Cant stand them, its almost ok if they dont badge it but very annoying if they do. I make a point of showing them why its an R '32' by making the 3.2 howl as i go past!

But whatever you do don't put a badge on it trying to 'pretend' it actually is!  :fighting: :fighting:

Lol I saw a black gti it had the gti badge on the rear boot lid on the right instead of left and had two small skinny exhaust poking out the lower bumper made to look like the gtis then he had the cheek to look in his rear view mirror and speed off as if he is in the real thing

Couldn’t have put it better myself. Some people might not be in the position to afford to buy/run a gti/r32.  So a replica is ideal. Just as long as its not badged up as a gti/r32

Was riding round looking like an R32 except it still had the standard rear bumper, and a friend of a friend who has an R32 had his rear bumper stolen overnight whilst parked on his drive and then a few days later the R32 rep had an R32 rear bumper without the exhaust!  :signLOL:

I would never make a car look like something it isn't.

As for insurance, how many of these people are gonna inform them they've turned their non-GTI to look like a GTI? I'd imagine not many!

Dont mind sorted replicas, what I do hate is people with boggo models with no mods sticking on GTI,BMW M or Audi S badges.

There is a Fiat punto round my way where someone has stuck on VW TDI badges and polo 16v badge

....

Yes, it's the badges which cause the offence if they aren't true. I don't quite understand someone going to the trouble of creating a replica but we're all different.

A guy I know locally has made his Mk5 TDI look like a GTI and done it very well but of his own accord he is against badging it as a GTI. When I gave him a spirited ride in mine to show him what a real GTI was like he was gobsmacked!

Im with Greenouse  :pomppomp: I dont mind fake unless its badged up thats why mine has no badges at all :chicken:

I also tried to keep it low key so it doesn't initially stand out has a GTI,  Im also bored of the gti look so on the look out for the Jetta/GT front end now,

I tested loads of cars before I decided on my current GT tdi sport,  I dont regret it one bit,  Although I will be waiting for the price of the new GTi to come down cos im quite liking them now they've grown on me. :happy2:

you should come huddersfield mate ill show you gti replicas that you wont be able to tell apart unless you open the bonnet.

There's some dude who lives near me in Lindley who has got a black TDI (I suspect) that looks absolutely identical to my GTi. There's another steel grey car with a red splitter that I presume isn't a proper GTi. It's crazy, I'll never understand why these people don't dedicate their time and money to affording the real thing. It's a thumbs down from me.

Insurance may be a major factor with this as depending on their age Insurer's may refuse to insure them on a 'real' version of whatever it is they are attempting to copy.  :happy2:

I'm sure most of us have suffered at the hands of a big nasty Insurance company trying to charge you double what the car is worth!!!! Don't be a hater Mr Parker!

ok,,,, jumping in...... for what its worth its ETTO and i think most gti owners can see an "engineered " item but if it looks good i can appreciate the time thought and moolah put into it.some of the build threads iv read are just mindblowing for the ingenuity and the work processes gone in to them so for those guys :congrats:

it does make me laugh if they badge it up to be something its not but it aint gonna hurt my feelings so i just shrug and laugh.
and at the end of the day if you cant afford a gti/r32 or the insurance/tax then building one aint a bad option.........

BUT...... if they are gonna do it, make it look good cos if people see crappy looking shoddy stuck on chavmobiles then it makes everyone question the quality of a veedub in general.

i dont wanna be associated with a16yr old with a naff lookylikey!
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh breathe,, feel better now :ashamed:

I follow your conclusions, at the same time i have the r32 badge on the r32 front of my gti, is that wrong?
I would love to get an r20 badge made but it has to look original.
Without the r32 the front looks like a jetta, and i ustify my r32 badge with the car having 318hk and as nearest round number is 320 and of with the zero, there you have= 32 :jumping:
And with the other mods the r is justified  :innocent:
Anyone here able to make a r20 badge tha fits the r32 front???

Well, I'm with mortygttdi and JPC on this one.

My '08 170GT TDI has GTI side skirts and grilles and a lovely colour coded rear GTI Bumper covering my removable towbar. (All genuine VAG parts and noted by my insurers)

It also has GTD badges front and rear.....

Does that make me 'beyond the pale' or a leper?

I think not - I really think what I've done is entirely tasteful -and no different in essence to the many 'mods' - both cosmetic and performance - that lots of folks on here have carried out?

Some of you will know that I joined this happy band as a Revo'd GTI owner (Steel Grey '07 MY), but being retired, I now enjoy the lower running costs, greater economy and brisk cruising that my 'oiler' gives me!

And it certainly isn't about money in my case.....

thats the usual thing i used to do,i had a old  84 plate   mg metro from new, blew the engine up mg metro(stop laughing) with all the engine done with a 8 port head  on high lift cam with a dog box attached to it--it was a good in its day against xr3i--it looked like a typical metro with alloy after i debadged it all as it is a insult to mg's

Back on topic. I understand the reason people make a car look like the flagship as for insurance reasons or maybe they do alot of miles but like the look of the GTI but don't badge it up like others have said and try race everything on the road

My mods are declared on my insurance and the biggest reason for buying a diesel was for my wife. She stopped driving cos my focusST300 was too fast for her so ended up selling it and buying my golf. I like my car to look good but not bothered about fast any more.

back on thread if you dont badge it then i dont care, Beemer drivers are the worst for pretending their car is something it aint.

Must .... Resist ... Must make ... Contribution.

I don't see anything wrong with makin your worldy goods as good they can be. I.e I like my car. I honestly can't afford to run a petrol and I'm not ashamed of that, my money goes into other things for the future. Business, pensions, etc. But I don't see anything wrong with making my car look nice but still maintain economical.

IF IF IF I don't try and pass it off as anything else! Which I have no intention of doing!

Your car looks nicer than most GTI's ive seen though mate! It isnt really a GTI rep either i wouldnt say as it has the ED30 wheels which are BBS CH's (one of the most popular golf wheels ever) If it had monzas then maybe it would be a little 'repy' (that a word lol)

Was that constructive  :signLOL:

indeed dude, never have been a dedicated follower of fashion - great minds  :drinking:

although dude, with the launch of the .:R20 you are potentially rebadging the identity of your car now such a beast exists for sale, thus invalidating your insurance?

It's not a r20, but only an r, so no confusion there, and in Denmark, we don't have the type insurance you have. We don't have to account for every little mod. Tax is different, when changing the model image of a car you need to pay for the model makeover, but mine is neither, it's just the r20  :happy2:

haha interesting thread, not sure what to make of it.

I'll put this into the mix, im 21yr old lad living in Northern Ireland (which is considered a 'high risk' country due to unsettled past times)  We are one of the countries in europe which get shafted the most with insurance prices, so with 'performance models' out of the question for a few years i settled for a rep, or a half blood as ive seen mentioned in this thread. Mine has the badge but im replacing it with a GTD, whenever i can get my hands on one.

If i lived in England i could have a GTi or even an R32 no problem because for me its not so much the cost of the car, its the cost to insure it.

Haters will be haters though  :booty:
