Right this has been annoying me for some time so decided to do something about it.(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F%5Bimg+width%3D768+height%3D1024%5Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fuu121%2Fasdaasbo%2FImage041.jpg&hash=45d98a13e8029f37bea382c0a89b2375eb8caff1)[/img](https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fuu121%2Fasdaasbo%2FImage041.jpg&hash=30053b88f8823cf65bf3f5db9f2c7fe5d5f8f136)
As you can see the rust has gotten out of hand. I hate getting my car looking good and then seeing this. The car is less than a year old and the stealer was less than sympathetic about it. All new cars rust, my arse!
So took wheel off and set to with a fine wire brush and some fine grade sand paper.(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F%5Bimg+width%3D768+height%3D1024%5Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fuu121%2Fasdaasbo%2FImage038.jpg&hash=ac6a0a72201c340e3bb210531b22b142d697a6c4)[/img](https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fuu121%2Fasdaasbo%2FImage038.jpg&hash=7ef9ec25c39f4b0e6b8ca4bc4361dfa3c3df2556)
Good chance to give the alloys a decent wash

This worked really well. Next i painted it with hammerite metal silver paint. The colour match is really good with the monzas

-
^^^Can't see any pics but I really wish I'd gone for the silver paint too. The satin black did not like to stick to the hubs or anything other than my hands! :ashamed:
-

would have looked even better if you polished up the calipers

try using a brush !!!!!!
I did! One stroke would put the paint on and another would take it all off again! I ended up getting a spray version but then I had to wrap the brakes, discs, etc to stop everything else being sprayed. The problem was then it wouldn't dry quick enough. The can says touch dry after fifteen minutes but I swear even thirty mins later it was still flippin wet!
-
Very cherry, get it done early. Rust came off quite easily with fine wire brush and helps get in the grooves next to the brake disk. The tougher bits just rub gently with fine sand paper. Took about forty mins per wheel start to finish.
Stealthwolf, can't recommend the hammerite stuff enough. Sell it in halfrauds for around a fiver. I used a pencil brush tp paint it on with and it bonded really well, plus the small brush helps prevent over painting onto other precious areas. Was dry enough to put the wheel back on after 10 mins.

That's the stuff I used.
I really think it was down to the fact I went for a 'satin black' rather than any other colour and the glossy effect meant it didn't work as well as the other paints.
-
Your probably right. If it's a black finish you require, maybe due to black alloys, mayben paint it with the silver as a primer then paint over with the black. It'll bond better to another paint rather than metal.
-
how long does the hammerite last want to paint mine but im a very hard driver and dont want it to peel bk off due to heat build up plus im using ferrodo ds2500 pads and there rather dusty pads
-
Do it properly and do two coats and it will last for years
-
sounds good i'l have to remove the discs and spray them can't stand brush marks
-
Had some new rear discs a while back and sprayed them with BBQ paint which was the same colour as my BBS wheels still looking good after a few months.
Need to do the new slotted front's but their fitted so a bit more of a job but worth it. :happy2:
