I have done some mods today on the R, not happy with the fact you can not spec the covered cup holder i set about doing it myself, not an easy job but well worth it :happy2:
As it was

Then i also added the rear cup holder as again that's not an option either , i will be adding the covered stowage area in the front also but i am waiting on a special edition piano black lid to suit the other R trim :happy2:, i will also have to plug my local TPS vag parts center in Nottingham (bit thx to Chungster for pointing me in there direction), brilliant next day service, they even had some of the stuff the same day, all genuine vw parts with discount too :happy2: , oh i also ordered the Audi S3 jack point rubbers, but one part is on back order so will be adding these later
Before

Nice little touches shaun! ;)

Fantastic mate,
I'd never given that sort of mod much thought, its only when you consider what good value the rocco is that you realise that they have saved quite a bit of cash on the Roc.
Items like this are a good example - dont get me started on the missing gas strut on the bonnet!!

I thought the missing gas strut was due to the fact the bonnet is bigger therefore heavier, i never thought of it as money saving, in that case i wonder if i can retrofit one
-
I dont buy the bigger bonnet for one second! its all Money saving gone too far if you ask me! its a Rocco, and it should have a gas strut. Major boo boo in my book.
If you really wanna see a big bonnet, and I mean big, like a work of art.......
.... have a look at this!
*balls, two mins*
here we go...
THIS....is a big bonnet!!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.miglior.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fdetailed%2F528%2Fresize%2FIMG_0202sm.jpg&hash=c87f5deed454de404cf642948e6222780b1cc267)
And this gets struts!

the bigger bonnet theory was my own LOL, nobody told me that

Gas Strut i've thought about but looking at the bonnet some bracket welding is gonna have to be done for it to work. hmmm.

they are DANGEROUSLY close to me LOL, top company very helpful and very interested in my car

dont get me started on the missing gas strut on the bonnet!!
I asked about the elusive gas strut when at the Autostadt in Wolfsburg back in 2008, first time i'd seen a Roc in the flesh and was surprised to see a manual strut too! They helpfully fetched a technical bod who explained it was purely down to crash performance/pedestrian safety, apparently something to do with the the size constraints under the hood and some other technical things that i have now forgotten
I did also find reference to this being the reason somewhere else so will try and dig it out

Nice touches Shaun! :happy2:
I presume you had to change that whole transmission tunnel cover to get the slidey slidey tray?

No you only need to change the actual cup holder :happy2:, its screwed in underneath and you slide it out when screws are undone, it does mean either removing the whole tunnel or at least moving it into a position where you can get access to the screws and remove the old holder

Nicely done. A bit silly you can't spec those things in the first place. Looks easy enough to do.

LOL, if only
To be fair most of it was ok, the hardest bit was the center console would not come out due to the shift stick still being in (i read on Elsa that you should not remove the DSG shift, it didnt say why though but i didnt want to risk it), so i had to remove the old cup holder whilst still and whilst still facing downwards, then i lost a screw which i hate doing so i pulled the carpets out to get it , after that the only other issue was the side bottom pieces which i was sure was not going in correctly, but it appears thats how they fit !
-
No having stripped one of these down with Steve I can confirm the word easy wasn't used much!

LOL, tbh if the handbrake would disconnect easily at the base it would have been fine, it doesn't though

Thats a great mod, but one that shouldn't need doing in the first place! VW costcutting gone mad. Can I ask how you got hold of your car so quickly? as my Dad has got a 'rocco R on order, and has been since mid December '09!!! he still has no build date either. VW are loaning him a car until it arrives as he sold his part ex privately, due to them constantly reducing the px value as time went on!
-
i was lucky mine arrived 3 months after ordering.
many others are in same boat as your dad's. major DSG box supply issue at the mo.
and yes shame on VW cutting out the simple niceties that were in the Mk5 GTI but NOT on the top of range Rocco R. I was not amused!!!

That would make sense then, as he has ordered a DSG!!
-
And the covered stowage part came, now has piano black lid to match the rest of the cars bits inside, i still have my silver lid just in case i dont get use to it LOL
How it was

Does the shiny black plastic attract dust and scratches very easily?
-
Does the shiny black plastic attract dust and scratches very easily?
its not actually plastic, its metal with what im told is a strip of wood thats had the piano black treatment, hence the bloody silly price :jumping: , anyway to your question if its anything like the rest of the piano black bits then it does attract a bit of dust but its not bad and a microfibre wipe over sorts it in seconds :happy2:
-
Gloss black wrap also is a much cheaper option

i Prefer real though :happy2:

Gloss black does look good on the centre consol :happy2:

yes it does from the pics !, perhaps i should put an R logo there, or maybe buy the other surround LOL, mind you thats an even bigger void then
-
Personally think it looks a bit odd. :stupid:
-
Pictures are not doing it justice TBH
-
Like that a lot Shaun! :happy2:
-
Shaun, why dont you start a proper thread in members rides for all your mods and photo's, instead of bits here and there in the random section, which will be lost forever. :happy2:

Yes I keep meaning too but have never got round to it, plus it's not a golf either !

We have all sorts of junk in that section so a Rocco won't look out of place
We even let joesgti post in there and his cars more of a bundle of sticky tape and cable ties
