00000A109253C4FC.jpg&hash=b5999ed2ad4239e3e70de8cb60630a293699cec8)

some damage as a result of the rubbing. Lucky i have touch up paint to remedy this

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2012%2FC21B7BAC-5FE0-4AB6-B2DA-5066FD3E5898-7226-00000A104F5F8221.jpg&hash=819a5ca77fe979bbdeaf7f879db0df781e50fc6d)

lining up the sides of the OSIR spoiler to the OEM one to prevent it from rubbing also meant that the top bit of the spoiler wouldnt sit down nicely on top of the OEM spoiler and that it would be "afloat" almost? If I wanted it to sit down flat on top of the OEM spoiler, it would mean that the sides of the spoiler would rub, hence the masking tape treatment

We'll see how it turns out

Little tidbits which will be going on next year in Jan

Does it not need to sit on the oem spoiler for proper fitment. I know its only a golf but there must be a fair bit of down force on the spoiler at high speeds.  :happy2:

Nevermind you Ozzies and Kiwis. Someone appears to have put strange hatch\passenger ejector mechanisms on the rear of the car. What on earth are they for? Wind brakes?

pretty happy I dont have a lip right about now....seeing how low it is already

Front will be coming down a tad more, maybe 1cm or so to make it look right with the rear

AND SO FAR, NO SCRUBBING!!! Maybe its due to the OEM wheels? I know for sure if I were to put on any other wheel/tyre combo I will DEF need guards rolled and/or flared otherwise it will rub

35,000km service coming up. Shall be installing just a few more goodies. Nothing major.

Forge oil catch can
Forge DV-to-intake silicone hose (many thanks to Graeme from GNJ Motorsports)
Forge DV
Audi R8 coilpacks
NGK PFR7B Double Platinum spark plugs

Will be putting on 19" SSR SP1's soon along (when I buy them lol) with Brembo 6pot calipers (355x32 slotted rotors)

Maxitrol : I don't have a front lip at the moment but yeah, pretty glad it hasnt been scraping everywhere. I am able to get over 99% of all speedhumps and I don't have to approach it from the side just to clear it either so that's a positive I guess (or negative...depending on which way you look haha)

VRSalex : KW's all the way down? Hahaha the rears are on its highest setting already and look! If I wind it all the way down front and rear, it'll look like I have bags! hahaha

RedRobin : Thanks for the kind words mate!

I wish we have the RS3 in Australia as well......having been in a TT-RS I have to say the 2.5 TFSI engine sounds so damn good....somewhere in between a VR6 and the noise of the 2L TFSI

Title: Re: CW MK6 Golf R (Australia)
Post by: stephen8512 on January 22, 2013, 08:34:11 am
Yep...the TTRS is a damn nice ride from factory. That's not to say the Golf R isnt...

The TTRS is a bit lower to the ground and the cabin space i felt was a bit tighter for my height and weight (6"0, 90kgs).

Performance wise, it's actually quite similar to my Golf R but just not as loud. More linear power delivery but still enough to make you go  :jumping:  :jumpmove:

However the sound coming from the exhaust, even in factory form is much nicer than a stock Golf R exhaust.

Few more updates coming

35,000km service (using MOTUL Specific 504/507 engine oil + change filter + checking brake fluids + getting rid of squeals when braking)
NGK PFR7B double platinum spark plugs

OEM Audi R8 red coilpacks
OEM Audi R8 oil + coolant caps (already on the car)

Forge Oil Catch Can with windscreen wiper bottle replacement
Forge DV FMFSITVR recirc version with yellow spring

Dont see R's very often around me, infact cant think of any ive seen one locally, theres only 1 or 2 mk5 gti's down here. Ive got a mate in oz and he was suprised i purchased a gti because theyre so expensive over there (which im amazed at as we get raped tax wise) $20,000 (£13,300ish) for one with more mileage and less specced crazy money!

But yeah, yours is a beaut! I want an R as my next car  :happy2:

ive heard some conflicting info re: the Forge DV which is why im reluctant to put it on....it seems its a very hit and miss?

People say that the Rev D DV that the car comes with is best for the application unless I want to go big turbo or anything like that

thoughts?

Rev D is a piston design, won't fail but may leak.  Rev G, diaphragm design, holds boost better, but can tear over time.

Yeah, it sucks how that is isnt it? but then again it seems like people will take the failing of the Rev D to the tearing of the Rev G. I know a lot of pple who made the switch from G to D

Still think Evoms if you want to go aftermarket. :happy2:

I didnt even know EVOMS had a DV for the MK6 R. Any good? Better than Forge?

Got the car back from my mechanic. Missed driving the thing!

Got rid of the 42DD catch can and in place, Forge catch can! Along with OEM Audi R8 oil cap, coolant cap, and red coilpacks and NGK PFR7B double platinum spark plugs. 35,000km service done with oil + filter change and MOTUL Specific 504/507 engine oil.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2013%2FIMG_20130209_183714.jpg&hash=9c8de04827ad915c8cdbfab394f7deef82c29594)

Still need to re-install the audi TTS engine cover.

A bit annoyed though as when I got the car back, the Reverse Camera decided to be a pain in the ass and not work. The camera would still actuate and the image will still appear on the RNS510 unit but it seems the camera wont protrude all the way out?  This is all I see

Gave the car a full wash and detail today. Vacuum, Snowfoam, clay, 2 bucket wash, polish, wax, re-nanolexed the windows and wheels, leather treatment. Took forever but finally, feels good to have a clean car again. Still need to detail it more. Perhaps I'll get Pierre's assistance? Hahaha ;)

Only thing I need to do is replace the pollen filter and give the air vents a good spraying of Glen20 to kill any bacterial buildup from the A/C. Will do this in the next few weeks or so.

Also got the RVC issue sorted. I bought a replacement part quite cheap compared to retail (which I'm told costs something like $700.00 or something ridiculous from VW) and because I only needed the RVC camera and not the wiring that goes with it, I decided to give it a go myself and replace it.

Taking off the boot trim wasn't an issue as I had to do this before when I removed my rear wiper and put the wiper delete. The VW boot latch/RVC is held on by 3 T20 torx bolts. AFter you undo them, it's just simply a matter of twist to unlock and then pull out. Very easy. Since my RVC came from factory, I didn't have to mess about with wiring and it was a straight replacement, plug and play.

I decided to open up the old one to see what may have been causing the problem. It turns out that a plastic "latch" which is used to pop out the RVC had snapped off. The latch was hooked on to a metal piece which actuates and then protrudes the camera out, but being plastic, it's not unreasonable that it had snapped although I would have thought it would last longer than 2 years.

Here's a photo of the metal thing which actuates when put in Reverse

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2013%2F7AC716EA-1D0D-4AF3-9FF0-BB5D34FCF494-197-00000016167071CC.jpg&hash=32a2bd2e153362f919a5c4b63729608ab234619f)

and heres the photo of the plastic latch which had broken. Photo with the camera fully out

Design flaw? Hmm, possibly, but these things happen I guess. I suppose I was just one of the unlucky ones.... Anyway, it's fixed and it all works again so I'm happy

Hey mate.

It really depends which state you intend to live. For example, Sydney in NSW has pretty strict laws compared to, say, Perth in WA.

There has been an overall crackdown on modified cars in the past few years due to the media portraying modified car owners as being young, 19-20 something year olds on their P plates, hooning around doing burnouts in highly modified cars. There is even a law which prohibits P platers driving turbocharged cars and there is a restricted list of cars which P platers cannot drive. Funny thing is, a turbocharged car like, say, an Evo 9 is restricted but a car which is an N/A V6/V8 isnt restricted? Dumbasses in our government making stupid laws TBH...

But to be honest, if you don't drive around like a hoon, it's no different to any other country i'm assuming. The cars which usually gets pulled over are mainly JDM import cars, e.g your skylines, evos, STI's, etc mainly because these cars are popular with todays youth. A golf R/GTI on the other hand is quite subtle and though it may not be a track weapon or anything of the sort out of the box, you can still tinker with it and mod it without having the stress of having to look over your shoulder every time you go for a drive and worrying about getting a defect.

Here are some photos which were taken about 2 weeks ago on the friday of the long weekend.

A friend of mine (RJ) was selling his Evo X and in the past we have hinted at the possibility of a photoshoot together. However, we were both busy at the time and it never eventuated.

Since he was selling his car, we decided to finally get a photoshoot in of both our cars. Ron is RJ's brother and he owns a 3 door MK6 GTI and came along too.

Funnily enough, all 3 cars were white.

Anyway, here they are. Credit for the photography goes to Joseph Hui (J_HUI)

also ordered this : Garage Vary Reife front lip for the Golf R

Garage Vary is a well known JDM brand with the JDM community. I wasn't happy with the lip offerings like Kerscher or Revozsport because I think they dont look all that nice personally. This is what i was looking for. Nice, simple and clean.

Garage Vary Lip installed! (finally...)

Being so busy at work, really didn't have much time to install this over the past few weeks. Finally got around to it!

As is so often the case with well made JDM parts, there is perfect fitment... and this lip was no different.

I wasn't a fan of the lips that were on offer mainstream (e.g OSIR, kerscher, etc) so I decided to see what the JDM market has to offer. Tendy actually told me about how Garage Vary has parts offerings for the VW Golf R and Scirocco R platforms. After seeing his car, I bit the bullet.

Although the instructions were in Japanese, it's very simple to work out. The front lip has 5 holes and 5 screws which require you to screw the lip to the underside of the bumper to hold it in place. It also came with a very thin strip of double stick tape stuck towards the back of the lip where it's meant to hold the lip in place while you screw in the supplied screws through the 5 holes, but I decided this wasn't enough so I used some strong 3M double stick tape from Bunnings to hold it in place.

The lip fits the curvature of the middle part of the Golf R bumper very nicely. The lip did not need any bending or anything of the sort. It was just a matter of measure, peel, stick, screw, and done. Whole thing took roughly 30 minutes to install.

Unlike the Kerscher/EZ lip, this lip doesnt reduce the distance from the floor to the bumper as it's designed to fit in the middle part of the Golf R bumper where it slightly elevates. Not only that, it now compliments the OSIR Carbon Fibre mirror covers.

Enough rambling....here's the only decent photo I could get with my phone. Thanks again goes to Morph for giving me the contact who sent this over from Japan

Also a small cosmetic update. Bought this badge with white inners from Bold Sport. However, not 100% happy. Reason being is because they do not use the OEM badge housing to hold the VW badge in place of the grille. The housing is a chinese copy. Having said that, it stays on but it doesn't "click" on as well as my OEM one. And, because the housing itself is the bit which was painted white, even if I was to change it to the OEM, it'll be useless.

I might do a DIY and just spray paint an OEM housing myself. I still have a can of Candy White paint left. But to be honest, I dont think I like the look of it....maybe it'll have to grow on me. For now, I left it. Might run it for a week.....at this stage though, I like the black better.

Alright so next on the list : necessities/maintenance

- new tyres (looking at Michelin Pilot Sport 3 or Goodyear Assym2's) 235/35/19 for the OEM talledagas

- new rotors (OEM rotors are shot. Need a good OEM or OEM-like slotted option)

- new brake pads (looking at Remsas due to low dust and OEM feel)

Things left to do :
- BBK (Brembo 6 pot or Porsche 996TT 4pot)
- Wheels
- Installing DEFI Oil pressure + EGT gauges
- Installing HALDEX Gen 4
- Installing Okuyama Carbing under bracing
- Spoon Rigid Collars

Not long now till it's "complete" but big ticket items like wheels and brakes will make my wallet take a massive hit. Then who knows? Bigger turbo? Where does it stop? lol

I've decided for the time being to get some plain rotors but made by Fremax. And the pads I'm going to go with the Remsas and swap out the hawk ceramics.

Rationale is that I can go slotted 2pc floating rotor if/when I go the 6 pot BBKs. Till then, no need to spend much more on slotted options now. The current rotors are the same rotors from when I took delivery and have worn down.

Speaking of wearing down, I need new tyres. Now that the brakes have been sorted, have to tend to the other essential replacement and that is tyres. They've lasted 45000 from the showroom floor and quite impressed.

Aren't they available in Australia?

Hey mate

Im thinking of getting Michelin Pilot Super Sports actually. But tyres here in Australia are so damn expensive that most of us get them over the internet and have it delivered. Much cheaper

Front and rear rotors (OEM size. 345x30 front, 312x22 rear) and Remsa brake pads arrived along with some Penrite DOT 4 brake fluid.

Didnt want to opt for slotted rotors such as stoptechs or DBA's as I'll most likely be going 2pc slotted rotors anyway when i get my BBKs so these will do for now. Rotors are pretty much shot and are squealing more than a japanese porn video

Will be installing these soon but also going to have a chat with John from VSPORT to see how much slotting these rotors will cost. If its too expensive then i'll scrap the idea.

EGT and Oil Pressure gauge to be installed as well

Rotors and Pads installed. No more squeals, no more tears! Love the new pads. Very minimal brake dust, same OEM bite and now with the rotors, the R is stopping very well!

Went to a dyno day at Port Hacking Automotive on their mainline dyno. Great day out and was a chance to meet some new people and get the car on the rollers to see how much power its now putting out now that I've done pretty much all I can do bolt-on wise without having the need to change internals or get a bigger turbo etc.

In the end, pretty happy with the results and as it stands, plenty enough power for me as a daily.

AFR is missing as it didnt print out for whatever reason, however it remained steady at 11, so pretty content with that.

Hey mate! Yeah no worries more than happy to submit my photos to the calendar. I think I submitted a photo for the 2013 calendar too but I never ended up getting one!

Can someone tell me if my Golf R made the cut? And if so, could you please post it here? I would like to see  :signLOL:

Thanks very much mate! You guys have it good...the VW/euro scene over there is just SO much more than what it is here. I'd be happy if we had even 1/10 of the calibre of cars from this forum over here down under.

....Yes your car was the month of May - A photo by Rex Abergas.

I'll bring it to Neil's (scopes) attention as he was responsible for despatching.

I'll have to dig out the artwork etc before I can post the image here.

next (and last bit of mods) to get installed hopefully within 3-6 months. Then hopefully I'll be well and truly finished. (HOPEFULLY!)

- Get new tyres ASAP : Was looking at Michelin Pilot Super Sports, but have heard they are quite a soft compound and will wear quite quick? Might look at the Dunlop Sport Maxx GT's again or Goodyear Assymetric 2's.

- Get a DSG Tune : After a spirited drive this weekend, I think this will compliment the car greatly. It doesnt feel too bad right now as in it's not sluggish or anything of the sort, however, with the DSG tune it'll give it that little bit extra I believe to make it really fun.

- Install my Haldex Gen 4 : Have been sitting around in my house for a while now, and haven't yet installed. Perhaps at next service

- Install Tyrol Sport Rigid Collars : From the group buy. Will probably install this along with the Haldex.

- Install Defi Advance EGT Gauge + Oil Pressure Gauge with the OSIR centre dual pods (gloss black) : Was thinking of the P3 gauge to be honest, however I like the look of the gauges. Oil Temp and Water temp are all on the dash anyways (although might not always be 100% accurate, but at least its there).

- BBK Upgrade : Lots of options out there. Looking at the Brembo 6 pistons with 2 piece slotted rotors. Why Brembo? Personal preference. I like the look of them. It should not affect the brake master cylinder, however will be researching this a bit more. Looking to reduce unsprung weight too with the 2 piece rotors. Some may say overkill for the street, but hey, the car as it stands right now for the streets is probably overkill already.

- Wheels : Yes, yes, lots of people have been asking me when I'm going to get the wheels. I think I may be one of the last Golf R's which has essentially all the bolt on engine mods done, yet still keeping with the stock 19" Talladegas. SSR Professor SP1's 3 piece wheels with some dish, gloss black centres and gold bolts is where my heart is currently, but will also be looking at offerings from BBS, HRE or DPE's if there's anything that I like (which at the moment, there isn't).

Those are the big ticket items left. Everything else is either cosmetic or quite small. Also, I've been thinking a lot of a badgeless front grille with notched bonnet. I think it looks quite clean...but if i want this, I want to notch the bonnet completely by welding it on etc and I dont think I love it THAT much currently to make that commitment .... but again, it does look quite clean and is slowly growing on me and im warming to the idea...

So gave the car a well earned wash after something like 8 weeks? Due to the rain and me being busy and not having time to drive it as much as I wanted, it was good to finally give the car a scrub

Snowfoam pre wash + 2 bucket + claybar + quarterly interior leather treatment + half yearly nanolex wheel sealant application

Heres a photo of it after it's had its 2 bucket wash

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2013%2FIMG_20131207_191159.jpg&hash=1d4f50cc2d35466fa356227e207409552cdac259)

I also decided to do a little DIY. The Chrome "R" Badge on my grille always looked a tad out of place now that I have got rid of the chrome VW Badge front and rear as well as debadging the rear "R" logo too. So I decided to paint it candy white with the leftover can of Candy White spraypaint I had from VG autopaints a while ago. These guys can take any colour you have and give you a rattle can colour matched perfectly to your car.

I was going to keep the background of it black, but there is a very thin chrome border around the background square, which I was also wanting to paint. It required a little bit of patience masking up but in the end it got done.

Masked up :

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2013%2FIMG_20131208_013918.jpg&hash=0cdb6a1441e745832502fe25986f88df36f4b027)

I sanded it down as much as I could as I needed to have the primer stick to it otherwise it would peel off overtime.

about 2x thin layers of primer and then I sanded off with 600 and 1500 grit sandpaper. Then, another 3x thin layers of candy white paint.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2013%2FIMG_20131208_025853.jpg&hash=ba4ce0c0418e2fb9dd72c70f223c7463e31685c9)

Result (apologies for the out of focus picture. Phone died) :

So it's been just over 3 years since I've had this car and its come a long way since then. Drove away from the dealerships on my actual birthday (December 1) back in 2010. Heres what the odo read on the 1st December 2013.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fgg506%2Frealityfromwords%2FIMG_20131208_204700.jpg&hash=862b3fbe255b3a710bec42045314bb510a170310)

15,000kms per year...which I think is about average?

Most likely be doing a lot less kms than that though in 2014...

I think attention to details is what makes or brakes a car and you are very careful with all the details. So job well done!  :congrats:

For the brakes you might consider some APRacing ones (very very good and cheaper than Brembo)
And for wheels I would consider the BBS range, especially the RS-GT ones which I think look great on a VW Golf (a bit expensive though)!

Michelin Pilot Super Sport is not overall a soft compound, only the outer part app. 15% is a soft compound. The rest is treadwear 300, so soft it aint ;)

thanks for the kind words rex :)

I have also considered APRacings but here in Australia, the Brembos and APRacings arent too different in terms of price. I think they may be a $100 difference between the two?

I was actually thinking the BBS LM-R's but they are ridiculously expensive!~

Ah really? Nice! I'll keep that in mind for next time! Already ordered the Goodyear Assym 2's so when these wear off I'll try the michelins ;)

Fresh rubber after 50,000kms on the same tyres that came from factory.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2014%2FIMG_20140301_143130.jpg&hash=108ae5a91d8bb1948b617a0ee40d5862737d39b2)

New rubber is same brand/spec as the old ones, i.e Dunlop Sportmaxx GT's. 235/35/19. Never had a problem, and although I wanted to go Michelin Pilot SS's or Goodyear Assymetric 2's, these were in stock and theyre a pretty good tyre.

So lot of people have PM'ed me about specs. These wheels are 19x9, with +37 offset and a PCD of 112, not the traditional 114.3 you find on most JDM wheels as that is the PCD for most if not all jap cars. It's actually a good fitment for a Scirocco R, so when I do sell, potential there for scirocco owners :)

As the PCD is suited for our cars, this means no wobble bolts or PCD adaptors. This was pretty important to me personally. As much as I know that wobbles work and are actually quite safe, if you have the choice to get the wheels in the correct PCD, why not? Also, PCD adaptors are good but the thinnest adaptors I could find were the ones from Adaptec which are 15mm...so essentially it'd be like putting on a 15mm spacer on the car, which would effectively make the car's offset a +22. Again, with this final offset figure, it would work for Evo 8's and STI's, but not the Golfs.

Since the wheels are a tad aggressive for our cars, kerscher wider guards will be ordered, which will give me about 20mm at the fronts to clear and not rub (hopefully), and for the rear, I plan to get Peter at Bodyform to look at maybe flaring them out a bit with a little bit of camber, but nothing too crazy.

Final aim is to get a nice, fat, squat look from the back without going crazy camber whilst still being able to perform daily duties. Tyres will be slightly stretched on 235's. This shouldn't be detrimental and isn't crazy stretch either.

Okuyama/Carbing chassis bracing will replace my current UniBrace UB along with KW Clubsport coilovers which will enable front camber adjustment easily as they come with camber top plates. I have camber top plates ready to be installed  on the V3 ultralows (as they are compatible) but I've decided that the ultralows might not work with these wheels. If i had gone with a 19x8.5 +45 like everyone else, then I could easily keep these coilovers and it would be happy days. But, for wheels like SSR Professors, an 8.5 width with a weak offset like that simply would not do. Professors are meant to have a bit of a step lip....and the size/spec I went for isn't overly aggressive so I think it should be okay to pull off. It just requires a bit more work.

Now to find the time to do all this. 2014 is already proving to be a busy year!

There hasn't been much activity with my car over the last few months, mainly because I've been busy with other things as well as there isn't much left to do on the car now so I've just been enjoying it.

Few things which will be done in the next few months, which is mainly maintenance rather than new mods

- 60K major service + cam follower change + volant air filter clean/change + rotate wheels
- Replace windscreen wipers with new Bosch items
- Need to fix creaking noise when car goes over speedhumps. I have a feeling its the SuperPro ALK bushings...
- Going to spend a full day or two detailing the car both inside and out.
- Few little cosmetic detail changes to come
- Need to buy 72.2 to 57.1 hubrings. Preferably aluminium and not plastic. (Still looking)
- New OEM bonnet to be put on order
- DSG Tune

I also may have an opportunity to purchase a Golf R cluster with colour MFD. Probably one of the more exciting things that may be happening. However, still not 100% sure how it will work or whether indeed it'll actually work with my car. Im sure it will but it will require VAGCOM or something similar I'm guessing...will keep you all posted :)

So small update. Haven't had time to do much to the car mod wise, so I've been collecting parts again...

1) Major 60K service completed at 53K kms as the car was approaching 1 year since last major 45K service (which was subsequently done around 38K kms). Thanks to Jack at BLA for getting all this done. Will need to drop car back off there to tend to a knocking noise which Jack believes is the subframe and the rigid collars but all in all, car feels good.

2) Car got into a little accident a few weeks back. Three lane road (Pennant Hills Rd), I was on the right most lane. 4WD towing a caravan was in the middle lane. My car was situated between the 4WD and the caravan when suddenly, the guy starts merging into my lane without any indication. I honk my horn thinking he will stop but he kept coming. Slam the brakes and luckily, the rear driver side of his caravan scraped the passenger side quarter panel of my car only. It also damaged my OSIR mirror covers and the actual mirror unit, but aside from that, it was all cosmetic as it just scraped it. Suspension and the integrity of everything was intact, which was a relief. Immediately took it to Axel at VCDC and within a week, it was all fixed. Covered through the other guys insurance. New panel, new mirror unit and new OSIR CF covers. Wheels were also scraped and this was also fixed.

It sounds worse than what it really was. Guy was an older bloke, apologised, swapped details, went through insurance, hassle free. Now, the car is back in my garage and booked in with Dave at Reflect Effect to get the quarter panel and mirror covers re-opticoated. Axel did a fantastic job as always. The panel has been properly colour matched, wheels have been repaired and freshened up and the end result is flawless. Cannot thank him enough.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2014%2FIMG_20140712_133053_1.jpg&hash=d8873179f2dea06a091c7737dc60845b9555a38a)

3) Colour MFD sale fell through from the guy in the UK. Won't be getting my hands on it unfortunately. Still on the lookout for one though...

4) Bought some new replacement wipers. Bosch Aerotwin A980S. Very good wipers with streak free finish. Feels brand new again.

Purchased them from here : http://au.bosch-automotive-shop.com/en/products/details/-/productdetails/3397118980 (http://au.bosch-automotive-shop.com/en/products/details/-/productdetails/3397118980)

For those that want the VW OEM wipers (which I believe is the same brand but more expensive due to it being labelled a VW OEM Part), then the VW Part code is 1Q2998002. Should fit MK5 Golfs as well as MK6.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2014%2FIMG_20140731_123203.jpg&hash=a026f57a3a6622adc0b1301b95c6d64693e075e9)

5) SSR SP1 centre caps purchased. These are the "B-Type Low" caps. There are also the "B-Type Super Low" and "B-Type High". Difference between the caps is basically the "thickness", or how much the cap protrudes out from the centre. The ones I got are 22.71mm thick and should tie in nicely with the wheels (when I finally put them on).

Also, I'm thinking of getting a custom "R" logo made up in place of the SSR logo...but we'll see how that goes.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2014%2FSSRSP1.jpg&hash=1b6c3e5f53bca27b4bd01f48c5ff74653c7ed933)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2014%2FSSRSP12.jpg&hash=fa0f19c4f805d226d0848be2c22747ac15784231)

72.2 to 57.1 aluminium hubrings also ordered from SSR Japan.

6) Decided to remove "R" logo badge from the front grille and instead, fit the white insert for the front VW badge. I previously had this badge when I purchased it from Bold-Sport (as can be seen by my previous post here (http://"http://www.vwgolf.net.au/showthread.php?2989-stephen8512-s-Candy-White-Golf-R&p=362377&viewfull=1#post362377")), but at the time I didn't like it for two reasons. One, I felt it didn't look good with the white housing and chrome "R" logo and two, the actual housing from Bold Sport was a chinese copy, not a VW OEM item so it wouldn't "click" into the grille as nicely as the OEM one did.

I had a spare housing lying around (VW Part code : 5K0 853 601 F) so I got Axel to spray the housing in candy white while he was repairing my car and have now removed the "R" logo from the grille. Only thing is, by removing the R logo, it has left these two holes where the logo used to be, but they are barely noticeable. I might do a DIY later on and dremel it off, or just substitute my grille for a TSI grille which is essentially the same thing without the holes.

Now that the R logo is no longer there, it looks better with the white housing. Still a bit iffy with the look of it to be honest, but thats what I said initially about having a black VW badge instead of a chrome one, and I came around to it in the end. We shall see what happens...

(old photo but looks like this without the R logo now)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2013%2FIMG_20130930_202131.jpg&hash=72d62fb80b403ab5e931dc1ea04e270a2c3fc10c)

7) 3D Design carbon vents ordered through Budi at Autotechnik. These are the same as the vents on Justin's MK5 R32. Originally designed for the 1 series BMW, the bonnet will be cut and made to fit these vents. Also, it will be a new VW OEM bonnet that the vents will be used on.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2014%2Fgolf2-1.jpg&hash=5c6cc1ab3e9e7cbb7266840ae19a9c282cd7c058)

Only dilemma I have at the moment is whether to keep the vents carbon, or to get them painted in Gloss black? I had thought of wrapping them in gloss black vinyl but not sure how the vinyl will hold up overtime with heat emanating from the bonnet. Once I get these in my hands, then will make a decision. For now though, I'll most likely keep them CF as it will tie in with the CF Garage Vary front lip and the CF OSIR mirror covers.

8) Focal IFVW Speaker kit purchased. Will be looking at upgrading the rear door speakers too as well as Dynamat. Most likely be going to Marty @ FHRX to do the install.

Not my photo but you get the idea...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg255.imageshack.us%2Fimg255%2F7384%2Ffocalkit.jpg&hash=fcaa2caf794a9074b5c61ec2211587c276e7626a)

Last few things to purchase :

- OEM VW Bonnet (Aug-Sep)
- 355x32 Brembo 6 pot calipers with slotted front and rear rotors (Oct-Nov)
- Custom mould interior CF trim (Nov-Dec)
- Kerscher wider front guards (Nov-Dec)

Then, finally, I'll be done.... maybe bigger turbo or something later on but not for a very long while...a maxed out K04 making some 220kw at all 4 wheels I believe is plenty enough for a daily driver.

Picked up the 3D Design twin vents for the bonnet from Autotechnik today. Many thanks to Budi for sourcing these and bringing them in.

I wish I took a photo of the box it came in. For a pair of vents, they were contained inside a box which was as big as the box my Scorpion TBE came in, with the inside of the box having a plethora of bubble wrap. No chance of the vents getting damaged with all that wrap/box.

I have to say, it really is a very nice bit of kit. I said that I would consider painting these Gloss piano black, but the CF is just so nice and I don't think I can do it. In any case, when these are installed, the front should tie in nicely with the front Garage Vary CF lip and the OSIR CF mirrors.

They come factory with this silver mesh at the opening of the vents. From memory, Jose had left his off completely on his old R32. I don't mind them to be honest, but I will ask Jack at BLA to get some black Porsche mesh to replace these (if I decide to keep them).

The 3D Design vents also come with these rain/water catchment trays. Once the vents are installed, I'm guessing the idea is you can pop the bonnet and screw these in for when there's rain pouring down so that water doesn't get into the engine bay. Only thing is, it may not have clearance in the engine bay when I try and shut the bonnet with them on...but we'll get to that hurdle when the vents are installed on the bonnet...let's get that done first...

Anyway, enough blab. Here are some photos

CF weave so nice...

The SSR Wheel caps I ordered for my Professor SP1's finally arrived. There were so many variations of these wheel caps. I opted for the "low" caps (i.e they don't protrude out as much when installed)

Also bought these. OSIR aluminium carpet locks. Just a little minor detail thing which should tie nicely with the JCAPS aluminium billet wheel cover for my Recaros.

Regarding the Kerscher Front fenders, i have them on my mk 5 gti and they are 30mm wider than stock on the mk 5. Are you sure they are only 20mm wider for the mk 6?

Jake, as far as I know they are 25mm wider on the Mk5 Golf.

About the bonnet vents... If that's a style look you are after, it is a great mod.
BUT if you want better cooling of the engine, it's not... For the vents to be affective you need to place them as far away from the windscreen as possible. I've done some reading and if the vets are where you put them, you will only have a better cooling when stationary. Otherwise, in that place, there is a lot of pressure when the car is moving and air can't escape. For better cooling you need something like this (or just mount the vents lower):

Hey rex. Thanks for your input :)

Yeah these vents wont be as functional as the one you posted up and the mock-up photo was just that : a mock up just to get an idea of how it'd look. :)

I will probbaly mount these lower than whats shown in the pic but it's going to be both aesthetic as well as functional, but again, not as functional as that other bonnet on the MK5. I just really liked the look and aggressiveness of these vents and thought it'd flow with the MK6's lines nicely :happy2:

So when I (finally) got the wheels put on, there was one little thing I forgot to think about and that was the lug bolts. I was told that the SSR Professors needed V-taper (conical) lug bolts whereas the OEM VW/Audi's are Ball seat. I could use them for the time being but it meant that though the OEM lug bolts were keeping the wheels on the hub, it wasn't secure as they were ball seat lug bolts.

So I decided to get some McGard Wheel bolts (Thanks again to Nat AKA dev17a). The McGard bolts are 28mm shank length, slightly longer than the OEM 26mm, and I opted for the black plated heads. They come in either Chrome or Black.

McGard Wheel bolts with Black plated heads.

Initially planned to upgrade just the tweeters with the Focal units and upgrade the 6.5" speakers front and rear to some similar Focal units or Boston Acoustics. Might even go as far as Dynamatting the whole car and changing the headunit to a larger screen Alpine touchscreen unit with Nav, but we'll see.

I'm not a big audiophile and just a nice simple speaker + tweeter upgrade would suffice for me. Dont need a big doof doof in the back. Might do a DIY install on the speakers myself. Taking apart the door cards and installing the focal tweeters doesnt sound all that difficult, plus theres a YouTube step by step guide already so most of the work is already done for me!

Finally fitted the MK7 Climatronic unit. With my trim pieces being painted in Gloss Black, I had to get the trim surround of the MK7 climatronic unit painted as well to match. Greg at Baileys Smash opposite Exoticars got it done for me.

Install was very easy. Remove the trim, remove old climatronic unit, install new one, check to see if it all works, put the trims back in place, done!

Recently made a trip to Heasmans Steering to get my coilover and camber sorted. I wanted the rear raised a touch and the camber to be even on all sides (the left had more camber dialled in than the right for whatever reason). The left rear was a touch lower than the other side and every time there was a big dip in the road, the wheel would scrub on the passenger side only.

Doug measured up the coilovers and firstly made sure that all 4 corners were set at the same height. Then, he dialled in around -3 camber for the rear and -1.5 at the front. Now, no more scrub issues!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0448.jpg&hash=60ac87c25f02574835c2c47d6af18267f41a677a)

This sweet R35 GTR was getting some suspension work done too...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0444.jpg&hash=3d0bb4d08118fdeb4ef17bf0c95370edb6594ffe)

Heasmans always seems to have nice cars such as this Camaro and a Shelby Cobra putting out 1000hp! You can also see peeking out a Fiat Abarth 695 SS peeking out from the side

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0443.jpg&hash=23c8f4c91ace23a62949aa6ee4489e7225f20a17)

With the suspension finally being sorted and no scrubs (haha TLC >D), decided to give the car a wash. I was running low on car shampoo and other car wash products so I recently went a bit nuts and bought a bunch of products by DodoJuice from CarCareProducts.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0437.jpg&hash=ce06a206b4e9343acdbf9f1a6d4540c2107f7dcd)

Gave the car a wash using the DodoJuice "Born to be Mild" shampoo. I used to use Duragloss before this but I found this to be just as good. Very strong concentrate.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0467.jpg&hash=3e224dedd4ec8dee90267c3d4a4e05160e693779)

Also used the DodoJuice "Ferrous Dueller" and sprayed it on the wheels. This is meant to lift of any iron or brake dust deposits and it will turn purple after about five minutes of spraying as it dissolves the iron fallout/brake dust. It was really quick and easy. Just spray, wait 5-10 minutes for it to do its thing and then rinse off.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0468.jpg&hash=3200d929b8e5a33709612f676f83d0b5671802b6)

After drying the car, I applied the DodoJuice "Red Mist" detailer, which is a synthetic spray sealant meant to give existing wax layers an extra layer of protection as well as improving the water beading characteristics. Also used the DodoJuice "Clearly Menthol" glass cleaner a go. Streak free and smells quite nice. Very impressed with the DodoJuice range.

Finally, added a small detail to the car which I think looks great

Few new additions coming to the car :

1) Will be ditching my trusty DEFI gauge in place of this P3 vent gauge with blue/white dials from the group buy (thanks Frazza)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn1.bigcommerce.com%2Fn-63unu%2Fy5gl6%2Fproducts%2F350%2Fimages%2F786%2Fmk6_1b__47517.1411345946.1000.1200.jpg%3Fc%3D2&hash=d2f84b8a3ccdf6a2a1f584e6a4bd04f397ea1717)

2) OZ Futura 18" wheels. Going to rebuild these. Overall very good condition with little to no blemishes on the face of the wheel however it will require a respray. Planning on keeping these as OEM as possible so will prob respray in silver. One barrel has a very very tiny crack on the edge of the barrel (about 0.5cm) but easily fixed, and the lips are worn so they will be replaced with some brand new polished lips. Some TLC and care will be needed to bring these wheels back to life. Current specs are 18x8 +35 and 18x9 +45, but after rebuilding, final specs will be 18x8.5 +40 all round, which should theoretically sit quite flush and still be functional for daily driving purposes.

Pic for reference. Should look like this when completed :

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpic2.fotki.lv%2Fphotos2%2F9%2FW0003603%2F000360225%2F000036022448_%2523_3_%2523_El_Camino.jpg&hash=8b1a7b8be7411189fcb9488f83328a50b1359aa1)

3) Still looking for some BBK's, namely TTRS/RS3 brakes. Haven't had the chance to measure up other brands such as AP/Alcon/Brembos but I'm in no rush...

So got this today from BKS Tuning.

Going to DIY doing the reverse light on the driver side so that I can have dual reverse lights and get rid of the useless rear fog. Going to replace the bulbs with B1 Hybrid white bulbs instead of Bold Sport LED.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0515.jpg&hash=8cb73f3fc7c2f0ac3e1f19f07d8a44416d2326bb)

I currently have my reverse bulb installed with one of these and it's been great and no chance of bulb out error on the dash unless it actually dies on me.

Saturday shenanigans with Bima. Decided to swap wheels for fun. His White BBS LM 18x9 +35 and my Black SSR Professor SP1 19x9 +37 on his GTI. I have to say, I have never seen a static MK6 GTI look that good with my wheels. Stance was on point for his. For mine, if I were to rock the LM's, need to lower it a bit more...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2F1.jpg&hash=0bee73dd3cc094031a6db21003558c9b4579e5ab)

TO be honest, I think the SSR SP1's looked epic on his GTI more than it does on my R, and vice versa...the LM's looked much better on my R than it does on his GTI IMO... Wheel swap perhaps? Going to wait till I get the OZ Futuras rebuilt, then we'll see. Might look at trying to find a set of LM's and rebuilding them to make a square set of 18x9's...

Got around to doing the dual reverse light mod. Ever since i saw it on Lucas_R's build thread here when he had a Golf R, it's something I've always wanted to do.

I decided to DIY this but I had never done any soldering before and I'm pretty crap when it comes to wires and electrics. Big, big thanks to Lucas (Lucas_R) and Jeff (In Black) for answering all of my newbie queries and providing help and assistance as well as photos as a guide on how I should tackle this.

In hindsight, it's not a very difficult DIY mod and a seasoned expert/professional could probably do it in about 30 minutes. I decided to take as much time as I needed, making sure I dont miss anything.

I tried to take some photos as I went along but my phone battery died on me so couldnt get many pics, but here we go.

You will need:
- Driver side inner tail light with reverse bulb (you can buy the inner from BKS-tuning)
- Soldering iron with solder (I got mine from Jaycar)
- Wire stripper and a small blade/craft knife (Wire stripper available from Jaycar and blade/craft knife available from Bunnings)
- Two-core power cable about 2 metres (I also got this from Jaycar. 7.5A rated)
- Replacement reverse bulbs (They are a W16W bulb and you can either get LED's from Bold-Sport or if you want to keep it Halogen but still have white light, I opted for B1 Hybrid, made in Japan)

1) The very first thing I did was watch this video as I was a complete newbie to all this and had no clue what to do. This was great.

2) Remove the driver side inner by popping out the plastic cover from the boot and un-screw the two nuts holding the housing onto the bootlid. Also, remove the bootlid trim. This will require some force to do as you will pull on it and it will feel as though it will break or snap but gently keep applying more and more force until it pops out. Doing this will allow you to hide the wire underneat and zip-tie it all together to give it a neat finish later on.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0583.jpg&hash=79efec0db7ab9d6fb524bd9ff515a4167102e046)

3) There is a plastic latch on the sides holding the tail light housing on to the bootlid. To get this off, simply pull down with some gentle force. It should just pop out. Be careful not to break any tabs.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0581.jpg&hash=acde2ecb97a857bdc28870a782aa891caf3c4d21)

4) Once you remove the housing, the back of the tail light should look like this. We will be splicing into the yellow cable and the thicker of the two brown cables :

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0553.jpg&hash=16881500b17e730503795396f1fd2bfda25e2cff)

5) Take the ends of your 2 core power cable, get your wire stripper and get rid of the coating to expose the wires underneath.

6) With your craft knife/blade, carefully pierce the plastic cover to expose the wires underneath. Be careful not to damage too many of the wires underneath. Do this for both yellow and thick brown cable, and for both inner tail lights.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0574.jpg&hash=1a506bb0f2186e72cba22e97208f4a7eac9ee46a)

7) When you're done, it should look something like this :

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0575.jpg&hash=3afd18b1c67972f15600b3edaa05863197c1d81e)

8) Get the exposed wires from your cable and wrap it around the exposed wires from the tail lights and get it ready for soldering. For my application, the red cable went to the yellow tail light cable and the white cable went to the thicker brown cable. Solder away. Repeat for the other side

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0577.jpg&hash=0282130fe61ee87b75138a8511e8e42fe23e94bb)

9) Mount the inner tail lamps back onto your boot lid. (my soldering job probably looks super crap! hahaha!). Make sure you cover the newly soldered connections with some electrical or insulation tape.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0580.jpg&hash=b0e3562ecd9a36574838f7aeafb0dbd9b80c364c)

10) When it's all mounted, it should look like this. As you can see, I had a lot of excess cable left but thats alright as I neatly arranged it against the existing wires and zip-tied it all together so it doesn't rattle inside when I put the bootlid trim back on. At this point I also swapped out the OEM bulbs for the white halogen bulbs from B1 Hybrid.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0578.jpg&hash=bb7649d982eb0d297a7cfbddfd65726eae878d4f)

That's it! Now, you have dual reverse lights and no more people saying to you that you have a light out when reversing! (excuse the crap picture quality)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0584.jpg&hash=6bada842ed66d880962a204d515711b0e66943b7)

Only thing is, if you were to pull the headlight switch to activate the rear fogs, both rear reverse lights will come on but only for a short period of time. It will turn off after about 5 seconds and you will get a "bulb out" error on the dash. For me, this is not a big thing because I have NEVER used the rear fog light ever. Even if you do pull the switch out and get that bulb out error on the dash, it goes away when you turn the car off and start it back up again.

Again, massive thanks to Lucas_R and In Black for helping me with all my queries.

Decided to head on down to the drag strip tonight. I had not taken the Golf R down the 1/4 mile at all, even when it was stock. Since performance mods had been done for a while now and it's pushed out 220kw at all 4 wheels on the dyno, I wanted to see how this translated on the drag strip.

- The car was not stripped of anything. It was full weight, including spacesaver + jack and tools in the boot.
- Tires pumped to about 42psi. Dunlop SportMaxx GT (235/45/19)
- 2/3 fuel left in the tank when I arrived. BP Ultimate 98RON.

Did 4 runs. The first run I did was my best run of the night.

First run : 12.908 @ 106.75mph. 2.049 60ft.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0905.jpg&hash=bd4eb6021b94188d02c4c63f32eacb31d1a51a6d)

Second run : 13.042 @ 106.29mph. 2.104 60ft.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0904.jpg&hash=f410bf4d4cffe93f53b6acf3038564f827c4bd53)

Third run : 12.938 @ 106.77mph. 2.080 60ft.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0904.jpg&hash=f410bf4d4cffe93f53b6acf3038564f827c4bd53)

Fourth and final run : 12.952 @ 107.43mph. 2.069 60ft.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frealityfromwords%2F2015%2FIMAG0907.jpg&hash=4c0a0eb8e89bc3ffd9e185c4208730316529b1c4)

Overall, it was pretty fun and it was great to know that it pulled consistent numbers. Curious to find out what it'd do if it was stripped of un-necessary weight, but I enjoyed the fact that the Golf R, being such a versatile car that it is, came up to the drags in full street trim, ran consistent 12's, and got me back home hassle free.

Next thing I might consider doing is a DSG Reflash. I have yet to do this and have heard it may improve the times a little bit as well as getting rid of the sluggishness in feel in D mode.

I approve of the reverse light mod. Should really do it on my MK5 GTI too.

As for the strip times, was that even on the 19" too? If so, then it was a pretty decent time for sure.
Doing a DSG map does make a massive improvement from drivability and also quicker times. Done a few here in NZ.

Keep up the modding and updating.

Thanks for that mate! yeah the reverse light mod is great! Completes the rear as far as I'm concerned.

The times were done as you see the car above. 19x9 ET37 all round, Dunlop Sportmaxx GT street tyres 235/45/19, full weight in the car including spacesaver and all the tools/jack, 2/3 fuel in the tank, 42PSI. It ran 12.9 all night.

Interesting that you put your pressure up on the tyres? I have always seen improvements well on a FWD by reducing the tyre pressure.

Something I was thinking about over the weekend, simply jump into the VCDS under CECM (If I recall correctly) and simply disable rear Fog in the coding. Then that error should seize to exist also?? Well just a thought.

New parts coming soon :

-Integrated Engineering Intake Manifold (still awaiting word back from them re: a query I had but shouldn't be much longer until I get a word back from them. Mainly for potentially going bigger turbo later on)
-OZ Futuras (rebuilding, 18x9 all round, new lips, barrels, repainted centre and gold bolts)
-BBS RS (rebuilding, 17" staggered with black bolts. Not sure of width atm, but will be something pretty epic, something like this : )

Teaser #2 of photoshoot. Joe keeps sending me these photos one at a time. Will post full set when he sends it all over to me, hopefully soon.

Met up with Daniel from OFIM.com.au and took some photos of both my Golf and his Mini. He drives a cool little red Mini Coupe that I had always seen from time to time and it was a car I quite liked. Don't see many of those around, especially nicely modded like the way he had. He's since upgraded to the Renault Clio Redbull edition so the Mini was soon to go up for sale. Weather turned out to be perfect for the day we shot.

Many thanks to Daniel for taking time out of his day to take some photos.

Finally picked these up. Going to rebuild them but will take my time. Hopefully not as long as it took for me to put the Professor SP1's on the car but just slow and steady :)

One barrel has a tiny crack which will need to be repaired but not a huge job. All 4 lips have gutter rashes but again, not too bad. Overall the wheels are in very good condition.

Need to pull them apart, polish the lips, repaint the centre face, replace bolts to gold and re-assemble. It'll be an (almost) square set of Oz Futuras 18x9 ET39 front / ET40 rear

Love how big the boot is on the Golf. 4x 18" rims fit snug and without problems
