Title: Battery replacement recommendations - AXX engine
Post by: sambo101 on January 04, 2017, 05:38:34 pm
So whoever owned my car before has a tiny 50 amp battery in it. Not up to scratch at all.

Can anyone recommend the correct size battery for the AXX please, I have searched but its turning up mixed results.

Will this suit?

Thanks

Think the correct size is a 096 battery (278x175x190) for the GTI. The Varta Silver line (E44) 77Ah battery is a popular replacement for the GTI and has more cranking power than stock, not that badly priced too for a top tier battery.

I personally have a Hankook UMF57800 (78Ah) in mine as it's a bit cheaper than the Varta and generally works fine in my GTI with all the added gizmos so far.

It'll certainly be better than what you've got.  :happy2:

You can get the higher power Varta as Honda OEM for £55 delivered from a main dealer here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141851085043

Great deal! Thanks...

this is slightly cheaper than mine was collected from Tewkesbury batteries, and cheaper than Tanya mail order was when I got mine!

Another vote for the Varta E44. It was the best spec'd battery when I got it last year.

Go for the Varta but avoid Tanya, they let me down last year when I needed one next day

I bought that Halfords one in your original posting. It's been perfect. But I wish I'd asked on here first as it looks like the Varta is just as good, if not better, for half the price!!!

I got a good deal online for my Bosch (s5 I think), has served me well and still going strong after leaving my car standing for a year, just needed a jump start.

I got the Bosch one & cant fault it 1.5 yrs later, but the price on the Varta on eBay is really good.

You can go as low as 60Ah 280DIN/480A (if you want to save 1.5Kg) from the bigger ones mentioned above

No. The system is wrong and that battery is too small. Give it a year or two and you will struggle with the cold starting - been there, done that. The correct sized battery is '096'

I just shoved a dealer battery in.  The biggest that would fit in the battery tray.  Been perfect for 2.5 years now.

Halfords are pretty expensive for batteries - I just picked up a Bosch from euro car parts, just make sure you use the discount codes on their site. They are the DFS of motor spares.

Well put sir!

Don't really understand why anyone uses them as opposed to their cheaper division...Car Parts 4 Less?

Do they have any stores? The battery in my other car got run flat, and I was able to run out and get a discounted battery from euro car parts and get it fitted within 30 mins! Can't do that with an online store

Just trying to help, as many people don't seem to know that exactly the same items can be had at CP4L much cheaper, free delivery. I am nothing to do with motor trade!
You're right - CP4L have no shops, and so perhaps can be cheaper? However I live a minimum 2 1/4 hr round trip from nearest ECP...and then there's the Q!

My local factors seem to keep very little in stock for an Ed 30.
TPS is about 1 hr round trip away (Carrs/Helston VW), and generally not at all helpful. I tend to buy VW thru Lookers at Blackpool on my way to/from work - their parts dept are recommended.

I tend to plan maintenance, then buy service consumables in"bulk" and stock them myself (e.g. have 2 sets of plugs and 2 sets filters, and a spare set of pads for my BBK atm!). Also carry a "used but good" PCV/DV/HP fuel p/p etc! After all we are talking about a 120K, Ten year old car.
My battery was changed at first sign of it starting to fail, well before it let me down  :innocent:

Breakdowns are harder, but we have a couple of spare cars :signLOL:
...otherwise there would be no groceries - we are on the Tesco blacklist since their van got stuck; Morrisons ripped their van side open on the gate posts!
- the joys of rural living!

Thanks for all of the advice!!

Euro car parts have 25% off car batteries at the moment!

It was a genuine question: I wondered if they were Scotland or Wales specific, or something similar.

I'd prefer to use them TBH. The ECP prices are so inconsistent it's annoying. A bottle of oil will be £30 one day and £35 the next depending on which discount code is active.

I know ECP offer free delivery too, but would prefer to just deal with one price when I need something

What’s the ‘best’ battery and supplier considered to be these days?

Just got a E44 Varta Silver Dynamic Car Battery 77Ah from Tayna, £77.77 delivered.
My original factory battery finally died.
Load test on new battery confirmed excellent condition.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210110/39098d3e5291ff022689244316f77317.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210110/ddb4418f08469e002444c432028ca3b5.jpg)
