Changed the flywheel. Old PN was discontinued, new PN you can only find OEM for 1100 euros... Insane. Fitted a Sachs one, used on diesels with dq250 dsg. Works great and only costs ~300 euros. Sachs part number 2295 000 541.

That pilot bearing is a massive PITA to take out without the proper VAG extractor tool. We chiselled away at it till it came out in little pieces, wasted an hour on that crap and it's a 30sec job with the tool. All the youtube guides with bread / grease are useless.

Had the car at Combe recently:

The inside wheel in this one is just about off the ground if you look closely enough

Golf was super reliable and rapid all day. The pace is really coming along now.

Running around -2.8 degrees front camber/rear camber -2 degrees and 1mm toe out on front and 3mm toe out on rear. It had great corner entry but it still washes out on the fronts when the temps start to rise, despite less grip it has a nicer balance when the tyres are cold. That is the max front camber it can run currently, still deciding whether to change coilover or just fit new top mounts. Tom at Retro Resus told me about using "droop straps" on the rear of the car to reduce droop and lift the inside rear wheel to help rotation, its a cheap mod so something I will be picking up soon.

The brakes 100% need attention though, it is so twitchy on the rear currently when applying brakes. I am sure it is because the mk7 golf R brakes use a larger master cylinder so the rear brakes get applied a fraction before the fronts. I'm currently investigating the idea of fitting a mk7 golf r master cylinder instead and seeing if this fixes the issue.

Nice GTI, my favorite colour! Any more progress on this?
In the last picture, are those TT arms or  passat ones?

I’d forgotten that I hadn’t updated this again. I’ll try to get it up to date tomorrow, there are loads more updates.

The arms in the picture are superpro ones which I got for an absolute steal.

Have been looking for a clear answer to this but can't find one. I've managed to acquire MK6R calipers (i.e. same as the R32) for my ED30 off a mate who's upgrading his brakes. Conscious of the weight increase, I was thinking of going with 340mm TTS size discs rather than the usual 345s.

Just wondered if anyone had fitted Clubsport S discs to their MK5 with the 6R/R32 calipers - any issues with them fitting? Are they a worthwhile upgrade even without R calipers?

And do you know if there's a noticeable weight difference between those and regular Brembos/MTECs etc.

Pic of the car is below (just had sills and a blow over!) It won't be getting tracked - but still wouldn't mind decent "lightweight" discs

Cheers

How to Guides / Troubleshooting / Timing issue
« Last post by MartinNorhave on July 21, 2024, 05:40:43 pm »
Hi there. I bought a mk5 gti and was told that the timing belt had been replaced recently.
Today I decided to check the timing using vcds and it didn't look good.
The phase position is -9 degrees. On cold start I can hear a slight rattle so I think the chain is up for a change. But doesn't -9 seem a bit excessive if the chain is the only problem? From what I have heard the chain might cause up to 6 degrees of error.
Should I also replace the belt?

I also noticed that the "cam. adjustment intake bank 1" is 43,1% at idle. Shouldn't this be closer to 5%?

Hope you can help me :)

Mk5 General Area / Aircon / climate control turns on by itself
« Last post by Dre on July 20, 2024, 10:19:14 pm »
Hi guys, as the title says I've just been out in my car and the aircon and climate control is turning on by itself. I press off and then notice it comes on again by itself after a few minutes. I had to turn it off at least 3/4 times on a 15 minute drive.

Can anyone shed any light on what the issue is.

You must have a good relationship with TPS to get a genuine water pump and belt kit for £150.  Dealer price for all that is well over double.
We don't use TPS much at all really. I know in the past when I used to use them quite regularly and you could actually go inside and speak to someone on the counter (the good old days) they'd have leaflets with offers on. So I might have been lucky, they made their money back with the price of the thermostat
