Title: Home made intake heat shield..... now with pics!!
Post by: matty_jetta on June 13, 2009, 10:57:35 am
Hi guys, wondering if someone would be kind enough to help me out, i am after fabricating a heat shield to cover my turbo similar to the evoms one for my intake. I have some metal kicking about and figued it wont be that hard to make.

So would anyone be willing to take some dimentions for me or even draw me a quick sketch?

Cheers, Matt

You need to take the anchor measurements from the engine cover mounts nearest the MAF housing. You'll have to take the engine cover off to get the measurements

Here's a quick pic of the EVOM's one showing where it mounts. :happy2:

oh so the actual engine cover studs get removed and i use these to hold the new cover down?

Think i will try making a cardboard template, obviously with a cold engine

Thanks for the picture Hurdy.

Anyone else got pictures showing the heat shield in all its glory?

Well guys, i have now mocked up a heat shield in card, will transfer it to my sheet metal tomorrow, pretty straight forward. Worst bit was getting the engine cover mount bolts out, they are a multi-splined 24mm deep socket, where the hell do you get one of them? :rolleye:

Any way wondering if bbq paint would work in this area? I know it gets super hot so anyone got ideas for what kind of paint?

Hope im not just posting to myself in this thread   :sad1:

Try putting some heat reflective tape on the lower side of the shield. It will help reduce the heat a little further.

You can tell I've been looking at options for this for a while

Cheers Hurdy, some interesting options on that site, pricey though.

Would love some of that tape that jonny used on his but seen it on ebay and its expensive  :surprised:

How hot approx do you think the actual intake pipe gets? thinking of paint for this, most rate upto 500deg, this enough?

The intake side is the cool side of the turbo and so shouldn't get too hot. If you are wanting to put a shield around the turbo as well, then you are looking at shielding radiated heat from a turbo that can run at very high temps on the hot exhaust side. I doubt that the radiated heat would be over 500 degrees C though.

There are also some other options on the link below

Right, the shield is now made and fits a treat, only made it out of mild steel though, so thinking i need to get some stainless though, although i may well just double skin what i have then use some sort of heat reflecting material.

Pictures to follow

Thats my card mock up, but i wanted to extend it a bit and saw no reason not to so got to work and made it out of metal;

Not a bad effort at all that :happy2:

You should be fine with a little extra heat wrap or paint to stop any rust on the mild steel.

I wasnt really that happy with it so i double skinned it tonight, its much better now! Also polished the top of it

Just waiting for the intake to get here then going to order some heat wrap, found this site which looks good http://www.nimbusmotorsport.com/index.asp

Need to pick up some nice bolts for it too, maybe even a little design on the top, any ideas? could put the design on the intake tube aswell as i have some plans for that when it gets here.

Anyone got any pics of the front plastic bit which encloses the cone?

I bought a chopped engine cover that fits with the EVOM's intake. Looks better than leaving the engine exposed :happy2:

Looks really good. I'm using the one with the neuspeed intake, I might have to invest in some of that heat shielding stuff!
