Like many it seems my drivers door stopped locking and unlocking with the remote or by pressing the lock button on the inside of the door. The problem started intermittently but soon became a permanent feature.
The solution is to replace the entire lock mechanism. VW quoted approx. £250 to repair. Part is approx. £75 new from the stealers.
I was very luck and managed to get a brand new one of ebay for £25!
Basically I followed the workshop repair manual found here

for the front door (57-01).
Its pretty straight forward – basically you will be removing the outer door skin to get access to the lock. Daunting as this seems I found this much easier than taking the inner door skin off.
I’ve recently moved house and can’t find the charger for my camera so unfortunately phone pics will have to do.
What you’ll need:
Door Lock – 3D2 837 016 (drivers door)
T20 Torx Driver
T30 Torx Driver / bit for ratchet.
M6 Spline
Small flat bladed screwdriver.
First order of business is to remove the black plastic strip on the inside of the door frame. Start at the bottom and gently pull the clips out. Slide your fingers up beside each clip to support it and avoid cracking the trim piece.

This exposes some of the bolts holding the door skin on and the access point to release the lock cylinder. Note the round ‘sticker’ near the top of the door: peel this back to get access inside the door with a T20 torx driver. I’d recommend a dedicated driver for this one as I don’t think anything with a thick shaft (oh er …) will work.

You have to ‘feel’ for the bolt head as there is no way to see what you’re doing.
Once you’ve found it, pull the door handle fully out and loosen the screw. DO NOT FULLY UNDO!
Periodically check the lock cylinder to see if its loose enough to pull out – the door handle will have to be pulled out to do this.

All the way out – note the orientation of the lever and make sure it goes back in this way.

Next up is to remove the handle completely. To do this use a small screwdriver to pop the little tab out as shown – this disconnects the handle from the lock mechanism.

Note that the flat side of the cable termination faces out and the ribbed side into the handle – this is important later.
With the cable disconnected its just a matter of swinging the handle out towards the front of the car completely. I found it was easier to push it into the door and slide the handle towards the back of the car slightly to clear the carrier assembly before pulling it off. Its self explanatory when you come to this.

You will have exposed a small T20 screw where the front end of the handle used to be. Take it out.
Now take out the bolts around the door skin with a T30 bit.
Take great care to note which bolts came from where as if you put them back in the wrong place you WILL cause damage to the skin.

Once all the bolts are out its just a matter of lifting the skin away from the door – doesn’t take much effort at all to remove. A couple of small ‘hooks’ on the lock carrier will be clipped to the door skin but will fall away easily once you start moving the skin from the door.

Next up is to remove the carrier – dead easy. Just undo the rubber band and slide it towards the front of the car. Done. Don’t break the rubber band …
I think its just an aid to hold the carrier in place during assembly.

The new lock won’t be supplied with this plastic cover – its just clipped on so pull towards you to remove.

Undo the electrical connection in the normal way of putting a screwdriver in the tab and pulling it away. Note that the little cable connecting the lock to the handle has to be recovered from the old lock as the new one doesn’t come with it.
Next undo the M6 Spine bolts holding the lock module to the door.

Once these are out there is a little tab on the door frame that engages with the lock unit – just slide the lock towards the front of the car and jiggle it a little bit. The tension in the interior door handle cable works against you here…

Picture above shows the ‘back’ of the lock unit and the interior handle cable going into it. Pull (or lever) the cable out of the retaining tab and disconnect the end. Its self explanatory how when you come to it.

Picture above shows the retaining tab between the two bolt holes.
Next recover the little cable for the outside handle from the old lock and put it on the new lock. Its released by rotating it and pulling the lever forward. Again self explanatory. Remember to put it on the right way on the new lock with the ribbed side ready to face into the handle and the flat side towards the barrel.

In the finest Haynes tradition, refitting is the reverse of the above.

Can't remember if it was you who I spoke to in the past about this, as mine does this about 5/6 times a month at the moment. Will use this guide when it eventually gets worse! :happy2:

It was pretty late - I wanted to write it up while it was fresh in my mind!
I think I could do it now in about an hour. Last night it probably took an hour and a half but I had to leave the job half way through for something else and then I had got the door skin back on when I noticed the white plastic cover lying on the floor :star: so had to take it all off again....
Don't be daunted about taking the door skin off. Its pretty easy and I'd much rather do this than take the inner door card off. The whole job is pretty straightforward to be honest - there isn't anything particularly tricky about it but you do need to be careful about using the right screws in the right place. You obviously need to take a bit of care with the door skin when taking it off and particularly putting it back on - a second pair of hands would be helpul but not essential.
I think I did speak to you about this and if you're in the Aberdeen area (or anyone else for that matter) at any point I'd be glad to help or give advise at any time.

Hour and a halfs very good, I'm in the Sussex area, but I'll do a print out of this as it will save a great deal of grief, plus I'm sure if the dealer did it they would somehow put something back on the pi$$. :happy2:

Great write up!
I had this issue with my passenger door a year back now and replacement lock was the only fix.
It was a little wierd - it only didn't work in warm weather. Winter was fine!

Bit of a thread hi-jack.
Fortunately it was my passenger door that was faulty. So not an immediate problem.
I did get it work again using the two man unlock bang handle technique.
The advice I was given was to remove the "hidden screws" from the door trim. So at least if everything goes wrong you can still remove the trim and open the door...
If anyone has a problem with the passenger door please pm me I have one for sale. Never fitted as the unlock bang technique cured my lock :laugh:

If it was used off ebay there is a good chance thats why it was punted on there in the first place. Does it lock manually with the key?

And this actuates the central locking? I.e the only way the central locking doesn't work is when a signal, either from the remote or the button on the drivers door is sent to it?
This being the case the door lock module is at fault. If the central locking can be activated from the lock manually there are no communication problems between it and the central convienience module. If it isn't actuating from a signal sent to it from the CCM its because the mechanism is fubard in the door lock.

Yeah I would say its worth a go. I would think if you buy it from the stealers you could return it if it doesn't work. I managed to buy a brand new one of ebay so keep an eye out. Did swither about buying a second hand one but as it seems to be a common issue thought there would be a high risk of buying someone else's problem unit.

I also put this guide together a few weeks ago and was going to include part numbers but when I looked into it the part numbers were VIN dependant. I had no trouble replacing the unit, however my rear wash wipe has stopped working.
Its not a fuse and the connector is getting power. Having tried a replacement unit its still not working so I'm starting to think it might be a coding issue.
Has anyone suffered a similar problem or could offer some advice.

The door latch on the cars can be really tricky to repair or replace. It would be best if you get it checked firstly from the dealer itself. Another thing you can do is hire an auto locksmith to troubleshoot your car's door lock module.

I dont know if this works for everyone but Ive found a workaround that works for me. Its not neat, but it works...
(Im using Google Chrome if that makes a difference)
- Right click the photo and click 'Open in New Tab' (When it opens in a new tab it will still show the Photobucket ransom message)
- Hold Ctrl & press F5 to refresh the page and once it refreshes you should be able to see said image.
Let me know if it works for you. It should even then show up in the original a normal, or at least does for me :happy2:

My drivers door lock has started sometimes not opening when i push the unlock button on the keyfob but if i push the lock button and then the unlock button it opens the drivers door lock.Thinking i might need to order a new lock ?

I had the exact same and bought a replacement lock module, front near side for me. I re-coded so that all doors unlock on a single press and by the time the module came it started to work properly and has done ever since. I've come to my own conclusion that 10+ years of the previous owner rarely unlocking anything but the drivers door caused it to be a bit sticky. Don't know how feasible that is but in any case mines been fine for over a year now!

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, it's probably all down to lack of use! My Dad used to have a nearly-new Merc and with only him using it, after a couple of years his rear electric windows seized! He wasn't happy. This would seem to me like the same sort of issue?
What is the actual bit that goes wrong? Any pics around?

I just spent all day removing the door skin to change one of the 2 faulty Lock Module on my rear doors.
One question if I may - I hadn't fully appreciated the way the lock mechanism (lock cover on rear doors) works - the bolt you have to blindly access with a thin shaft under the sticker).
As such I now I have no idea how to get the lock secure in its place again.
I can sit it in its right place but whichever way I turn the screw (and I've tried to max in both directions) it doesn't seem to secure the lock.
Any advice how to get this secure again? Many thanks in advance all

Will this guide help in doing the door lock replacement also? I know locksmith basildon (http://www.basildonlocksmiths.net/) near me who has some experience in such type of work, do i contact them for that work?

Just want to say a big thank you for the guide, helped immensely with changing the lock on a VWGolf Plus 2006, though a little longer as I had to use an angle grinder on the lock bolts having sucked in a large breath! Lost the small rubber that held the handle chassis but easily replaced.
Note that the issue was the "red" lever was not fully engaging when using the remote to lock drivers door! :P :P :P
