Recon steering rack fitted today, on start up I have the orange steering wheel symbol in the dash and no power steering.
Any ideas ?
-
I had this with a reconditioned mk6 rack only my power steering lasted a day. Have you calibrated it?
-
Just sorted it, found a thing on line on how to calibrate it.
Start car
Leave steering wheel cantered for 10 secs
Full left lock 10secs
Full right lock 10secs
Back to centre and light went off
On the bad side I still have knocking steering 🤬
-
Again, same here. Right pain in the hole.
-
Have you still got the rack on? Where did you get it from?
-
I swapped back to my original mk5 rack. I got mine from bb reman on eBay.
-
Christ!!! A lot of labour to end up back where you started

Yep. When the mk6 rack was in the steering did feel really, until it failed.

I’m starting to think this noise is my H&R springs? 🤷🏻♂️
-
How can springs cause a noise?
The racks are prone to making some awful noises even with little to no discernible play. Other causes can include the common subframe creaking

How can springs cause a noise?
Binding, coils , that’s why some come with insulators.
-
I solved my issue by changing pads, even though the pads I took out were only a few months old.

Bump stops kick in way before springs go coil bound. It's one of the first things reputable brands like H&R check when making lowering springs for OEM dampers.

Hmmm, thinking about it it doesn’t make the noise when the car is stood , full lock to lock no noise. Only when the car starts creeping slowly and turning I get click/knocking noise, faulty cv joint then?
-
sounds like it could be the CV joint then yeah. My mate had a creaking on his steering once and it turned out to be the bolts clamping the rack to the sub frame wasn't tight enough! but that was doing it moving and stationary. if yours is only moving, then could well be the CV joint. find an empty car park and drive round in circles (full lock left and right) while listening for that click!
A mate also had a clicking sound once. And the drive shaft bolt (centre hub bolt) wasn't tight enough.
-
The sound doesn’t happen when driving in full circle ( driveshaft test)
Literally only when turning the steering wheel, once you stop the sound stops
-
have you checked the subframe and rack bolts? Maybe one/some are loose.
-
I’ve just put a new rack on mate, noise exactly same before rack change
-
Update, now it’s making the noise when not moving.
Lock to lock results in a light knocking which appears to be coming from the drivers
Front area.
