Title: My Mk5 Golf GTI
Post by: Greigzy on February 03, 2014, 12:05:42 pm
So I thought I would finally post up my build thread so far.

So I'm Greig, I'm from Aberdeen and recently bought this mk5. I have known the car since 2006 and have always dreamed of owning it. For info, this is my 14th VW, after a few Mk2's, R32, Lupo GTI's etc.

So I sold the R32 -  it was an ace car, but not too practical on the day to day commute now that I work in Dyce, and I got an offer I really couldn't refuse. The new owner will definitely look after too which is great to know.

So this is how it currently stands

So a few updates.

Mk6 switches are here. Ordered up new interior handles, passenger side came, as did another passenger side. Its been sent back for a drivers one and should be here tomorrow so I can get it all swapped over and looking minty fresh.

Next was the gearknob. Always loved the votex one that lomax had in his mk5 (mk4 anniversary without the red GTI). It finally came last week, and I added my alcantara and orange stitching gaitors I ordered to match.

Summer wheels also arrived today. Got them for a pretty penny with tyres, no kerbing, but do need repolished .

Thank you .

I live in Aberdeen, so about 45 miles or so to get to Ballater. So I go out that way at least once a month for drive, and slightly further afield in the summer months

So a couple of wee things done over the past 2 weeks or so:

So first off was to fit the new interior handles and mk6 switches. As you can see the old ones were hideously scratched:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.staticflickr.com%2F3673%2F12420812645_e8517af7e0_z.jpg&hash=4ff4a753a3d590f45cc93a8aba14f12adce9d2ee)

So this was changed:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.staticflickr.com%2F3818%2F12420810445_75f0a59660_z.jpg&hash=9069d38ac4618d11c92394b5aeb4895d9885b91e)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7333%2F12421294244_caa2d12bf3_z.jpg&hash=5653971b3de40293a54b99dd92b4b0c9e29a989f)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7437%2F12420959023_d430a8ffa0_z.jpg&hash=98bbaf4e09baf135b5d7070ac9cd7bbec3cdb5eb)

Next on the list was the R8 engine caps from Phope:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm3.staticflickr.com%2F2839%2F12421291054_79fbd8b6ac_z.jpg&hash=4a0844ff7e78c0f014ca3d2472193285491b7a6d)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.staticflickr.com%2F3718%2F12420802735_b3e1e49121_z.jpg&hash=b009adba63a751c599d27417c3654789d22e0290)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7420%2F12420953053_8121881413_z.jpg&hash=ce558ac5fe09332a87c77702ab232d62005cec8a)

HOWEVER, I have a strange issue with the oil cap, it doesnt want to twist on and lock in place. I tried fitting my Dads Audi one to my car and it fits, and the R8 one fits on his car. My gti cap also fits onto his car, so its all strange  :scared: . Anyone any ideas why?

Next on the list was to fit magnets to the rear of the grill so I could have an easily removable plate, but they weren't strong enough . Also found that number plate stickies have not been kind to the grill over the past few years, so need to get this painted:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.staticflickr.com%2F3758%2F12420951093_c54bb61245_z.jpg&hash=5fdacc284e6d37d8d2ba5065687e1a0bdccd5e78)

So I;m thinking I might go carbon  :happy2: .

And here it is clean :)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm3.staticflickr.com%2F2821%2F12420797355_966944d275_z.jpg&hash=81e710c7c5c1f16f12fc6ef1a3d7ce41805dfc91)

So more stuff!

Plates finally on, so it now feels like mine! Also have a cheeky US rear plate tucked away in the hope I can find a us rear.

Also to complete the chrome switch collection, I managed to find a fuel flap switch:

And was really geeky and bought the Mk5 boot pop kit from here:

Which means it will do this (dont know how to embed things):

So a couple of new bits for this month.

Found autotech HPFP internals mega cheap, so snapped that up and should be here tomorrow. That gives me everything for Stage2+ once fitted (apart from brakes and engine mounts)

Bought a new rev G diverter valve. Ends up the car already had the rev G on, but replaced it on the basis that it felt a little weak on boost at times. Now its alot better, and also fitted a Forge Atmospheric Valve from when did had his mk5 GTI.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7344%2F12910880623_1b1c302851_z.jpg&hash=f61b4e55579ca2ca48a43db61f0235bd37026fd9)

I also managed to pick up full FIS dash clocks for £60, so awaiting delivery of them, and then have to work out how to code them!

And last but not least, started polishing these with Andrew:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.staticflickr.com%2F3680%2F12910787725_6fb8d7610d_z.jpg&hash=e2943907c23dcf8ae2017b5f8baee02cb7d185a8)

They will have black inserts when I have polished them all, and some new tyres too, when I get round to it. Hopefully get them on mid april!

So a few things have happened.

Uprated Autotech HP fuel pump is in (after slight ballache). The mid range now makes me happy

Have bought a set of folding mirrors and puddle lights - trying to get all the options on the car

Paint was done by Greg. It is amazing!

I would bore you with before and afters, but it had a couple of dents, rusty rear arches, a couple of chips and paint coming off the grill. It is now mint and I would highly recommend him!

Decide to try the wheels on - they have made me happy:

So some more updates.

Car went in for it's MOT yesterday. Failed on a CV boot, which was fitted by Lovett tonight and it gets retested tomorrow, so happy days.

The air bag light has been intermittent, which ended up being the plug that connects the airbag from the seat back to the seat base, before it runs into the plug on the floor. I ended up cutting out the plug and soldering the cables together, heatshrinked each one and then wrapped it in loom tape.

Also played on Vagcom and got the US lights on the headlights:

And also got a set of Audi TT 10 spokes. Stats are 18x9 et50ish. I think they would look great with a set of big orange Porsche brakes underneath. Trial fitted them tonight (its great having an airgun) and the rears are perfect, fronts need 5mm spacers to clear the strut.

As always, share your thoughts :)

Love the wheels  :happy2:

Do these need to have spacers if fitting on a golf gti?

So the car got it's weekly wash, and since it was a fine night, I got a couple of photos of the car.

Think I prefer these to the ones above though, and the monoblocks are actually lighter and have friendlier widths etc for the mk5 platform. But if anyone wants the Audi TT wheels give me a message :)

And I have my highline clocks fitted too. I need a highline control module to get the functions but the display looks better.

So a few updates.

No-one wanted to buy it, so I spent more money on it .

-New wheel specs are: BBS LM080/82 18x8 on the front and 18x9 on the rear. 225/40/18 on the rear and 215/40/18 on the front.

-Also bought a US rear bumper for it, got it painted, and have buggered the paint within a day, so need to get that sorted.

-Barry at Autodents came and removed two dents

-And spent the last two days machine polishing it, so it looks lovely :)

Specs:

FK Coilovers

The ride height looks perfect on your car, are there different versions of the FK Coliovers ? If so what ones are these and what are they set at ?

They are FK Silverlines and have been on the car for around 6 years. Still all ok, and still free after all that time.
