Title: Marticus' Red GTI
Post by: Marticus on November 16, 2022, 12:49:54 pm
Hi Guys, I figured I would start a little thread for my new project.

The plan for this is for it to be a good all-rounder, that will let me ferry the kids to school a couple of times a week and do some track days on the weekend.

Nothing too extreme is on the cards, a general tidy up, some exterior mods, maybe some weight reduction where possible without sacrificing the livability, some handling upgrades, and a little bump in power eventually. But for now, i'm starting with the basics.

A few pictures of the starting point:

ive made the first of many changes to come, whilst not a mod this an upgrade for me, its time to de-chrome.

Look at this nastyness, what was the last owner thinking!

(https://i.postimg.cc/JzfKbWKT/547196-C5-9-BA2-422-A-8-CE4-0-B589-C3704-D2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/18KpQ2k6)

So the first thing i did was order some low profile number plate holders, i found some with a red pinstripe which i though would fit ok without being too obnoxious.

Old v new

And fitted to the car

(https://i.postimg.cc/3RTkjts5/36317-FA9-445-E-4030-BF9-B-DD0037929-CCF.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Y4d2Mz2b)

Only a small change, but a big difference to my eyes.

Next in relation to this im going to try and find a red GTI badge for the front. Im not sure what to do about the VW badges yet, the back needs to be replaced because the previous owner painted it black with a brush by the looks of it.. but im undecided where to go with that, i saw a nice example where someone colored behind the badge to match the body and then had dark badges, maybe ill try that, either way TBC..

Whew what a rollercoaster of a day. Took the car out to collect the kids and the check engine oil light came on.  level was still above minimum on the dipstick, but when i got back and checked the garage floor sure enough somethings been leaking fml.

So now i need to pick up some oil, top it up a bit and keep a close eye on things untill i can get to VW next week. Ill try and see if i can find the source of the leak in the meantime.

I swear ive got absolute crap luck buying cars, but im in this for the long haul so whatever she needs she will get.

On the other end of the rollercoaster these arrived today

Theyre pretty light so eventually they will be my trackday wheels i guess, but they conveniently came with a set of winter tyres on them, so they may be getting put on sooner..

No updates on the car today, but a funny anecdote.

Before I bought this car, I had been keeping my nose to the ground for something interesting to buy and one of the cars that kept catching my eye was the last gen celica, I was always a fan of jap cars, but what put me off is that they're very expensive over here in LHD land.

So anyhow I'm driving home with my daughter and what do we roll up behing at the lights, but a nice looking last gen celica with the TRD body kit and spoiler and huge exhaust, all the rest.

Of course my daughter is immediately smitten, and when I told her that was the other car I was thinking of buying she was very disappointed that I hadn't bought the sleek sports car with the big wing on the back.

To add fuel to the fire, the other driver had obviously noticed us looking at the car and given us a few revs as well.

So feeling suitably challenged by my daughters lack of faith and the other driver, when we moved off the celica promptly realised what a difference the extra few hp and huge amount of extra torque makes in the golf.

And so my ego is soothed and purchasing decision justified, only problem is now my daughter want to put a big spoiler on the back of the golf  I did explain to her that they don't really work on hatchbacks, but she remains adament.

Unfortunately after the swap there seems to be a lot if noise, not sure if its just tyre noise or something else. No vibration, and i double checked that everything is torqued to spec. So will see

Nice looking Golf.
Are the new wheels much bigger than original ones?
Bigger wheels are really good for highlighting bush wear - try to work out what direction the noise is coming from will help locate the wear

Thanks for the suggestion, yeah they've gone from a 17 x 7.5 to 18 x 8 with a lower offset, it seems like the worst of the noise if front right, but did have a suspension refresh with new wishbones at the beginning of the year

Just another thing for VW to check next week when it goes in.

Out of interest I weighed the old and new wheels with tyres on my bathroom scales, old came in at 19.8kg and the new 19.4, not bad considering the size difference I think.

Most likely it is the control arm console bush.
Yes - not much difference in weight, but that weight is pushed further out

Got the car back from VW this morning and am £400 lighter in the wallet.

Good bews is that the gearbox is fine, after the service and adaptations reset it seems to be running smoother and according to the mechanic theres nothing to worry about there, so happy days!

And the additional road noise i was hearing was just down to the winter tyres that came on the wheels, they will be going once spring comes around, so no worries there either, bushing and bearings are all good.

On the flip side, the diagnostics checks bought up a few other issues,

The timing is noisy, and will need replacing according to them, which is odd to me as according to the logbook it was changed at 140k (30k km ago), but i may get it done to be safe as im not certain the history is kosher.

The DMF is rattling when cold, nothing to worry about yet.

They couldnt find the source if the leak (im not sure how hard they looked) but i need to get that checked again, they cleaned the underside and asked me to go back after a few hundred miles to see..

Lastly a couple of errors appeared relating to the intake flaps again nothing urgent from my understanding..

So now im looking forwards and i need some advise from you guys on future mods.

Firstly regarding the things above, if im going to be doing work in relation to thise problems are there any upgrades to consider? For example i know there are flap delete kits, which i guess i can do if im going to be there anyway. But in relation to the dmf for example?

For the more fun stuff my plan is to put maybe £1500 towards some mods in the next year with the focus on doing some track time next year, but im unsure where best to focus my efforts. Can anyone with track time experience chime in with the major weakpoints to consider? I hear the brakes will need some work and there are a few s3/r32 upgrades for sale, but im seeing mixed reviews on that.

Im also thinking about suspension, but with an eye on handling as opposed to looks, so would a decent set of shocks / springs be a better option than budget coilover? Im guessing yes..

Thanks in advance!

Probably the timing belt was changed before and they are suggesting the camshaft chain on the gearbox side that is needing replacement.

Suspension is really subjective - you need to realistically look at how you will be using the Golf - if you go too much track bias it will make road driving miserable - Bilstein B6 seem to be the sweet spot for most

Good point! I'll need to double check, it's painful because I'm an English man dealing with Polish mechanics and a German logbook, so theres room for error in translation

I was looking at bilstein b12, but at about £900 over here it's a hard sell considering some respected coil overs aren't much more expensive, and some 'adequate' brands like St, and AP are much cheaper.

The cars does need to be road use able and the roads here aren't that great, just want to see where I can give myself a bit of a helping hand on track days.

Thanks for the help.

Not an exciting update today, but a funny story in a fml kinda way.

So today I'm another £600 lighter in the wallet after getting the timing chain tensioner etc replaced. Good news is that the cars running a lot quieter and seems to have found a bit of power.

Bad news is that on the test drive I noticed that the tempurature gauge (which always sat steady just below 90) dipped down to 80 during the drive before going back up.

I didn't think much of it at the time, but about half an hour ago I went to fill up on fuel, and the tempurature sat on 0 for ages, then all of a sudden when I stopped at some lights it climbed to 90, and then dropped down to 80, and after filling with fuel its now firmly stuck back on. 0.

So it's back to the mechanic to see if he's missed something when he was doing his work, otherwise I guess a new thermostat is next on the list.. Eyy

To celebrate having a fresh timing chain, or to console meself for having a broken thermostat (not sure which) i decided to spend some more money on the golf and the first frw bits arrived today.

First a new keyring, because why not i guess

Next new bulbs and lamp switch which was worn out completely.

Old switch was wrecked

New one is so much better, made a huge difference to the interior.

Ill be replacing the bulbs later, the previous owner had swapped one out when it died i guess and now they dont match.

How is it that VW engineers can design a light switch that i can change out with a press and a twist in 20 seconds, but you have to be some kind of contortionist with salad fingers to change out thenpoxy bulbs.

Anyway bulbs are changed i took some pics but theyre so crappy you probably wont see a difference, but to me they look much better now.

boot struts are fitted, another easy job there. Thanks VW engineers!.

Also had lots of fun with the badge, which turned into its own mini project.

Firstly i had to remove the grill from the car, and then remove the old badge from the grill.

Looking at the old and new side by side theyre exactly the same size:

(https://i.postimg.cc/G2qKDS8z/A5-E7-DF7-F-EF8-A-4-BE9-9738-E55-F66-D3-E98-E.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/7GJS89NT)

Unfortunately the method of fitting them to the grill is completely different on the back:

(https://i.postimg.cc/4nC9Hz5B/9-E1-DDA54-2-E43-4749-81-D3-03-AFF75-DDE86.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/JHqn9HSk)

Fortunately the letters themselves are only stuck onto the backing plate with adhesive, so a bit of work with a stanly blade gets them off:

(https://i.postimg.cc/prPdwqsN/20951-BFE-CF0-A-40-C3-8-CFB-9-FDB0-BD141-DD.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/1nYP6cxM)

I cleaned up the old base before putting on the new letters:

(https://i.postimg.cc/wTyK6DZn/F08-BC99-D-5-DB1-4-F40-8764-7979-C58-A2-E73.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/8jSX4f1b)

And usednsome spray adhesive on the back of the letters before clamping them to the base to dry:

(https://i.postimg.cc/02DsYpnD/3-C32-AEE3-F2-F1-4-F36-A18-D-BCBD7-BDC06-C1.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/TpdFG5Z3)

Whilst i was waiting for the glue to go off i cleaned up the grill a bit and finally after a lot of clean up on the badge because spray glue is messy, i refitted the badge to the grill:

(https://i.postimg.cc/WbX7fy5v/50-D74-E69-EB45-4912-B897-D8-D298-E738-BC.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/tYnPsB0S)

And thats it, fun little project and a nice change for an hour or so worth of work. I will eventually repaint the entire grill in gloss black and maybe change out the big vw badge as im slowly dechroming as much as i can, but for now im happy.

Ramair induction kit and h&r coilovers, i hadnt planned on spending this much money so fast, but i bought the coilovers open box for under €600 so they were hard to pass up.

I might have a go at fitting the induction kit myself, but will probably need some help with the coilovers so they can wait, also going to double check the suspension and see if anything else needs replacing while im there..

Cars back at the mechanic today for new belt, waterpump, thermostat, cam follower, evap valve, and bonnet strut.

So seeing as im spending all my money on mechanical bits i decided to have a go at painting the lip myself. If i make a mess of it i can always take it to the body shop to be fixed, and if it works out maybe ill have a go at painting some other bits.

So today i ordered some paint, and started preperation.

Firstly i lightly went over the lip with some 120grit, then wiped everything off with some paint thinner, before realising that it also thins ABS  so finished cleanup with water and towels.

Then started with some primer i had left over from previous projects. Problem was that the first couple of cans were pretty old, and ended up leaving a sh*tty finish, the third tin worked better but is orange for some reason.

(https://i.postimg.cc/4xP6X7xq/FC45482-F-0-B71-4-DFD-B316-CEC6077-BD4-A4.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/zyLbjfWF)

So tomorrow ill be cleaning up the garage and hitting it again with some sandpaper to knock down the bad bits and get it prepped for the last primer and color/clear.

Im still trying to decide if i should do the lower center section in black or red..

Just had a call from the mechanic, and it looks like the alternator is going to need replacing, along with some fitting in the fuel system, and the engine cover is f*cked, the joys of owning older cars.

So I figured I would take a minute to list what's been done, and is yet to do.

Done:
Dsg service
Cam chain set
Cam belt
Water pump
Thermostats
All filters
Cam follower
EVAP system valve (p90 I think..)
Boot struts
Bonnet strut
Bulbs
Headlight switch

To do:
Fuel system connector
Alternator
Charcoal canister
Divertor valve
Fit induction kit
Fit suspension
Buy and fit better brakes
Radio upgrade

Probably lots more...

Looks quite daunting written down like that, and funds are running low. But at least she will be running well once I'm done.

Some good news is that the paint for the front lip has arrived, so hopefully later I will be able to find some time to work on that. Need to pick up some higher grit sand paper and solvent free cleaner for wiping everything down.

Ehh this cars starting to twist my tits now.

Picked up the car today after the mechanic finished the latest lot of work, and drove it to the petrol station to refuel (after the fuel fitting failed and dropped a load of fuel over the garage floor), and on the way home figured o would stretch her legs to see if everything felt OK, when poof. No power, engine revving not going anywhere, popping from under the hood.

Got back to the garage, and turns out that the intercooler hose has popped off, and the metal parts on the hose have stripped so it won't hold properly to the cooler .

So popped it back on and drove home very carefully.

Now I'm a bit stuck for next steps, because I had planned on eventually going for an s3 intercooler anyway, which means I would have to cut the ends off the hoses if I understand correctly, or replace them with s3 ones. Either way there's not much point in spending money on new hoses for the standard cooler if I'm going to replace / cut them up in the foreseeable future.

The other consideration is with the noise pipe, because my car is LHD I assume it has a noise pipe, and if I decide to get rid of it I would need the s3 piping right?

So does anyone know if the s3 piping is a straight fit to the engine side of our fsi engines? I assume yes..

Decided to turn my frustration today into something more positive, so spent some time on the front lip.

Its not finished yet, but progress so far goes like this:

After the last update, i wet sanded everywhere with some 600 grit, and hit it with a couple of coats of the new primer.

(https://i.postimg.cc/kg62fKQV/C5656449-19-DF-48-DD-A743-34-CF0-E67-B044.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/xXQjdkFY)

Then once that had dried i sprayed the first coat of black, which came out far too thick and ran everywhere. So after some cleanup and another light sanding, i got the black down if not perfect at least ok.

(https://i.postimg.cc/XJFh8HJ2/3-C709-F81-B27-E-4302-9551-3-EAAF8877612.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/WFNXp70r)

And lastly tonight i masked off the center section and got the red down which went on easier than the black thankfully.

(https://i.postimg.cc/d14CzvLD/22-B5-F026-48-A7-4-EDE-9-CA4-F56-DF72-A448-E.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/DJ4mX9QK)

And thats where im leaving it tonight, tomorrow ill start the clearcoat and prayni dont make a mess of it.

Its not perfect by any means and ive now idea how good the color match will be, but i think its ok, a damn site better than the unpainted black lip thats on there now anyway

Got the laquer onnthis morning and offered the splitter up to the car today. The colour match is .. not good. But maybe it will improve after a polish. I dont have the heart to repaint it now so it will have to do.

Now i just have to get it fitted.

Fitted the front lip today, and as a good friend once said about his ex, its nice from afar, but far from nice.

If funds allow i may get it painted proffessionally, but it will do.

Today ive also ordered an s3 intercooler, and som 3m interior wrap. Im trying to de-chrome the car, and whilst the silver isnt chrome i want to tone it down a bit anyway, but i didnt want to do carbon as its been done loads, so i picked up some dark brushed aluminium look, hopefully it will look half decent.

If anyones done it before, let me know if you managed it with the trim in place of if its better to remove it first.

Im pretty happy with that, looks OEM but less shiny which was my goal. Unfortunately i ordered the wrong dimensions and the peice i have isnt long enough for the door cards, but i will use this for the smaller bits, and do the rest later.

Just for some practice and a bit of fun i thought i wouldtry and wrap one of the grotty old door handle / switch consoles, this will be getting replaced anyway but it was a good way to learn what works and what doesnt.

S3 intercooler arrived today, and this will probably be the last big purchase for a while,

I had planned on maybe stage 2, but repairs have eaten into that budget now, intake, intercooler, and coil overs is a good start though I think. I'm still considering options for brakes as well, as that's probably most important for track time

Tonights victim of wrapping was the gear shift surround.

I started this with the intention of getting rid of as much silver as possible, but when i looked at the trim and saw hiw scratched it was i decided that should be done.

(https://i.postimg.cc/B6qHvHj4/FFCE8-FDE-3432-41-AA-BBA4-84-B60-D11-DCC5.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/4KSmLKvS)

And of course as soon as i started washing it, i ended up with this:

(https://i.postimg.cc/Nj6KrLqM/F437-DD6-D-4-D5-F-4415-B2-A4-7840128-F012-B.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/TKPdzdPM)

And after 20 minutes with the hairdryer and razerblade this is what im left with

(https://i.postimg.cc/GtDy7QNP/01552-DD2-1273-4-C27-8266-54-B94-C6-ABA85.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/BPqbtxJt)

Its far from perfect, there are a few bubbles and around the gear indicator letters is still a mess and will need some more work, but its an improvement.

The only question now is what to do with the silver trim that i was supposed to be getting rid of.

Maybe carbon wrap, or just matt black paint. Not sure yet, if anyone has a suggestion let me know.

Spent a couple more hours on the car today,

Finished wrapping the silver trim:

And start refitting everything to the car:

And finally dragged the car out of the garage to get a look at the front lip in the daylight.

As you can see now the color match sucks, im liking the look but it will need repainting and color matching properly at some point.

Tomorrow off to the mechanic again for the new alternator and a few other small bits and then im really hoping she will be solid.

Today i gave the car a quick rinse off at the jetwash, and noticed that there was some rust on the exhaust tips, so i spent a couple of hours this evening with my fingers deep up a backbox…

Stupidly i didnt get a before picture so youll have to take my word for it when i say it was rough.

This was after washing and scrubbing with a course scrubbing pad.

(https://i.postimg.cc/J0xdjPS1/7391-E591-EAE9-4-B43-8-DAB-E76140-CF32-B3.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/fS3KNjwF)

And i attempted to finish it there with some polish on a fine pad but realised i hadnt got a lot of the corrosion.

(https://i.postimg.cc/fbd28w1q/0-BA6-EBB7-D1-A7-42-DD-8348-A40871-FE8-D34.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/jWs45rxy)

So out came the sand paper, starting at 320 grit.

(https://i.postimg.cc/HLrt8wnQ/98-B807-CE-F8-E3-43-FF-91-A5-43-CE6-A5-B2366.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/4KTcrhzd)

And working my way through 600, 1k, 2k, and some polish.

(https://i.postimg.cc/Gm5FR4K9/00-A5-C41-B-FE43-49-F9-92-EB-717-A28-EA80-C8.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/68C2L5DN)

They still dont look great, theres some corrosion that even the 320 wouldnt get out, so ill keep an eye on it but for now its better, if not perfect.

Now i got to deal with the mess

Decided i needed some me time in the garage last night, had planned to spend an hour doing some tidying up and bits and bobs, but 4 hours later i ended up with the induction kit fitted

I also removed the under bonnet insulation, because i though i might want the extra noise. How wrong i was, this thing is obnoxiously loud lol.

I was really not prepared for what a difference this would make, it sounds like that hoover from the teletubbies has moved in under the bonnet.

I have the same intake lmao

How do you like it?

I was a bit unsure the first time I went out for a drive, but I'm actually quite enjoying it now. I think it might be a bit jarring for me if this was my daily driver, but it's a lot of fun getting on and off the gas and hearing the turbo spool.

My line of credit is running out fast but this needs doing sooner or later.

New dmf.

Ive also picked up a set of s3 340mm brake calipers, which are on the way.

So next up is discs, pads, fluid, then some new tyres, some bits and bobs for the suspension.

And the alternator needs replacing at some point…. Oh and the dreaded p099 underboost error as shown up again, so maybe a new turbo…

damn, who knew project cars are so expensive

Recently I realised that the brakes I bought had rust on the bolts.

Nothing terrible, but I figured there was no point in leaving it to spread under the nice new powder coat.
So tore them down and gave the bolts a soak overnight in rust converter.
Then scrubbed them down to remove any loose surface rust before putting them back in the rust converter for a fer more hours.
Lastly I cleaned them off with white spirit before giving the heads a coat of zinc primer.
I had previously don't the same to the brackets for the back of the calipers.

(https://i.postimg.cc/zD4YWYXv/IMG-20230430-205401.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/3Wjq56GQ)

Next up is to repeat the process with the threads in the calipers themselves, to make sure there's no rust sitting.

Also on Tuesday I've got new tyres arriving, so will sent those along with the wheels for fitting and balancing etc.

And later in the week I have a buddy from England arriving to help me fitting the suspension, brakes, and maybe intercooler and some other small bits and pieces depending on how long it all takes.

May also try to whip off the turbo and see if anything can be done about the underboost error.

It's going to be a busy week!

Started to tidy the garage and get everything out in preperation for the weekend, and its looking like a lot now its all layed out,

(https://i.postimg.cc/DwNn2wXF/IMG-0508.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Mn1h5x5r)

The new tyres arrived yesterday and i took the wherls to have the winter tyres removed, and tomorrow im taking them to a wheel shop to check because VW mentioned that one of them might not be 100% straight, so hopefully that will be sorted. Then off to the tyre shop tobhave them put together and balanced.

Also updated the to do list and its getting daunting.

(https://i.postimg.cc/DZn2NYGb/IMG-0510.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/B879LpMq)

Dont expect to have all this done this weekend, and doubt we can do the DMF in the garage even if we wanted too. So going to focus on suspension and brakes to start and see how things go.

So progress so far is that the suspension is in and is awesome!

Decided to work on the driveway because theres really not enough space in the garage.

And of course the moment we got the car up and the front dissasembled it started pissing down.

(https://i.postimg.cc/prpgkqk5/IMG-0526.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/SYbTxLBm)

In addition to the rain the tie rod ends had seized on both sides so we had to find a new pair.

But got the new struts fitted whilst we sat out the worst of the rain in the garage.

(https://i.postimg.cc/x1hhTvf9/IMG-0524.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/LJkNxZgW)

(https://i.postimg.cc/XqjDDx8k/IMG-0525.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/phSZmf3m)

And got the brake calipers back together with the newly cleaned and painted hardware.

(https://i.postimg.cc/7ZFtyq96/IMG-0527.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/4Y1Q6krk)

And at the end of the day the car is sitting pretty.

(https://i.postimg.cc/MGw0DHty/IMG-0528.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/87yrk125)

(https://i.postimg.cc/RFVckYkh/IMG-0529.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/jWmwNMdY)

(https://i.postimg.cc/mDXQBw4w/IMG-0530.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/5YzHm86Y)

I still need to adjust the height a bit and bring it up half a centimeter or so on the front, and maybe go down a bit on the rear, but all in all im super happy.

The suspension rides almost like oem, a little firmer but not bouncy or crashy, no noises coming from the suspension.

I also tried to get the tyres fitted to the alloys but everywhere was full so thats going to have to wait till monday.

Next to do are the brakes which we dodnt have time for, and an alignment.

Title: Re: Marticus' Red GTI
Post by: Marticus on May 12, 2023, 11:47:14 am
Now the suspension has settled down a bit, and after scraping the front and whacking the sump yesterday i adjusted the suspension last night and fitted the wheels and new tyres to get an idea of how everything is sitting.

(https://i.postimg.cc/Bv7N9XDH/IMG-0531.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/wtJDDxwj)

(https://i.postimg.cc/4dKPJsbM/IMG-0532.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/tZjWk0ct)

And im fairly happy. The wheels will probably come back offnintill ive had an alignment done, because i dont want to wear the new tyre in interesting ways.

But before the alighnment is done i need to replace the drivers side cv boot, and i would like to get the brake in aswell.

Once thats done ill get an alignment and try to enjoy it for a while.

The DMF will need doing also sooner than later because i want it done before any track days.

Failures, more failures, and half successes.

So decided to have a go at replacing the CV boot myself last week. Things did nit go well.

Unfortunately i didnt take any pics i just didnt have the heart for it. I managed to get everything dissassembled fine, but my first f*ckup was trying to do it in place on the car. Because when it came time to seperate the CV joint. That f*cker would not move, after an hour or so if trying to use the bolt to pushbit out, and hitting it with a hammer i finally got it apart, and of course everything went fine untill it came time to get them back together again, i dont know if im just being soft, but after another half an hour of trying to get the two halves back together i resorted to smacking it with a big f*ck off hammer untill it went into place. Then came tightening the clamps, and the cheap tool i bought was f*cking useless. Blah blah blah.

Long story short at about 1am i finally had it back together, but now i need a new axle bolt because thenone i had stripped in the process of getting the cv joint back together, hopefully im not going to have to replace the hole joint, but for now its holding together so will see.

Then today i had the good idea to remove the noise pipe from the car as i dont see the point in it, and its just taking up space in the engine bay.

In preperation for this i did some research and found that other tfsi vag cars dont have the noise pipe, so i ordered an intake pipe from an audi a3.

(https://i.postimg.cc/J4mvyfMk/IMG-0534.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/w3f0Zbtq)

Here is the twonintake pipes next to one another, as you can see the audibone doesnt have the extra exit towards the top, unfortunately you can probably se that the rest of the pipes arent an exact match either, the brackets dont line up and the angle of the top is a few degrees off.

But not to be put of i removed the brackets from the new pipe and after some messing about, and replacing the pipe from thenintercooler with another one i had bought from an audi just in case. I ended up with something that should work.

Engine bay before:
(https://i.postimg.cc/yNNLhKbD/IMG-0533.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/pmgQxwxv)

Engine bay after
(https://i.postimg.cc/HLPBBNqB/IMG-0535.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/3ymXwtJv)

And what was removed or replaced:

(https://i.postimg.cc/sXQK8cyy/IMG-0536.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/ZBmrv6CD)

The failiure here was that when i dug about behind the firewall to remove the rest of the noise maker it looks like someone had already been in there and blocked te pipe off with a nylon bung  :congrats: so all my hard work was for little difference outside of cleaning up the engine bay and a couple hundred grams of weight reduction lol.

Anyway, its good to make progress even i its two steps forward one step back.
