Title: Massive Mods/Detailing Catalog
Post by: dazza on October 20, 2014, 09:56:24 pm
After much work and a couple of thousand lines of code the mods catalog is now active.

Will be posting more info and how 2 soon. For now add some mods.

Once mod is added users who have this mod can review add links etc. Plus you can add the mod to your profile.

Thanks to @rich83 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=709) for sorting the categories/images.

Haven't yet, on ipad ATM which means all buttons are black... Will do later, but I'm sure someone else would've tried before then.

Tis a great feature... I wonder if a stripped down list of the mods could be added to the user signature strip?  Or perhaps a sidebar profile link to Mods like the VW badge... Gees, when will it end Dazza? :rolleye:

Cheers mate, perhaps it's an iPad brightness thing... I wonder if the text was white, then it work better on the black/grey and colour versions.

Works great on PC :happy2: IOS text could be lighter on the buttons as above.

You thought about adding the Mod Name to the Title of the document and description etc. for SERP's?  I think you'd end up creating A LOT of forum traffic, perhaps unwanted, once the Mod Catalogue grows.

Awesome, just gets better.
Think if the buttons had a white color, it would work two fold; i.e better for the colour bg button version and for the dark grey/black version on IOS.

Think it's in mod.css, just add color:#fff
.want_add
.but_add
.mod_button

Those coloured background buttons are dark grey/black on my iPad 4.

Thought a white font color would suit both the coloured version and anyone who's using IOS.

It's in mod.css file

and specifically these class types:

.want_add
.but_add
.mod_button

You using Firebug?
It's not really an issue chaps, just wanted to highlight it. :happy2:

Not sure how to screenshot on iPad (does anyone know?)

But I've taken a pic on my phone, lol:

Notice the black text on Black buttons AND the DIV is pushed clear of the sidebar menu, probably fixable by removing any clear tags.
Title: Re: Massive Mods Catalog
Post by: Scottymon on October 21, 2014, 05:07:17 pm
Regarding the drop of the DIV above, it's a width constraint issue, manually resize your browser to see the effect. :happy2:

The drop of the DIV is still present, but I'm sure a bit of a tweak will sort this... iirc (from earlier) it's around 1177px  :happy2:

The only other thing that's a bit different on that Mod page is there are 4 / 5 images uploaded iirc.

Nice one. Also, think I may of just added the 100th mod... Was actually quite tricky as now I've sat down and tried to list the modifications I've fitted I realise I've not really done much! 150 photos, mostly after I've cleaned it. I need more modifications! :P

Done.
As multiple users can add the images its would be complicated to pull all the images back out for editing. Considering images are copied, renamed and resized to multiple sizes every time someone adds or edits a picture. If i didn't do this the images would take ages to load as is the case with the FS section.

Will add it to my never ending todo list. If not just post any changes here and i'm sure someone will sort it.

Firstly thank you for everyone that has contributed to the mods section.

People have spent a lot of time adding mods and i've spent a lot of time making the mods section very user friendly.

A couple of things:

1. Don't bother adding every mod to your profile as i will just delete them and block you from the mods section.
2. Wanted items are for people looking to buy. I've already been contacted by a member regarding an item i had as wanted. Don't waste people time and add items you have no intension of buying.

@dazza (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10457) - problems all fixed, thanks very much!

Here's a crazy idea to get you thinking. Currently, users can add a modification via the mods catalogue as "wanted". What if, using the same categories in the For Sale section, the forum could auto-notify sellers when people click "wanted" in the mods catalogue. Or when you clicked wanted is shows a list of current adverts that match your requirements.

For example, say I clicked "wanted" on a NQSBBK in the mods catalogue. User X has one for sale. Both of us get informed automatically that there is one available/one required and helps speed up the search process for mods?

Good idea but i don't know how to implement it. The FS posts have not been modified they are stored in the database the same as this post i am typing now. Not really an easy way to access them. Another reason why the fs section is slightly slow.

The only thing to do would be build a classifieds section then the possibilities would be endless.

OK another thought.

When a user adds there first mod.

You have to select your platform.

Then we could incorporate some mods from our members not running a mk5

When you add a mod you could then selects what platform its for.

Or am i making it to complicated.
Title: Re: Massive Mods Catalog
Post by: Scottymon on October 25, 2014, 04:34:45 pm
I think you should post an additional image with your mod on, not just catalogue photos; I've done it with most of mine where possible.

I also think each Mod should be re-edited by the owner over time, so that it is a more rounded detailed post.

I like the idea of the Q&A that could be very handy.  Once a mod is really well featured, peeps should start linking to it/them as a means of answering a forum question...  you know we have the "Which DV is the best" etc.
Title: Re: Massive Mods Catalog
Post by: Shoduchi on October 25, 2014, 04:40:21 pm
Not sure if the mod section has a point on listing mods not for mk5. Some mods can be done in different cars that share the mk5 platform, so those can be listed. Others like different head lights, radios, etc., I don't see the logic. There are other forums dedicated to those other vehicles.

You can make another list just for other kinds of engines that we can select/write a prefix to identify which engine it's referred to. Most mods here are for the 2.0 TFSI/TSI engine so it should have the most visibility, I think.

Quick question, if we copy an image URL from a website, is the image saved to the local DB here or does it pull it from the linked site everytime? Just curious as I wouldn't want a website to change their links only for it to become redundant here. Hope that makes sense!

Great thanks.

Also, you probably know but just to let you know that on the new detailing section, when you add a product you can choose from 2 categories, which creates duplicates in the number counted but only one item displayed.

Title: Re: Massive Mods/Detailing Catalog
Post by: Scottymon on November 03, 2014, 02:58:12 pm
I don't think the Basic Standard Poverty Spec items should be in the main categories, but optional extras are OK imo.

E.G: Xenons, Cruise Control etc. OK,

but stuff like GTI seats, GTI dials, GTI bumper, kick plates etc. should be in a sub category "Standard GTI Parts" because they are useful for those who don't have a GTI; Part numbers etc. but won't clutter the main listings for those who have them already i.e. Every GTI5 owner.
Title: Re: Massive Mods/Detailing Catalog
Post by: Shoduchi on November 03, 2014, 03:03:56 pm
Scottymon's suggestion is very good. Create a sub-category for the standard GTI parts like he suggested as it will be more easy for non-GTI owners to find the GTI parts and won't clutter the rest.
Title: Re: Massive Mods/Detailing Catalog
Post by: Shoduchi on November 03, 2014, 03:21:11 pm
Maybe you can also make a new category with standard equipment because some might not have some parts that come standard in higher spec'd models but still want to get them in their Golfs. I'm thinking in the dash cubby, cup holders and highline cluster, for example.

In my country all GTIs have an highline cluster, MFSW, cruise control and 18'' Detroits/Monzas II. In the UK they don't so it's hard for me to know which is standard and which is an optional. It's better that the admins put the different items in the correct category if they're misplaced. I've put many GTI standard parts but I know not all Golfs have them, so they might help those who want to get them to know the part number or even their existence.
Title: Re: Massive Mods/Detailing Catalog
Post by: dazza on November 03, 2014, 03:57:45 pm
Thanks for your input guys. Some of the items that have been added i doubt anyone has retrofitted. If they have IMO they should be the only users that add it to their mods list.

Banjo bolt delete for example if people start adding this cos their car has no banjo bolt. It defeats the whole object of what i was trying to do. If someone asks myself or bigmig95 about this mod we can advise them how much of a pita the nut under the manifold is.

Or another scenario 50 users have rain light sensor maybe i should retrofit it. LOL pita.

My xenons were factory fitted as an option when new.
Not a modification I've done.
I selected xenons because obviously I have then.

I'm not going to tell anyone to remove a mod. I built the system with an idea of how it should work and it worked against me in this case. Members contacting other members for help with a mod they have no idea about.

Xenons are a mod so should be listed.

This is a MODS catalog not a list of the features you car came from the factory with.

If you've modded it add it to your profile. If not don't bother as other members may contact you for help and advice you cannot provide.

If K9's problem with his xenons is the shaking when passing over hard bumps, he opened a topic about it. I'll try to help there.

Not updated this in a while.

We now have 236 members with mods and a total of 2384 mods.

Can we add some oils please??

The detailing catalog is a bit sparse if anyone has anything to add that would be great.
