Title: To Colour code or not to colour code.. That is the question.
Post by: Wragg on August 10, 2013, 11:31:37 pm
Hey All...

I'm in a bit of a dilemma on wether to colour code the skirts n rear Lower bumper on my GTI...
Now owning a mk4 anniversary for the last 4 years, I always thought why did vw let out the mk5s looking like they haven't been finished, having all that black plastic trim on show....
If I was ever to get a mk5 (I have and love it) I would defiantly get it colour coded..
Now the red, black, white, blue ones really suit having the colour coding done, I have the steel grey and for some reason I think the black plastic suits the steel grey..!!!

Am i loosing it, and should I be getting it "finished off"..? I've had a look at the colour thread steel grey section to try and find pics of grey GTIs the have been painted up, but it seems to be ones with the ed30 or 32 trim..

If you don't mind throwing some pics of you STEEL GREY GTIs either colour coded or not colour coded.. That will help the decision (I've even asked the wife)..

I personally think colour coded the top section of the lower rear bumper looks best.

Can then do the same with the front lip, leaving the centre section black, and the side skirts black also.

Looked better before imo. Makes the rear look too fat when colour coded. I think I'm in a minority of one when I say this, but so what.

How did you get the lower part black? Did you just ask them to paint it or what? It looks amazing! I want to do that on mine :D

Been quoted £240 to have what you've had done, is that a good price? Thats for the exhaust surround to be done in gloss black, not left un painted though

thanks everyone I'm pleased with it as well glad I went for the black recess as well too Edition 30 other wise that's why the side skirts will be staying black
don't get me wrong I'd love an E30 but don't want a looky likely

the black lower is recessed on the gti lower valance so he either  didn't paint it of more likely repainted it black after painting the whole thing white

240 is top money for only the bottom half or are you getting other bits done as well

I have a 1.9tdi so im gonna buy a GTI valance then have him paint the upper parts grey and the exhaust recess gloss black. £240 just for that, reckon its a good price?

What would be the cost of this normally then? And how long would it take?

Post by: Vish8895 on August 22, 2013, 08:42:07 pm
What do you mean normally? If you mean just one whole color, i got quoted £190 by the same people who quoted me £240 for dual color.

Post by: cuprajake on September 06, 2013, 07:20:59 am
240 is expensive

The jobs not a quick one. The plastic needs a good 180 then plastic adhesions promoter followed by high build primer. Plus you can't bake plastics due to melting lol

Yeah thats pretty much the way he explained it! Decided against it for now at least :/. Will wait until it starts to bug me haha

I NEED TO DO THIS!... Not sure how it will look on Red! Gamble!

Post by: Vish8895 on September 08, 2013, 10:20:02 pm
You're right! Red is a gamble! They guy who i spoke to explained to me that due to the material being plastic the colour match wont be great in most colours! And I see what he means, my car has body coloured bumper strips from factory and they look slightly different. Only to me though as i know. And i reckon it will be the same if you go red at the back, ive chosen to leave mine for now :/

That does look sweet! Thats what i was gonna do to my grey golf, but after seeing a few colour coded in real life i noticed they werent always 100%! Due to the plastic again :(

Depends. Some plastics do through the colour off it tends to beheavy mmetallic colours really

We always do the top and bottom of the bumper for colour match

Why dont you just plastidip it?
Title: Re: To Colour code or not to colour code.. That is the question.
Post by: Scottymon on September 09, 2013, 05:49:53 pm
Think the skirts need doing too ala Ed.30 if you do, it's more balanced that way.

.

Plastidip isn't a bad idea, at least you get a rough idea how it will be without a permanent alteration.

Rear bumper can be done to great effect with plastidip can even gloss it now.

Post by: kahunajb on September 09, 2013, 07:41:51 pm
Definitely need to do my rear valance leaving the bottom part black but cant decide whether to do the skirts as well. I'm not sure if it will make it look like a poor man's Edition 30. Thoughts?

Think it looks awesome on the candy white GTI with the side skirts black still but mine's laser blue.

Slightly off topic anyone know any decent body shops in the Leeds/West Yorkshire area?

That looks much better colour coded. It looks like it those cheap cars that they try to save some money by finishing with plastic and saving money by not painting.
