Title: Nodz's Laser Blue GTI - Mini Mod 1 (24/2/13)
Post by: Nodz on May 09, 2011, 08:36:56 pm
Thought it was time to start a thread especially as the list of things I'm debating of doing has quadrupled since joining here

All I've done so far is get an OEM set of 18" Monza's (refurbed at A1 and look the nuts), some open fog vents and an ipod dock instead of the CD changer. Also some GTI branded bits like seat inserts, RIchbrook GTI tax disc holder and OEM GTI mats..

Next on the list is the brakes to be done but not sure what route to go down as not sure if I plan to tune the car or leave standard power wise but they need sorting as there is apparently only 30% left in the rear pads (according to dealer when it was serviced), trouble is I keep looking at cmdrfire's brembo's and they aint cheap  :scared: lol

After this its cruise control as a definite.. Then I'm looking at getting the head unit done not sure how either of the ideas I have will work as my aerial is in the rear window. i was originally stuck between the Kenwood DNX520VBT that they made for VAG and the RNS 510 with MDI but seem to be swaying towards the RNS.. at the same time as this I want a MFSW fitted but I'm still toying with the highline. Also gonna put some philips bluevision ultra's or extreme's in for now aswell and a new rear badge as white wormed.

Once I've done the bits I will use daily I'll look at getting the cosmetics done, first will be colour coding, not sure about an R32 rear but keep toying with the Idea as I would love to have a quad xzuast but whatever route I would have gloss black on the zuast trim and the front lip bit on the splitter.. Also contemplating some OEM LED rears and full chrome switches, toying with retrofitting xenon's, plus anything else I decide to go on this ever growing shopping list  :signLOL:

Well here's a few pic's to get the thread going (apologise in advance as only on iphone as a decent camera is also on the to buy list, lol)

As it was when I bought it

They are in Wolverhampton, as for price it would be best to phone them (01902 871422), as it all depends on what you want doing to them and current condition. Alot of people on here use them and I can say if mine or any other wheels need doing they will be going there

Post by: Nodz on October 16, 2011, 08:11:48 pm
Just finish phase one of the rear update, Valeo LED's and colour coded 3d badge:

and a couple from the Rollers at JKM
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi54.tinypic.com%2F23lmk4o.jpg&hash=335c6ed89469e34e01836fc92ab5d343d1225aec)

Just saving for phase 2 now, which will be R32 Rear, complete colour coding and Milltek non res, shallow box, slash cut quad (if they make such a thing, might have to be a custom). I think I'm gonna go for that next over the RNS510 and MDI as I can live with the poverty RCD300 and iPod dock.

Just a quick update, Just had the HU upgraded from the RCD 300 to an RNS 510 with 7P6 BT, MDI and cruise control fitted by Eddie NL with RNS & MDI coming from Nick over on R32OC.

Well impressed with it all and wished I had done it alot sooner than I did, but its done now and I'm over the moon with it. Glad I went for this over the Kenwood. Big thank you to Nick for the bits and Eddie for some bits and fitting them all for me in the snow  :happy2:   :drinking:

Out with the old:

Well they are coming to collect the car today, due to a technical cock up it was down to be estimated today but then they realised the car cannot be left anywhere secured they are collecting it and I'm getting either a Matiz or a Corsa  :sad1:

Hopefully it will be under their cut off value and it doesn't become a total loss. If it does there might be some Mint 18" Monza's with Michelin PS3's with 8mm front and 7mm rear up for a swap + cash for 17" Monza's soon or would need 17"'s on the quick as would rather these go on a car and looked after than some breaker flog them on ebay. but thats the worse case scenario.

This is what happened
http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=46073.msg532036#msg532036

Good news is that the estimate has come in under the total loss value as I spoke to the assessor today so just got to wait til the morning for the insurance to confirm this.

Got 2 ideas of what I'm gonna do. If I'm happy with it when it comes back then I'm going to send it to JKM and get the engine knocking that has developed sorted, cam follower and something else that was advised by VW that has started to perish and alignment done aswell if they do it if not to wheels in motion. And then a detail and wheel refurb at A1.

If I'm not happy part ex it for an octavia VRS,but greenlight dont insure them but I can get one out right or finance for a mk6 GTI but don't wanna do that as saving for a house. So I'm hoping I'm happy when I get her back.

Finally found out I'm getting the car back this week. Which is good as I seem to have spent more on the car since its been gone  :signLOL: Some big changes coming over June, just got to get the rest of the bits.

Reason for the hold up, so I've been told, is that I got new leather for the seat and not reparied. Just hope its all been done to a high standard.

Can't wait to get back in her a go for a good drive  :driver:

Nice, I need to get the at some point this year.

What springs did you put on your car?? Was it the 30mm H&R ones??

Got her back  :jumping:  :jumpmove: :jumping:  :jumpmove:

Went and collected her tonight and really impressed with the work carried. Not only have they fixed/replaced both windows the A pillar damage and new rubber seal along the top of the door, I also got new front leather seat covers and new steering wheel    :jumping:  :jumpmove: :jumping:

Only thought I was getting the leather rebuffed and was wondering why it was taking so long but found out it was due to the seat covers and wheel being on back order. Bumped into the estimator and he reckons I was lucky to get the new leather as it was only priced to be rebuffed and sealed and lucky they accepted the supplementary estimate. Highways was also very good to deal with and very helpful throughout, alot better than previous experiences with insurance companies when dealing with claims.

Really happy with to have her back at last, just got to get used to the power again after having a no litre matiz for the past month.

Just need to get the planned mods onto the car now as it is definitely staying.

Done a few more little mods today as the major ones have been put off until I get the rust done by VW (should be talking to them next week hopefully)

Climate rings (easiest mod ever  :signLOL: )

And change the wiper stalk to the later/mk6 style to match my cruise stalk as it was bugging me having 2 different colours:

Everything cleared and nothing broke which is a miracle for me, lol. The only thing is now I have some rubbing between the steering wheel and the plastic behind, not sure why but will have to sort it if it doesn't go away on its own

Looks almost shadow blue in the last couple of pics of the deflectors

I think Nodz wishes it was Shadow Blue. Theres proof on Facebook

Is there??   :scared: lol, I wouldn't change from laser blue for the world its a more exclusive colour than shadow blue  :booty: :signLOL:

Haha well I think it was you. Did you like a photo that detail my ride put on there yesterday of a shadow blue car being done? That was mine

Noooo *whistles innocently* :signLOL:

Small update, finally fitted the rear deflectors tonight, sorry about the quality, light was going and only had the iphone with me.

Unsure on the rear ones and I can see the stickers coming off them before the weekend. Just got to wait 12hours before I can open the window to test them

....I think that on your blue car the ClimAir stickers suit it very well indeed. I guess that one cool option might be to only remove the blue ClimAir stickers off the front windows. If you are removing, then try that first before deciding to remove them all.

I'm glad to see that rear ones bow the same as yours - It's just not what I expected. They work brilliantly - Natural air recirculation, who needs aircon! And no more sounding shadowed by a low flying helicopter when the sunroof is open.

I was thinking that with the stickers but I'm going to leave them for now. If they didn't have the web address and phone number on them they would be better.

I know the feeling with the rear ones but they have grown on me and work well.. As for aircon I still need it due to no sun roof lol

I just went on Autotrader to try a prove theres more shadow than laser about but its on par, which is annoying as when I wanted mine there was only about 6 for sale lol. And by doing that I've just found out that Chelmsford VW have a 10 plate .:R for £23k in blue just missing RNS and leather  :sad1: more annoyingly I'm going there tomorrow about the rust and they always seem to have a car I want when I go there lol

She's going to VW today to have the arches done under good will. Also having all the parts I've acquired sprayed and probably get them to fit them whilst its there and probably having the bonnet sprayed whilst its there. So I wont have her for a week but I don't mind to much as I'll be lazing round a swimming pool for a week from Monday.

She also passed her MOT with no problems on weds but I have got another screw in a tyre, this time the O/S rear.  :fighting:

So big updates due soon once I get a couple of little bits done when I get her back. Its only took me nearly 2 years to get round to doing it all  :signLOL:

It actually worked out quite well tbh, they couldn't do the good will until last week so I put it off for whilst I'm away, got a good price to get the other bits done and the bonnet so its a no brainer really. Be good to see mine and yours together at JKM in October :happy2:

Cheers Gareth :happy 2:

Lol I know, this place doesn't help at all but by finished I mean cosmetics still unsure about power, handling route as I'm happy with what it does as standard.

Plus lowering has gone out the window now as I had to do an airport run the other month at 3 in the morning as SWMBO's minibus didn't show up, the car done well to take 4 cases totalling to 85Kg and 4 women. But she was on her knees (the car that is :signLOL: ) so that's why that's gone out the window as I need practicality.

Saying that this place can easily change people's minds :signLOL:

Air it is then - sorted :signLOL:

For a cheap and easy fix, I'd go for some H&R springs (well, I already have) - reasonable drop, no loss in ride quality and looks a lot better.

You car is going to look special, and IMO it will look odd at a standard ride height. TBH, its probably not that often you're rolling with 85kg of luggage and 5 up in the car.....

You would be surprised how capable it is on H&R's. I got 5 adults in mine and drove up a road with those stupid triple speed bumps and only scraped once  :surprised:

I would love it even lower but practicallity takes too much of a hit  :sad1:

You really can't go wrong with H&Rs, great balance of practicallity, handling, looks & ride quality  :notworthy:

I don't think I've got the boot space for the compressor for air lol..

I keep looking at H&R's as both of yours do look good and the drop is spot on. I'm gonna see what it looks like once bits are on and go from there as practicality is something I need, theres been quite a few times recently when if it had been lowered I would've been stuck

It was the Four Seasons in Laindon (hungry horse), it happened between 12 and 1 on a Saturday afternoon. It is a nice pub with good food (not that I've been back since) but if you do go only the camera outside the front door works

Well she's back and I she looks good, how all GTI's should have left the factory. Really happy with the results, had both wings replaced and sills done under good will, bonnet, splitter, skirts and rear lower bumper sprayed and fitted. In hindsight I should have had the front bumper done as well but its not that bad. I've not had the lip done black but am debating it atm but I do really like it all blue.

Got a list of stuff I want doing now, mainly a detail and wheel refurb/new wheels.

Anyways to much talk and not enough pic's so heres a few for now, full transformation will be finished on the 1/9 as I haven't got any time off until then as working 7 day weeks atm.

You can buy them but you have to mod them as the fog/reverse lights are on the wrong side. They was an OEM option for the european market but we never got the option over here. I got mine on here 2nd hand for £180 and they come up now and again. You can get them from here:

The Quads are on!!  :pomppomp: :pomppomp:

After 2 years of wanting to do this i have finally got round to doing it. gave the car a quick was today and the exhausts. The zorst still needs a few sessions of wire wool and autosol to get it back to its former glory but its getting there. Now all the outside needs is a professional detail the wheels refurbing, unless I can find some 19" Monza's or BBS do the wheels I want with the right offset. Anyways enough talk here's a pic

The exhaust is no where near as loud as I thought it would be for a non res and I don't really think its much louder than stock. But I'm really happy to finally get it done

Big thanks to Alex at AKS for fitting the zorst as there was a bit of faffing about involved and for changing the DV, cam follower, fuel filter and sub frame spacer bolts. Now the list for here to be where I want it is:

Detail and wheel refurb,, Brake refurb as the paint is very faded and cracked and about to peel on the rear offside, Chrome tip switches and the bushes and engine mounts need doing as the have started splitting.

Not really, I do alot of motorway and dual carriageway miles so I need it really due to the amount of crap the rear catches in bad weather.

I know what you mean and its surprising how much the colour changes depending on the weather. Both the sig and the pic I just posted were taken on the same corner about the same time of day but the quads one was on an overcast day and sig was on a day with brilliant sunshine.

The longer you leave it, the harder it may be to source the quad as Milltek haven't had it on their site for some time now and milltek dealers are slowly taking it off their site aswell and I'm not sure if anyone else offer a quad

....The Quad has always been a rarity and not many batches produced due to limited demand. It's also tricky to source a quad exhaust trim.

Title: Re: Nodz's Laser Blue GTI (Updated 22/12/12)
Post by: Nodz on December 22, 2012, 08:03:59 pm
Bit of an updated, I've not done much over the past few months but this week its been with Alex at AKS having a few bits done.

It needed it yearly service and it was the full one so it had the oil and all filters changed, nology plugs fitted. It was due a brake fluid change so that was done and when I dropped off the car we decided to change the gearbox oil aswell as its never been done (another job VW don't think ever needs doing).

Whilst it was in last time having the exhaust changed on the ramp we noticed that the wishbone bushes had started to perish and split and it was the same with the lower engine mount and dogbone mount, so the wishbones got some superpro bushes and VT for the engine mounts with a full alignment after.

I'm very impressed with the feel of the car after all the work and it feels really good to drive. There is more vibration in the car after having the VT mounts fitted, which I did expect that as its a solid unlike the OEM option, but its only noticeable when pulling away at low revs and on idle but I only really noticed that when I was driving, when Alex picked me up and I was a passenger I couldn't really tell any difference. After having these fitted its got me thinking of other handling mods to do.

Now its all serviced and any maintenance work is up to date I can start planning my next lot of mods for next year, the main one being, although really a mod, is a professional detail and wheel refurb.

Superpro ALK - if that wasn't one of the wishbone bushes you replaced??

H&R springs will make a big difference to the handling - as well as looks (although I'd highly recommend doing your shocks at the same time)

Choices, choices

It wasn't the ALK version just the normal one, more than happy with them tho.

I do keep thinking of lowering it but its just not practical, I keep thinking of this pic when people say about lowering it  :signLOL:

Also any mods I plan for next year can't be too expensive as I've just been reminded by SWMBO that we're meant to be saving for/buying a house lol

Anyways wheres the pics of your new toy?

Haha honestly it doesn't scrape on H&Rs - mine still got over speed bumps with 5 adults in  :happy2:

It just ruins your shocks & bushes

I don't even think I posted any pics up of my old one  :ashamed:

I'll bring it down to JKM next time anyway and you can have a good luck round

^ I have to use ramps every time I get my car out of her batcave but it's a small price to pay for great handling. Most indoor car parks are a no-no too but it never stops me finding suitable parking somewhere.

Just a quick mini mod today, new key case and badge

Before:

After:

I've also got the Chrome tip switch set to fit at some point.
This will probably be the last treat for the car as any money is now going into the house fund as that is now more of a priority. So any future mods will be few and far between unfortunately  :sad1:

It's gotta to be a stretched photo, unless he's taken the guts outta into a slim case somehow...

Probably the auto resize on tinypic or the angle of the picture. It's only a plastic key cover over the original key

Well the end is nigh, after 8 years and nearly 100k miles its time to move on. I was only going to keep the car for 3 years or until it hit 70k (got it on 49k i think). Not really had to spend to much over the years but just got to a point where the things that need doing are mounting up and I just cannot justify spending out to have them fixed. The private plate came off last month and the replacement will be here next week, I doubt it'll be anywhere near as good but its 2 years of cheap motoring at a cheap rate so couldn't turn it down.

A proper advert will be up tomorrow in the For Sale section but only looking for £1500 as needs some work doing to it.
