Title: Audi S5 4.2 V8
Post by: J400uk on March 20, 2016, 06:20:33 pm
So I fancied a little toy to go with my GTD, and decided it was about time to scratch that V8 itch....

Always wanted one since they came out when I was still at school. Completely different to drive compared to anything I've had before, feels a lot heavier but the soundtrack is awesome and quattro grip insane! Quite a nice spec with Black leather, MMI DVD Nav, Bluetooth, Cruise, Keyless and all the usual toys. No mods planned yet apart from giving it a general tidy up and some TLC

Can't beat the sound of a V8, such a nice noise. Tempted to remove a silencer or fit an aftermarket exhaust?

Gorgeous car, wanted one myself and had lined up insurance etc. to change over but just couldn't do it in the end with that tax bracket!

How are you finding it after settling in?

Thanks for all the comments. I’ve had it just coming up to 3-months now and covered about 2000 miles. I’ve only taken it into the office a handful of times, most of that has been on weekend adventures. It’s been to various car shows, a couple of PistonHeads Sunday Services and up Santa Pod. Hoping to take it to the Nürburgring next!

It is at its best either as a relaxing GT Cruiser on the motorway or been hustled along the back roads. The Quattro really comes into its own in the latter and allows you to take corners at speeds I wouldn’t dare in the Golf. In case of the former it is extremely comfortable to travel in and very refined with the V8 just purring away in the background. Where it’s not so good is for town driving, as it’s just a little too heavy and not quite responsive enough at low speeds to really enjoy.

In terms of modifications I’ve mainly been concentrating on tidying it up a little, replaced a couple of trims and changed various fluids along with the odd VCDS tweak. Unlike the Golfs I haven’t really felt the urge to retrofit anything to this as it’s so generously equipped to start with.  The exhausts do seem a very popular mod on these and would make certainly make it sound even more awesome! However, I’d worry it would take away from its subtleness/ Q-car ability and possibly restrict the resale market.

Sadly I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be keeping it as I can’t really justify running this alongside the GTD permanently. Due to the miles I cover I need the sensible diesel for work.  So I’m toying with the idea of moving this on and then replacing my GTD with the new A5 when it launches next year. That in 3.0 TDI 290 Quattro Tiptronic form could be the ultimate of both worlds...

Nice car mate - I've been toying with the idea to own one of these 'on the side' as well - especially since the price has come down to a reasonable level.

What colour is your interior just out of curiosity? And is the red one an S5 too?

What sort of price would you be looking for this if you did sell it? What's the mileage on it?

And yes I agree - keep it standard.

Black leather, nice and easy to live with! The Red one in photo is just a 2.0 TFSI but it looks more aggressive I think. Facelift S-Line with a bit of spec

Took it to Goodwood FOS last weekend and thought it could do with a little decoration...

also replaced the OE discs and pads with Brembos - quite impressed with the improvement in braking performance!

Do you think the performance is due to a better pad/disc, or were your old ones in dire need of swapping out?

I had the same caliper setup on my S4 and found it wanting...badly, but then they were older discs and pads that I just chucked when I put the new setup on.
Considering going back to the original brakes to be honest, were you just using standard Brembo items?

^Not sure but one of my old pads was worn so thought I'd just swap the whole lot out. Standard Brembo items yeah. Feels much more progressive compared to the slight on/ off feel it had before!

Loving the S5, mate had one with a carpristo (spelling?) exhaust and my god did that make an amazing noise. He's just chopped it in for an A45 AMG.

Seem to be quite an underrated car, perhaps given the V8 not many bother, but certainly a car i want to own in the future....or a V8 M3  :happy2:

I sold it in the end last month, great car but couldn't really justify the running costs alongside the GTD. Would definitely recommend though

I'm now looking at getting a used BMW 640d next year to replace both, S5 performance with sensible mpg hopefully!

Have you got the BMW 640d yet Julian?

Nope, I still can't decide what to get next. Currently looking at either a Golf R, S3 or M135i. But we'll see

Funnily enough 'my' S5 is now back up for sale again for the third time this year, seems the new owner is getting rid already - http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/audi/s5/audi-s5-fsi-4-2-v8-quattro-tiptronic-2008/6356740

Sorry didn't see your reply earlier!

Wow that's a nice selection of cars to be picking from - the next step for me hopefully will be a Golf R (many years away though!).
