Title: How to: repair 3 door sliding seat problem
Post by: w80ody on November 09, 2011, 04:54:42 pm
Is your 3door seat folding but not sliding forward to let people in the back of the car? I had this problem for the past 3 years and final got round to fixing it.

Parts required:

The part is listed on ETKA as “holder for bowden cable”

Passenger side part number – 1K3 881 132 B
Drivers side part number -  1K3 881 132 C

Lastest Price (Jul 2014): £0.67

(New part shown on right here)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuartwood%2FMK5_golf_seat_repair%2F1.jpg&hash=ac8189776c9c460080d0547d4a992a96a6575d2d)

Tools required:

Torch
Slot screwdriver or similar
Small pair of fingers!

The guide shows this part being replaced on the passenger side seat, drivers side is the same. I must say that by the close up pictures of my seat rails they look filthy….I blame the camera!!

For ease of access slide the seat as far forward and jack the height adjuster up as high as it will go. Highlighted is the mechanism were interested in.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuartwood%2FMK5_golf_seat_repair%2F2.jpg&hash=07684e8b3c79e3e608060f649b63975d9ffbd6a6)

I did the same with my driver’s seat and tilted/slide it a couple of times to understand how handle and tilting action adjusts the cable which attaches to the seat runner.

When the seat is tilted forward the cable comes into tension and pulls on a catch mounted on the rear outer seat rail which releases the seat allowing it to slide forward.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuartwood%2FMK5_golf_seat_repair%2F3.jpg&hash=6311f10baf2b233d44b3daf61950a9ca1b734ddb)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuartwood%2FMK5_golf_seat_repair%2F4.jpg&hash=f349465ff1fe4a846769840cd837f04f4038ba27)

The issue I had was when tilted this cable would not be in tension as the clip which keeps it in tension was broken.

To release the cable, unscrew the screw tensioner shown and pop it out of the bracket.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuartwood%2FMK5_golf_seat_repair%2F5.jpg&hash=6525c837272aa12316e7f4c4ad3943783395fb90)

It can then be unhooked from the guide hole on the left hand side.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuartwood%2FMK5_golf_seat_repair%2F6.jpg&hash=1e015d1fa6c6fd2e707a3938fc9f753caedd7f9b)

Under the back adjustment winder you can trace the cable. To aid access the plastic cover pictured below at the back of the seat slides down and then is bent back and down out of the way. (Thanks Huntsman - made it a bit clearer with your description)

My cable guide was already out the clip but you may have to remove yours. The guide then can be pulled off cable.

Old and new cable guide, you can see the design change on the left to improve the strength of the hooked lug.

Attach new guide to the cable.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuartwood%2FMK5_golf_seat_repair%2F11.jpg&hash=d57bfc79e43af9d5193dd73590c0d4e557a3b0f6)

The bottom of guide hooks onto seat base.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuartwood%2FMK5_golf_seat_repair%2F12.jpg&hash=632983e3b53beb7430a8eda4269699d5fc16e096)

Circled is where the guide clips into position.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuartwood%2FMK5_golf_seat_repair%2F13.jpg&hash=f9e3732a12eb6c186b62de4e319d01317092a77d)

A screwdriver is handy here to pop the clip back into position.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuartwood%2FMK5_golf_seat_repair%2F14.jpg&hash=5a64688a2b06260ab6cffce82d03bc192bea331e)

Refitting the cable is then the reversal of the previous steps shown, adjusting the plastic tensioner screw till the seat slides smoothly without making a ratchey noise.

Whilst you are working at your seats, here’s an easy way to make some cash…..

One M10 spline + 5mins removing your seats and viola

Nicely done..continuous improvement at its best  :happy2: my passenger seat makes a ratchety sound when sliding forward (seat folded up) - could this mean that the mechanism is close to breaking point?

Post thanked! Just done this today! Really really impressed with actually how easy of a solution it is! For the sake of 55p I also changed my driovers side and they both now slide like there ice on glass!

Yes this is what my drivers seat did so I changed that as well and it fixed that, another free alternative is tighten up the cable by twisting the black nob in picture 3, but for 55p I would replace the whole thing as these ones seam a hell of a lot stronger then the old ones!

Cheers for the thanks folks  :happy2:

Thought I’d take the time to write the guide as I’m sure there’s loads of golfs out there with the same problem.

Took me 3 years of friends complaining about getting in the back for me to get round to doing this but well worth it. If you have the same issue you’ve no excuse for not doing it when it’s as simple and cheap as this!

Its good to see that VW realised the flaw and beefed up the new design.

I've been wondering wy the passenger seat worked but the drivers side didnt.  I thought it was the wee metal slidey thing that can move.  Right, off to VW tomorrow!  Bet they dont charge me 55p!!

Im going STRAIGHT to my dealer on friday and fitting itsaturday first thing and sorting my seat. People like you make this forum invaluable.  I will do both seats.  It's a no brainer the clip has been beefed up big time.  Good to see VW have acknowledged it and sorted it.  Its so annoying not being able to slide the passenger.  Once sorted my seat.  I'll be sending thanks your way. Top man! :happy2:

Hi,

Probably being really thick here but I can't find the above 'holder for bowden cable'; on ebay! Thing is called VW up and they said it was £28, i'd rather pay 62p!  :happy2:

Help!

Actually on looking at the seat, the handle that I pull on literally feels like its not connected as the seat does not even fold forwards.

Stunning  :happy2:
I was about to start pulling the seat back rest to pieces; I thought top seat release leaver pulled the cable you talk about lol.

The fact that as the seat leaned forward pulled the cable was lost on me.

Under the back adjustment winder you can trace the cable. I took this trim out which aids access
The plastic cover mentioned above at the back of the seat slides down and then is bent back and down out of the way; just in case people missed that.

My passenger seat slider stopped working last night. Although it's not just when you are trying to get in the back, it wont slide at all now.

Is this likely to be the clip or something else as well? I haven't had chance to have a look at it yet.

While working on repairing my seat as per the brilliant instructions in this tread the seat did lock up.
There is a metal slider in the outside track that allows the seat to remember where the user last set the seat if you accidentally knock this to far towards the front the seat seems to lockup. Use a thin screwdriver to rock the slider, and unlock it, and move it aft. Then the seat will move.

Hope that helps (assuming it is the same fault)

If you put the seat in the highest setting and move seat adjuster up and down and rock the back rest you can see how the seat should work.

I have purchased the new parts from a VW agent using my car reg and they match the part numbers in this excellent thread.

My problem is...
There is no way that part fits my vehicle :(

In the photos of the assembly, the depth between the top and the bottom lugs exactly matches the depth of the seat frame the part clips to.
On my vehicle the depth of the seat frame is nearly twice that of the supplied part!

Anyone else had this problem?
Did they change the seat around 10/3/2005 on a 2.0 GT 140 bhp TDI?

Guide updated with latest prices for parts and clearer description.

GTI-Ross - Hope you have been able to find a fix by now but I would be pretty sure that the mk6 seat frame is the same or similiar design to that of the mk5. A chat with a friendly VW parts desk showing the ETKA diagram of the seat will confirm that though.

Sorry for digging up an old thread.  Changed these at the weekend which was a bit of a pain but done in the end.  Passenger seat slides now as well as tilting although is a bit ratchety, not fussed about this for the amount times it will be used, just glad it now works.

However, on the drivers side when I went to clip the plastic bit of the actual cable into this replacement part, the plastic snapped so now the cable doesn't sit in my new clip.  Anyone know the part number and cost for a replacement cable with plastic surround etc?  Also how is this fitted?  Looks possibly like it just hooks on when you look in at rear of seat with the small cover removed as per this guide, then runs down to adjuster and fastened there?
