Title: De-Icer
Post by: El1M1N8OR on December 01, 2019, 08:02:38 pm
Bought the Homebargins De-icer for 99p.

Used half a can and it still took about 10 minutes to clear the ice..

Any recommended De-icer brands?

What’s wrong with old school scraping the ice off?

Any scrapers you recommend or reject?

Actually, I’m in the market for one too!
Currently have the Halfords Blue one -it’s ok, especially only a pound, but have used better & have suffered this for a few years, over due upgrade.
Wife tried one of those cone ones - it’s no good
Tempted to give the Swedish Ice Scraper a go -reviews are positive, and it’s flat - so not too much boor pocket real estate.

I’ve avoided scrapers because of risk of damage to the windscreen. I’ve found cheapo deicers to damage plastic trim. I tried the car chem pre icer and deicer set which deiced the windscreen and caused the interior surface of the windscreen to ice up instead.

Currently have a windscreen cover and use neat VW screenwash on a microfibre cloth to wipe away the iced up side and back windows.

Autoglym the best

Where's the cheapest place for Autoglym?

I just ordered the Prestone stuff.  That was free delivery on Amazon.  The Autoglym was free delivery over £20 order.

I’d highly recommend buying Isopropyl Alcohol as it comes in handy for many things around the house.

In terms of De-Icing, get yourself a good empty sprayer bottle.. Mix a good ratio of the alcohol with water and your all set.. I spray it on my iced windscreen and like magic the ice just melts instantly and turns into water.

Most de-icer brands key ingredient is a form of alcohol so save yourself some money and make your own which is much more effective too.

Don't do what I did the other morning, and empty half a tin of brake cleaner on your windscreen before realising what it was.... wondered why it wasnt working

Surprised no detailers have chimed in about chemicals and paint + it’s not great to seals - both rubber and the clubbing kind.

I put a post up requesting advice for a remap and no one has bothered to respond to that either..

Deicer gets more response..

Options are drive further afield, move house, or try someone more local such as Ecotune, or find a local Revo or APR Dealer

If even they are too far/further than you're willing to travel then your options are a local file flasher (The 'we map any vehicle' type setups' or you get yourself a postal remap from Bluefin etc. where you can flash it yourself. I wouldn't go down either of those routes though

I fill a plastic food bag with hot water from the tap, and run that over the windscreen, works wonders and keeps your hand warm at the same time! Clears the ice and isn't too hot that it might cause cracked windscreen issues.

Did see Ecotune in Glasgow. Are the revo and APR maps customised to the car or generic boxes?

I think this is because you have asked a question that has been asked and answered many times already, especially given how old our cars are now.

If you have a rummage around the site you will see such answers which are usually full of excellent info. Even a google search 'mk5 golf gti remap apr/revo/custom', will return many threads about remaps from this site.

Ecotune offer APR maps or their own custom mapping - they are good at what they do

APR and Revo are 'generic' maps (not tuning boxes) that have some customisation available (Octane maps for APR and Revo has some customisation available) but do not confuse these with then £150 flash maps offered by every man and his dog. They are EXTREMELY well developed, hundreds if not thousands of hours in development and testing and are very very good.

My car has been on Revo software (Stage 1, 2 and now 2+) for over 80 thousand miles and I'm more than happy with it

Thanks guys,

I called Ecotune today and gave me answers I was looking for.

Best bang for my bucks would be a stage 1 APR. I was considering an Airfilter upgrade but the tupe they offered was £440.  A Redline brand.
