Post by: apollo13 on January 04, 2011, 03:55:56 pm
Hi guys,

I just need a GTI owner to tell me if your speedo/rev/fuel and temp needles are lit without the lights on?

apollo has a GT TDI.

Thanks Rich, Yes I only have a derv! I was going to use a R32 cluster when I did my highline swap but I could'nt live with the rev counter not working like it should!!

I have even tried to commision a custom rev counter foil showing revs to 6000 and red line at 4500 in the GTI/R32 style but had no luck...yet!

So for now I'll hopefully settle with lit needles on the standard cluster  :happy2:

That would be difficult, would seem like the car keeps running out of puff mid rev range   Have you tried doctoring the numbers on the outside of the rev foil?

You've got it! I know Darren (Morty) has done it but it would drive me mad!!!

No all the numbers ect are left clear when the foil is printed/painted black and then filled in white afterwards so very hard to chop and change them around without it looking D.I.Y!!

I was hoping they would bring out a sporty diesel at some point with the same kind of foil!!.......I'm still waiting

Just because I'm a really nice person

The Midline/ Highline refers to the computer insert between the rev counter and speedo and it's abilities / functions.

Standard models are uisually fitted with the Midline. This can be identified by the fact that half the insert mention above (the lower half) is an LED display that shows you Outside temperature, MPG, miles to empty etc. The other half of the display are fixed warning lights (i.e. low fuel, etc). There is a black plastic bar that seperates the 2 parts of the display (see image below for midline display).

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg153.imageshack.us%2Fimg153%2F6344%2F383085display.jpg&hash=ac0b57bc5aa3b237f26d6aed02cd594995c7a984)

The highline display insert is all one piece and is totally LED. It performs all the functions of the midline display but is capable of much more. It has a series of menus that be toggled through and can display fuel computer stats, Audio menu (track playing, FM station name etc), Navigation menu (displays the turn by turn warnings on this display as well as on the Navi unit. Also, it allows you to control certain aspects of the cars behavoir, that's normally only able to be set via VCDS (VAG-COM). Items such as Headlight delay, one touch opening, auto locking over 5mph (and unlocking), winter tyres, swtiching units (°C to °F, 12h or 24h clock) etc.

As you can see the highline display is much more versatile than the midline and only costed about £50 to add as an option at order time. Problem is it wasn't an option many dealers new much about so many cars were specced without them.

For info, the highline display looks like below :

I'm not sure if it works with all clusters though so do this at your own risk!!

I tried it on my mates 2008 golf and it would'nt work so it might be an age thing much like the highline swap.

Right you need k+can commander for this..

Open 07 Kombi
Click on Instruments/Immobiliser
Read eeprom

Look for address 0x122
The value 74 needs to be changed
Change it to 72 for lit needles on ignition
Change it to 71 for lit needles and dials on ignition.

Is this in your R32 cluster Darren?

I'm not sure if all the clusters are written the same.

I wanted to scan someones GTI to see if the address was the same as they have lit needles, but no one near me.

Yes mate R32 cluster although now Iv'e read on the internet that you need to copy the .BIN file to your pc then open it with an hex editor change the bit in the line your after then write the file back to the cluster :happy2:

Couldn't wait but no joy, tried changing the value for line 00000120 with 74 to 72 but again I saved then wrote it to the cluster and once written it just changes the value back to 74 so that value must be some thing to do with the actual key has that will not change..

What hex editor are you using Darren?

I used XVI32.

address 0x122 the value might sometimes be F4 if so change to F2

Im not sure if the R32 clusters are the same?? Id of thought so though?

Il post some pics tomorrow, got to mess about with the anti virus first........

Im also trying to find the address that determines wether a cluster is petrol or diesel ie change the rev range, I know its possible just need the right address.

Ignition off

Ignition on

Lights on

I think the white backlighting goes much better with the RNS display

0X122 OR 0X120 entered in the hex editor will take you to the same line in the eeprom (10E) its just 0x122 will take you straight to the value you need to change 0x120 will move you two values back.

0x122 in my case was F4 so I changed to F2. Once eeprom has been re written you need to click reset cluster in k commander before you exit. You may have to leave the car for 20mins so the cluster can completely power down before it resets itself or disconnect the battery.

All this was for my non GTI/R32 cluster but I presume it will be the same.

Liking the lit needles Lee, but liking the White back light even more  :happy2:

I assume the change in back light colour is a hardware change (I.e. New LED's behind the clocks) rather than a simple coding change?

Cheers Andrew, Yes its a hardware change new SMD LED's.

I think the blue back lighting matched well with the old MFD2 but didnt look right against the RNS. I think the RNS being a newer unit is set up to compliment the newer white/black DIS.

I personally didnt do my cluster it was like it when I bought it (Going from mid to highline) I didnt even know and was very surprised when it lit up white! Much easier to read too.

Although I have done one conversion for a mate and it was pretty straight forward, just have to make sure the LED's are soldered in the correct orientation :happy2:

@ Darren if he reads this, is there any way of changing the RNS maps or is it a v7 thing? Im sure the older maps night colours were much better than the brown/beige they are now?? I thought changing the RNS theme from Sportline/Highline/Premium might make a difference but no luck.

Cheers Darren,

You probably know this, if you click address in XVI32 and then 'go to' type in 122 make sure its on hexdecimal it'll take you to the right value.

If you look on the left it should actually be address 10E in the hex editor  :happy2:

I'm clutching at straws really mate.

My mate done his cluster swap with his and he can't get any joy with the lit needles.

What I did was open k commander, click 07 kombi, click on instruments, read eeprom, save two copies to laptop, one labeled modded file-one labeled original file.

Open XVI32 click on file, open the modded file, click on address, click on go to,enter 122 in the box making sure hexdecimal is checked, change F4 to F2 (OR 74 to 72), click file, save as modded file.

Open k commander, click 07 kombi, click instruments, check vehicle model says golf v, read eeprom, click load file (or saved file cannot remember now), click write eeprom, close window, click reset cluster.

I left the car, locked it and left it for a couple of hours as I was told you have to let the cluster fully shut off??

When I went back I had lit needles.

Darren I'v written all this from memory as it's a pain to use k commander on my laptop because of the antivirus, even if I turn it off it causes problems so I have to completely delete it!!

Bumping an ancient post to see if any more information is now available...?

I also changed value 122 from 74 to 72, uploaded the modded BIN then reset the cluster. Left it for hours, but still no lit needles, and the 72 defaults back to 74.

I have 972 diesel clocks.

Anyone able to provide new info.?

Cheers

I'm not sure if it works with all clusters though so do this at your own risk!!

I tried it on my mates 2008 golf and it would'nt work so it might be an age thing much like the highline swap.

Right you need k+can commander for this..

Open 07 Kombi
Click on Instruments/Immobiliser
Read eeprom

Look for address 0x122
The value 74 needs to be changed
Change it to 72 for lit needles on ignition
Change it to 71 for lit needles and dials on ignition.

Hi!
I changed this in my Octavia 2, 2.0 TDI 2005 and 1.9 TDI 2006 and it is working!
Do you maybe know what do I have to change to get "Welcome" message?
Thank you!
